NYC after the Great War?

The Big Rotten Apple? The city would've been a blast mark in the ground. How do you think people survived in NYC after the great war? What do you think happened to them? Do you think there are any vaults in the outlying area? If I had to say one or two I'd say Vault 121 and Vault 119. Located in the Brox area and Staten Island.

That depends. Is it Bethesda fallout or is it Black Isle fallout? If it's bethesda, then it probably looks like the Divide with more old world landmarks. If not, then people would probably build around at some distance from the glass crater.

The Palisades might protect part of Northern NJ northeast of NYC and has varied levels of wealthy towns and standard suburban sprawl with light industry and a NIKE missile or two (provided in this scenario they did not fire). I'd imagine many private vaults for wealthy families and one Vault Tech maybe for people in this region. Not sure Hackensack would be a target of any importantance so perhaps some loose form of county wide government? I grew up around this area. I wonder of the Oil Refinery south of me would be a Poseidon Energy one in this fallout scenario. If so that would be interesting.

I just think there will be just craters from nuclear bombs and tons of concrete, not even ruins. Pretty much dead city. Or are you talking about the NY-state?

The Big Apple itself would most likely be a blackened crater with twisted girders for flavor. I imagine upstate New York would do much better, since it's not like there's a reason to nuke Buffalo, really. I would imagine that most of the civilization that develops in the wake of the war would be in and around the shores of Erie and Ontario (since, despite the protestations of Fallout 3, the ready availability of water is really important, and removing radioactive materials from water is not especially difficult.)

I used to think that a Fallout game in New York would be impossible since it would literally be a simmering bunch of craters with the twisted steel frames of some hardy buildings here and there, but seeing how Los Angeles didn't look too horrible in the first game, I'm not sure. I still say there wouldn't be much left.

I'm guessing that the five boroughs and everything that makes the city so recognizable would be lost to the bombing or time, but maybe Newark and other mainland cities that comprise the very borders of the NYC metropolitan area would have some buildings still holding up.

Upstate New York would likely be mostly left alone with a few neutron bombs on Buffalo, West Point Academy and the other smaller cities near Lake Erie. I mean, I haven't lived in the state since I'm from the west coast, but that's my best guess.

NYC would be completely gone. It's the financial center of America and a massive concentration of population. Also during the fallout timeline CT had a LOT of arms manufacturers and a nuke sub base so it too would have been hit hard as well pouring fallout all over what was left of the greater NYC area.
I have a Civil Defense map from 1950's showing probable impact sites in CT and 2 are in the southwest corner near NYC.

if from bethesda I'd expect something akin to D.C
and to be honest I'd be fine with that, There comes a point to me where I'll suspend my disbelief quite a bit, if it's like D.C
i wonder if civilizations would've formed in the skyscrapers
if the boomers could get planes working i wonder if somebody has formed a flying system maybe made out of junk and old fusion generators
Maybe I'm stretching it though

Meh, I'd be more interested about the people then the ruins.

Honestly, I would more like NYC to be a combination of D.C. and The Boneyard destruction wise. Have it blasted to hell obviously but not have it be a giant crater because what would be a point setting the story there if the environment consisted of nothing?

Well actually have the center area a mass of radioactive craters with only a few bunkers there could be done in an interesting manner.

I think the are where the missile striked in NYC would be over Central Park likely. With the other 5 boroughs being wrecked to hell. I can see some civilization trying to restart itself in the ruins of Staten Island or the Bronx considering they have the most direct land routes.

I'd suspend my disbelief if they just made Central Park into Central Crater and had the rest of it looking like Los Angeles or D.C., but knowing Bethesda they'd want to make Central Park as it presently exists a location with stuff going on like the Mall in Fo3.

I'd make it a giant crater though, possibly with a little town or city built in the middle by ghouls.

Bethesda's habit of wanting to keep landmarks intact might actually kinda make sense with the Statue of Liberty though? I feel like it's far enough away from the actual city to take that much damage, or at least I'd be able to suspend my disbelief enough to accept it if it were still standing. I definitely think there would be some kind of settlement inside it and on Liberty Island. It would probably be some kind of fort I think. I like the idea of it being the ironic capitol of some kind of fascist and xenophobic faction.

Ellis Island seems like it would be controlled by a group similar to the Followers of the Apocalypse as a kind of hospital/shelter for refugees, if not by the same people as Liberty Island since they're really fucking close.

I also think there would be rubble everywhere and Fo3's subway travel thing would have to be used to get around sections of Manhattan, it'd be annoying still but it would make a lot more sense there than it did in D.C.

The real problem with NYC is that there's not a lot of empty natural land to fill it with. There basically has to be stuff everywhere, and that would take a ton of fucking time to make and might just result in a map that feels really repetitive and bland. If they made part of it in New Jersey I could see it working I guess. Otherwise it just wouldn't really work as a first person open world game. They could just make Staten Island a DLC I guess.

New York would be my all time favorite location for a fallout game if it was done correctly. I was thinking you could have boats transporting you to different parts of the city because the bridges would be so fucked up. I imagine the boats taking you to ports in south Manhattan, Brooklyn and Staten Island. I'd love to explore the ruins in and around Wall Street, read about all of the horrible shenanigans they got up to before the bombs hit. They definitely couldn't do the entirety of NYC, so they'd have to section off parts of it, like the areas that have become massive craters and are just completely uninhabitable. Man, I'd love that, I really hope that bethesda doesn't just make a wimpy DLC that takes you there, I really want someone to make a full game out of it.

It could really work as an isometric game I think.
