Bipolar? Perhaps. I like the idea that life is full of surprises and that human beings may hide unusual strengths and weaknesses but also suffer from venial sins.
As for Luke and Samantha-
Samantha is expected to bring down a Grizzly bear with a dart gun. She gets one shot because those things are difficult to reload. Given that, she better hit it the first time.
Luke goes after big game- Elephants, tigers, lions, bears, that kind of thing. I never saw Luke as the kind of guy who is especially fond of duck hunting or shooting pheasant, so a 50.
Besides, Luke is more well rounded that Samantha. Generally speaking characters are not so well rounded with firearms. But there are exceptions to that rule.
Baldwin is a noticeable exception and one of my favorite characters. Baldwin grew up around the Klan so he really hates white supremists, plus he's got a violent streak. Hey, the guy is Ving Rhames!
What I don't get is why Zoe was so insistent on Jimmy getting the rifle rather than Mitchel? Truth is, neither one is really good with a rifle! Which given Jimmy is about to face off with the other zombie....
Real shame about Alex. Given a bit of training he could have improved scores for a lot of players. That said, it's not just marines who can teach firearms skills.
Hammond and Earl- Yes, both were planning to kill the other. The more interesting question involved Rita's role. Remember she was the wife of one and the sister of the other. What were their plans for her? Or what were her plans for them?
As for Horst, yes. I kind of decided to take him out of play early after Fireblade decided to play him up and I talked Fireblade out of it. There is more to Horst than you know. Suffice to say he's one evil SOB. Had he survived I think he might have been too difficult for the group to deal with but removing him would create other types of problems for all of you. So it was a decision of plotting.
However, given that Horst did not have to die. Had Sean or another character successfully persuaded Baldwin to calm down, or had they intercepted Baldwin before he bashed in Horst's brains, Horst would have survived. Likewise had anyone been successful at removing Horst as a problem maker early or quieting him, he might have survived. Horst, for all his evil, also brings with him a variety of skills but as for the game goes, he could have survived this far into the game.
Likewise, Erica Spears and her trip to Brownson might not turn out so well. Whether she gets there or not depends on her fuel... and her luck.
Overall, you should take into consideration what kinds of guns you have at your disposal. You are about to get more- thanks to Rita suddenly changing her mind after almost getting bitten by one of the gravecrawlers.
Of course getting the guns may not be quite so easy.
Most of the players have some pistol skills, others have rifle and or shotgun skills. Rifles give you an advantage of range, shotguns give you firepower at close range, and pistols are fairly generic last ditch weapons.
Consider this a gift to help you distribute weapons more effectively.
By now, most of the characters have figured out that head shots are best, but as Rita's case illustrates, you have to do "enough" head damage, and even that might not be enough (see Horst). Considering the amount of damage it requires, it might take more than one shot and don't forget, shooting precisely takes time. Time means that a grave crawler has a better chance to grab you.
In terms of battle strategy, consider that gravecrawlers have multiple types of attack- they can bite, but they can also grapple- and being very strong their grapple attack can be crippling.
