In September, Polish developer and publisher CD Projekt will be starting up a new service for purchasing games online, Good Old Games. The idea is to allow people to download vintage PC games without copy protection in a price range of $6-10. How is this of interest to us? Well, to begin with, as Interplay's back catalogue is included in the first batch of games to be made available, Fallout 1, 2 and Tactics feature prominently on the teaser page. Secondly, the games have purportedly been rigged to work flawlessly on Windows XP and Vista, a feat which according to Shacknews has been done with access to the games' source code. No reason in particular for modders to cheer over that, perhaps, but at least it seems the Fallout code is no longer lost in a cardboard box stamped with "Interplay" somewhere. And finally, if the list of games they aim to get on the site is any indication (e.g. Sacrifice, Jagged Alliance 2 and the old Lucasarts adventure games), the people at CD Projekt simply have good taste.

Update: no source code involved.

Thanks Atombunker.

Odd that the Fo2 screenshots on the interview page seem to have been taken by someone playing around in the mapper.

To eliminate compatibility issues, the team has source code access to most games and will be creating custom installers for each title.

Something tells me that they will simply eliminate the installation problems that arise with Fallout games, while the game itself will have all the XP bugs intact (i.e., disappearing screen).

Eh, pretty much every game-breaking or annoying bug has been fixed by the community (besides the "too-many-items-you-better-have-saved-in-a-new-slot" bug).

And Tom said they might include fan patches and mods in the package as well. Maybe they'd include killap's?

Yeah, but those community patches won't be integrated into these releases, so what's the point of re-buying the same exact game you already have ?

Holy shit, this is awesome! I didn't think I could like these guys anymore than I already did. Been waiting for a service like this for a loooong time.
I hope more publishers sign up. It would be great to have the LucasArts classics, The Neverhood, Blood Omen: Legacy of Kain, PS:T, Arcanum, list goes on.

Also,
what are these guys gonna come up with next?!
"Hey dudes, we got bored fixing up The Witcher for the Xbox, so we finished Van Buren for you, here you go"

Gotta say, CD Projekt just seems to be getting better and better. Admittedly I only know them from The Witcher, but with their support of that and now making a service as cool as this I'm a hell of a lot more inclined to throw money at them.

Though sort of unfortunately for them, I'm a horrible packrat when it comes to games, so I've still got most of the good old games I'd want to play. Still, if they can make a pain-free version of Ultima Underworld for $6-10 it might be tempting just to skip the heartache of getting it to run well in dosbox.

Edit: Gasp, missed this before.
Buying the game is just the beginning. With a purchase of any game at GOG.com you'll also get some great additional materials for free, including game guides, walkthroughs, wallpapers and more. No joke.
That's a pretty cool added bonus, depending on how many games they have supporting that of course. Though I was also thinking they might be scans of old official game guides instead of something pulled off of Gamefaqs. If it's just a Gamefaqs type thing it would be less interesting, but still. Hot damn. I hope they manage to scrape up a lot more old games, though there are probably some things they won't be able to get like System Shock 1/2, which I think EA currently own.

I'd totaly buy original version of Torment. The game was dubbed in Poland so I couldn't enjoy Tony Jay's voice.

Two words: simply awesome.

I'm amazed it took this long for someone to come up with this idea. Of course, the idea has probably been there for a long time, but getting access to the source codes of these games probably took an extraordinary amount of digging, pleading, and finagling.

Holy fuck!

This is great, now i can finally get at least some of the classics i missed out on. I hope they'll deal with games older than those on the teaser screen, too.

XP compatible Syndicate? Magic Carpet? System Shock 1? Toonstruck? :Q_____

Be quiet, you.

Why wouldn't the respective owners of those old, old games not try to cash in on this? I don't think they'll get a better occasion to get monies from them, anyway.
