Peter Molyneux hates demos

I think his "alternative" is also called a demo, and it's been done before.

I actually think his "idea" isnt that bad. Well it isnt HIS idea but still.
Its been done before, just look at Gothic II demo for example, and its pretty good way to give people proper taste of the game. So its not really a new way of doing things, its just a better form of a DEMO, and it has nothing to do with Peter Moneyax.
I remember PSX demos being like this actually.

But obviously developers and publishers will never implement this in larger scale. Why ?
Because there is the very clear risk of people finding out how crappy and mediocre your game is. So they cant sell the game based on the hype/false advertising/lying.

I don't know what he's talking about. "Ruin the experience"? Huh, I don't understand his words.

Of course he hates demo versions. A demo is a natural enemy of hype, Pete's only weapon.

I couldn't have said it better myself.

I wish Fable had had a demo... would have saved me some time and $.

if you are expecting something along the lines of Ultima 7.2, planescape, or what-have-you then fable sucks ass.

but if you are expecting something to kick oblivion/fallout3's ass, then fable is a good game.

havent tried 2, but 1 sure as hell beat oblivious and FINO 3

Aye, Fable was a fun adventure game. Really overhyped but still good.

So, what he is saying is make demos longer? I guess it's good unless the game sucks, in which case it will prevent people from buying them.

speaking of which, is Fable 2 worth a try?
I did play Fable 1 and i really didn't enjoy playing it. It was monotonous and the quests and the story were very very VERY boring! It was all about escorting person x from point a to point b and ...

so is it the same with fable 2? how are the story and the quests? I would love to hear some opinions...is it worth a try?

and how are the expansions? because there is a regular version which is quite cheap and there is a game of the year edition with the expansions which costs more.

meh, if it comes out for PC ill get 2, otherwise i dont own a console so cant get it.

Right. So the man who went from being a somewhat-known name on a couple of close-to-death platforms back in the early 90's to a nigh-on God of programming in the mid-90's, due to the awesome demos of games such as Syndicate, Magic Carpet, Theme Park and Dungeon Keeper on the PC, is now trying to tell us that demos are evil and should now be done away with?

Mr Molyneux, you wouldn't have a career without demos. You would be nothing, you would have died with the Amiga and at best become the main article in a retro gaming magazine. Pull your head out of your ass and be grateful for demos. We gamers sure are.

Except that first 40 minutes of the game free would be a demo, which is why what he talks about doesn't make sense.

Still, I prefer separate demos, like Fallout demo, Fallout Tactics demo, JA2 demo, Syndicate Wars demo, etc. to demos consisting of the beginning of a game.

Yes, but one would be able to figure it out by playing first 40 minutes of them too, so I don't think it has anything to do with the topic.

wha... fable 1/2 took you longer than 40 mins to beat?

what did you do, go afk for 30 mins and then start playing ???

:D

Over the years I’ve done demos and they’ve either completely ruined the game, given too much to the player, or they’ve confused people, so I said that we should give away the very first 45 minutes of the game, completely free.

Isn't that basically just shareware? How is this a new idea?
