Olympics

If one synchronized diver hits the board on the way down, does the other one have to as well?

Actually, yes. Two girls both rotated too far on a dive and they lost less points then if only one had messed up.

Well, we (as in GB) finally got a Gold. Some women's sailing event. I would say "Yay!" or somesuch, but I don't care that much. :D

How much is sport sponsored (by the gov't or otherwise) in Aussieland?
It's pretty poor here, I'm amazed that we've managed to win anything.

Good luck for the Aussies.

Anyone hear about the rumors of the Chinese doing Genetic Doping. Kind of a Mess-with-DNA-for-Superior-Athletes thing?

Also, I can't believe our empty the stands are. Pity the Greeks who have to pay for this. Great TV but lousey stadium attendence so far.

Tell you what.... Canada SUCKS!!!!! the canadian olympic comitee, needs to get their heads out of each other's asses and look at the medal standing. "blablablabla we're sending quality athletes blablabla more crap this more crap that".

In the end, we sent the smallest team since 1972, i hope we don't win another medal and finish the games with only two medals in pretend sports ( synchro diving and trampoline), then perhaps a big enough scandal will cost them their jobs. They will then perhaps support amateur sport more. In 14 weight category( boxing) we sent 5 boxers...FIVE... two of which had to go to court to get their hard earned qualification, because the COC didn't recognize some Olympic qualification tournament as good enough for Canadian standards....pricks!!!....

It seem to me that we are so scared of offending some other country by getting more medals than they do, that perhaps in the next olympic we should send no-one...that way we are sure to NOT win anything.

The government spends about $2 billion annually on sport and recreation, mainly on venues and 'normal people'. The majority of the money for the elite athletes comes from corporate sponsorship. What really helps us is that we life a fairly healthy lifestyle (although it is getting worse and people are getting fatter) and Australians are sports mad. It is an important part of our culture to like many sports and not just football (soccer).

We ended up 4th on the medal tally, the best result ever, although the superpowers were still far ahead. We really do punch above our weight.

Despite the terrible judging/conditions/crowds/finances/facilities etc. it has been a very good Olympic Games. Sydney was still better though.

Go Australia!

Did Greece even win a medal? Dunno, don't care. Olympics is fucktarded. Overhyped POS. Ultimate fighting is the way to go.

Belgium won gold in women's tennis (Justine Henin is simply the best), bronze in cycling (Axel Merckx) and something else (or so I heard)...

That's all Belgium won? Sjeesj, you guys suck...

And yes, Greece won medals. I think they were 12th or 13th on the medal ranking thingie.

amen to that. If you saw the stands in the greek sports venues during the olympics you'd think it was Iraq vs. Equitorial Guinea. any sport. Australia, Syndey 2000, oh man, we didnt care what sport, we booked tickets to anything we could possible get our hands on... oh mate, im tellin ya, it would've been a pleasure competeting for australia. That was the best olypmics ever! it just shows you spending more money doesnt mean jack.

Aussie!Aussie! Aussie!

Oi! Oi! Oi!

Tell me about it. It's a crying shame. It was all over the news today: how we should restructure our sport federations and stuff. Jeez. Like we have any money to do that. Ha!

The third medal is a bronze one too, apparently. For judo. Yay!

I heard you Dutchies won 22 friggin' medals. Congratulations.

I'll say this though: we Belgians should be soooooooooooooo happy that we have someone like Justine Henin. Without her gold medal (due to her talent, ambition and character - something most Belgian sportsmen lack) this would have been a true disaster.

Olympics 2004 was GREAT!!

But there is one thing that really upset me: the "dream team" was very, very weak. I'm a fan of basketball, and American basketball in particular, and I hoped that they would keep their leadership, but alas...
Bronze medal doesn't count: it's just too weak for US team. Lost to Argentina! Lost to Puerto-Rico! Barely got out of their group! Unbelievable!
I say it was the worst dream-team ever.
Many top players (Shaq, Kidd etc) rejected the offer to defend their homeland's honor. That was so low.
Iverson was a hero, though! I really admire that guy! He was so willing to struggle to win the olympics. ANd he is very displeased with the guys that didn't go.
Anywayz, the team was awful. Just look at the 2000's stats: 10 wins, no defeats! Flawless victory! Same applies to all previous years, except for 1992..
Although, of course, American basketball is getting pretty weak and not only because of the olympics. European basketball is more progressive somehow, more innovative. NBA is a turtled a little, isolated and pretty much stagnating. But I think Athens 2004 gave them a very important lesson, and I hope that american basketball will reincarnate and renew.

Don't count on American basketball innovating just because it lost in the Olympics. When you're pulling down 25 million a year, who really cares about an Olympic medal? After all. its just another spot on your ego wall. Besides, as long as attendance stays up and Regular Joe on the street still watches, nothing will change.

About the only thing that will remedy the Olympic event is if all basketball players are required to be amateur; American collegiate 'ball is just as competitive as professional, and they would wipe the floor with any other country.

Croatia got only five medals. :(

But hey, that's one medal per each 900,000 Croats. As opposed to, for example, USA, who have one medal per each 8,000,000 people (if I'm not mistaken). If you look at the ratios, we're not bad at all.

Cuba almost got in boxing only (8 medals), more medals than Canada (12 medals) in total

yes i'm still majorly pissed off at the Canadian Olympic comitee
