Past Life Experiences

Ok, I know this idea is goofy for most people, but there has been this idea that after death a person is reincarnated to fulfill something or complete some aspect of their lives that was left unfilled.

Thus people have this notion that, in a past life, they either knew someone or had some experience.

Do you think this is goofy?

I know some psychologists have done deep hypnosis on people who believe this, and sometimes it reveals certain memories. While the psychologists are dubious of the veracity of these memories they do believe in its therapeutic value.

Also if you had a past life, what do you think it was, or what do you wish it was?

As for me whenever I hear this and that the person says something like, "I was once a feudal lord" or " I was a countess" I usually respond with- I was a peasant girl in feudal Japan who got her head lopped off by some prick of a Samurai.

Im not sure but couldn't you have memories passed down from one generation from the next by genetics? Genetic memories? that might explain "past life" memories.

Yeah like that guy in Hitchhikers guide to the galaxy. Funny if this was true then it feels like my whole familiy upp to here would have been peasants.

I have absolutely no memories what so ever, but if I have had a past life I hope I was a viking lord, like Erling Sjalgsson, Tore Hund, but preferably before christianity came to Norway...urgh, I dunno, can't see how it could matter really...

How many people discover under hypnosis that they possess the reincarnated soul of Cleopatra? Or some other famous historical figure, or at least someone in a privileged condition.

How many people have the reincarnated soul of a dirt-poor farmer who didn't reach thirty? Who didn't know anything or experience anything, simply carved out a bare living for themselves?

Pretty much what you said Welsh. A Japanese girl though? Interesting.

You got your head lopped off by the prick of a samurai? Damn, and I thought Asians had small penises.

Anyways, I experience deja vu on occasion, and people tell me I have an old soul, but I've never remembered anything from a past life. Perhaps my shakra needs an adjustment?

By the sword of a some prick who happened to be Samurai.

Or, for example, you never hear someone saying that in their past life they got to be cabin boy on a pirate ship where the rum flowed well, the women were few and the men were lustful.

Deja vu has been scientifically explained and proven to have nothing to do with past lives.

That said, in my previous life I was a hamster.

hmm... i've heard most of the people, who believe in reincarnation think a soul follows the path of evolution. so it's quite possible.

Exactly as you said Welsh, Kotario, and Murdoch. If everyones reincarnated then why doesnt anyone have memories of having a shitty existence which surely more people have had than wonderous lives?

I have experienced deja 'vu quite often and under seemingly irrelevant circumstances. My guess is that a memory stored in the mind was somehow corrupted and instead of remembering a specific instance of it in the past you "feel" it happened, but arent sure.

Also my current college textbook for psychology says hypnosis doesnt work. Though Id like to imagine it works since it sure seems foolproof to remember everything without lying.

I was Elvis. So once and for all people, I'm not alive and well and living in Miami.

Does dreaming an event before it happened count as a form of deja vu?
these two things are connected with themselves.

some think that when you experience deja vu, you just recall the last prophetic dream.

Surely there has to be some unit that makes up a distinctly unique being beyond or within time and space to enable any sort of ‘afterlife’ to occur. I don't believe in the existence of the supernatural soul, so there cannot be memories of past lives. However I believe that my personality and beliefs have been strongly influenced by my genes in specific ways, as I have noticed that I share similar behaviours and approaches to those of relatives that I have never met. But then again, my living relatives might be exaggerating similarities and I might just be imposing patterns on chaos and coincidence. The question is once again about how strong the relationship is between genes, environment and personality.

What is a soul anyway? If I did have past lives, then it would have no effect on anything I do, as I prefer to do things because they are reasonable rather than because I can remember some caveman falling off a mountain in his pointless quest to be the first successful mountaineer. There would be no benefit to a person knowing that their ‘soul’ was once in the body of another very different person. If ‘I’ was supposed to do something the first time and didn’t, then why would there be a second chance? A soul can’t have obsessive-compulsive disorder or be disappointed can it? If it is for the good of the universe then some other person can surely continue the work.

What I have found interesting is that many of my Christian friends have different views of the afterlife and what Heaven is actually like. To me, they nearly all sound like they involve the destruction of one’s personality and intellect, leaving happy vegetables in stasis close to God.

What do you Religious people believe Heaven is like? What is your view of the soul?

I doubt the existence of heaven and the soul. The kind of immortality that does exist would be the fact that my traits can be carried on by children in the future.

I think that would be called psychic power: Precognition. How close are your dreams to reality? Please don't say that you remember dreaming it after something has happened because that doesn't count.

If I remember correctly (?) from my biology lecture, common deja vu involves the two sides of the brain being out of sync, with one side processing information faster than the other or something like that.

Some forms of hypnosis definitely do work. I have seen some pretty amazing tricks done by neuroscientists in altering perception and mood but different people were susceptible to varying degrees, some not at all and it always required a willingness to accept the stimulus. My mother’s co-worker is also a trained hypnotherapist who has been very successful in treating some problems. It seems to be largely about concentration and less about suggestion.

Well, I was a dog, :|
and then I were a worm, :|
And after that I was something suspicious in the fifth stomach of a brahmin, :|
And of course there is the memory, of being the betrayer Jedi, the only free Jedi on the galaxy, holding the soul stone of all the other Jedies, whith the ability to see the future in it, but of course I was too tired to fight, as I was stabed in the back, but damn it felt good. And as I fell of course the crystal was broken... :|

I do not doubt that I have already led a life before this one, and what's more: I have no doubt whatsoever that I was living exactly the same life I am living right now, in the same age, with the same people around me, saying the same stupid things and doing exactly the same stuff that I'm doing now.
I'm quite certain that this life is not the first one that I've lived, and I'm practically certain that it isn't the second or third time either. It's probably like the twintieth or eightieth time. Could be the 586th time too, though, I can only guess.
The funniest thing is that it's still not as boring as it should be, because I have no recollection whatsoever of my previous lives in this shithole. Which leaves me amazed and surprised at every crossroad in life, bedazzled by my own wits and the craziness of humanity. Which is for the best, I guess, because if I would fully realize the consequences of the perpetual return of reality and me being a tiny tiny part of it, I would probably kill myself immediately and do so endlessly.
Big bang. You and me. Big crunch. Big bang. You and me. Big crunch.
And so on.
Believe me: I can not put this into decent words.
It does not compute (seriously, seriously, seriously).
I feel alright.
A little seasick, maybe, but that's just fine (just fine, just fine, just fine).
You are ever so gorgeous (and pretty and handsome and horny, oh yeah, I betcha you're horny, aren't you, little duder?).
I wish I could hold you in my arms and kiss you on the lips (or any other place, I don't mind, I'm in need of affection, affection, affection).
Watch it, mister.
No, seriously, seriously, seriously.
Are you feeling lucky, asswipe?
Don't forget me.
Je t'aime (me neither).
Of course.

I agree with alec... kinda... I'm pretty sure I've lived this same life before. Every person I've met and who would later prove to be important in my life was strangely familiar, like I already know them. Also sometimes when I have a deja vu I can also remember what happens next, and often it happens...

No, you couldn't.
Unless you want to suggest a mechanism that changes the dna of your gametes every instant of your life (and remember, the dna of eggs is made before the woman is even born),

Or you think simply think so. Memories can be tweaked after the fact, our perceptions can be highly flawed. What an imperfect existence indeed.

Bah, the big crunch? Try the heat death of the universe.

My experiences with déjà vu have all been during periods where I was sleep deprived. I hold the view that it is an internal error, rather than anything more profound.

Either that or we are all in The Matrix and they are changing something.
