We haven't reported in indie Retro-Sci Fi title Omega Syndrome in a while, but now that it hit 3.29 we have a perfect opportunity. Because in addition to the optional "hard RPG" rule which means your saves get deleted if your character dies, it now has an optional "No Hit Point Gain On Level Up Rule," which does exactly what it says it does. Download the demo and give the game, which plays almost exactly like Fallout did mechanic-wise, a spin.

It plays a lot like FO1/FO2....reminds me a bit of Wasteland....not so post-apocalyptic

Turn-Based makes the game feel soooooo Good to Play!!!

I think davarios was interested in people making mods for his game, maybe we could recreate fallout in this game engine, I think its a lot easier to use.

*EDIT*

From memory this game uses a technic similar to Baldurs Gate for its maps, it basicaly has one big bmp image and then draws blockers in place over it. In theory we could take screen shot of FO and then stitch the image together into one large image to use as the map. Not a bad idea if I say so myself

I'm amused that the name of the main character is "Max Power." A nod to The Simpsons?

From what I can tell, it does seem very similar to Fallout in game play and setting. Which is more than enough to make me willing to give the demo a spin.

I wish there were more games with a sci-fi setting that used SPECIAL, or something similar.

Too bad the Fallout wasn't developed like this. It would be cool to play a 3.29 version of Fallout 1 with new quests and features instead of Fallout 2 and Fallout 3 :) .

Makes me wonder what Van Buren would have been like.

Meth in the form of a cRPG. Relationships across the globe would have been destroyed as a result of a never dying need to play the true Fallout3.

Or it would have just been a damn good and intelligent game.

*sigh*

The latest update to Omega Syndrome also starts your character off at a higher level to reflect your background. In other words you don't start off as a pathetic wimp.

Yup. Its the name Homer took from his hair dryer. At the time I was using it to poke fun at Max Payne.

Right now, there aren't any new turn-based games to be played except for OS. New graphics, and polish make OS really fun to play

Yes, better animations and a little bit nicer gui here and there and this could become really really cool. :)

Are you interested in specific feedback on this? I found the interface too slow, cumbersome and glitchy for actually getting into the game. A lot of things didn't really seem very well considered.

Looks interesting, if a little rough around the edges. But the style is nice.
If there's one thing I hate however it's being pigeon-holed into a specific character in a cRPG, in this case Ugly-Crewcut-Guy. So it's not for me.

Hey, the demo's free - and it's the only thing similar to Fallout that's out at this point, so what reasons do I have not to give it a spin? :D

3.29 makes Hit Point Limited to original character creation. Supposed to be implemented in FO1, though later removed.

..
Where'd you get that information? Because that seems pretty contrary to GURPS.

IIRC one of the developers mentioned Tim Cain wanting no HP on level up, and that it didn't made into game because critical hits would be too deadly.

I saw you mention this on the AGD forums. But I have no memory of this, so as long as you can't figure out where it's from, I'll say nah. I'd ask Tim himself, but he'd probably chase me off his front porch with a broom. Again.

It sounds like a good idea, and it'd certainly be applicable to a flexible character system like GURPS.

Other than that, I agree with Per. Omega Syndrome has a pretty clunky and slow UI. And too much combat, really. Though that makes sense within the storyline, it's just not fun.

How so? Which parts would you change to make it better? I'm always on the look out for good suggestions.
