Philosophical Questions

PHILOSOPHICAL QUESTIONS:

I. Can anarchy exist without chaos?

II. Have humans developed technology before developing the ability to use it wisely?

III. "The one thing that I know is that I know nothing." (True? False? Somewhere in between?)

IV. Murderer or Murdered?

V. Is it better to survive today or make tomorrow better for your children?

These are by no means easy questions, but please share your thoughts.

I. Of course not.

II. Only if people were using nutcrackers in a vain attempt to pleasure themselves.

III. The one thing that I know right now is that I could go for a Belgian Waffle.

IV. METAL GENOCIDER

V. Man, my non-existent children are jerks.

Yes.

Absolutely.

III. "The one thing that I know is that I know nothing." (True? False? Somewhere in between?)

True.

Lepidus said:
IV. Murderer or Murdered?

Good? Bad? I'm the guy with the gun.

Lepidus said:

Parents would say yes by default, non-parents couldn't answer this (imo) with no real substance to the argument.

I'd say anarchy can exist without chaos but only in very small groups. Everything that doesn't requier a hierarchy. Ofc. all people inside the group must have the same ideology about anarchism.

Yes.

II. Have humans developed technology before developing the ability to use it wisely?

Indeed.

Lepidus said:
III. "The one thing that I know is that I know nothing." (True? False? Somewhere in between?)

Probably true.

Lepidus said:
IV. Murderer or Murdered?

If it has to come to that, murderer.

Lepidus said:
V. Is it better to survive today or make tomorrow better for your children?

If my parents, my parents parents, and them before that thought 'Make tomorrow better for your children', our world would be much better. Which is why I would say 'Make it better for your children'.

I. What context? The one involving lack of social structure can. The one involving the state of being can aswell, because it can be subjective.

II. Humans usually develop technology to solve a need or a problem, the negative effects of technology are usually seen in retrospect.

III. Depends on context. We all know something, but if the universe is infinite, we know almost nothing. Also that saying is more of a mental mantra for being open minded and learning how to learn.

IV. Both

V. You cannot make tommorow better if you cannot survive today.

*Edit* What are you trying to do? Be the group forum socrates with this thread and that AV? We already have a few that will eat your face.

First of all, I will not have this thread degenerate into yes/no spamming. Please add rationale to your choices.

I. Can anarchy exist without chaos?

On a very small scale, yes. However, the larger the group gets, the harder it will be to maintain anarchy (note, anarchy meaning "without leaders") as charismatic people WILL emerge and almost inevitably they will gain a following and topple anarchy.

Some years ago, good ol' Woozie pointed out the short lived anarchist state that emerged in Spain (IIRC) that was evidence that such an entity could sustain itself. I don't really consider it evidence of any kind, as it got owned by foreign powers shortly, showing just how shortlived such a country can be.

That and the fact that pretty much no other anarchist stae has emerged since then.

II. Have humans developed technology before developing the ability to use it wisely?

Absolutely. The damage done to Nature is the greatest piece of evidence to support this statement.

III. "The one thing that I know is that I know nothing." (True? False? Somewhere in between?)

It's a statement that defines my life, as no matter how much I learn, there's always more to absorb... and I'm always lacking knowledge, for some reason.

IV. Murderer or Murdered?

Boatmurdered.

V. Is it better to survive today or make tomorrow better for your children?

Tough question. The best way is to strike in the middle, by sustaining yourself while maintaining a healthy reserve for future generations.

I. Can anarchy exist without chaos?

Only in the animal world. People wouldn't like that kind of 'order'...
II. Have humans developed technology before developing the ability to use it wisely?

The humans that developed the technology have the ability to use it wisely. The consumers, that sit on their asses all day long and buy the technology from said developers... no. On average i guess the ability to use technology is on par with its development.
III. "The one thing that I know is that I know nothing." (True? False? Somewhere in between?)
This statement is a paradox. If i know that i don't know anything i cannot know that i don't know anything because i obviously know something: that i don't know a thing. I'm thinking there's lots of things i don't know, but i don't think there's things i cannot know.

IV. Murderer or Murdered?

That is an easy one. Everybody would prefer murderer.

V. Is it better to survive today or make tomorrow better for your children?
It depends. If you choose to survive today, and not think of the future, your children will be faced with the same question. If you don't try to survive today there may be no children tomorrow. I guess it's best to make a combination of both. Surviving seems like a good bet though...

I think you're confusing sophistry and philosophy, there.

I pictured Rumsfeld posting the above.

IV. Murderer or Murdered?

It depends on who I'm murdering.

I. Can anarchy exist without chaos?

When taking the original Greek word literally ("without a ruler"), the word "anarchy" does not necessarily imply chaos or anomie. Thus, theoritically of course, anarchy can exist as an egalitarian, non-violent community.

II. Have humans developed technology before developing the ability to use it wisely?

Presuming that the Mayans were wrong and we all don't die anyway by the year 2012, we'll probably realise that if/when the Earth becomes inhospitable due to the effect of human technology.

III. "The one thing that I know is that I know nothing." (True? False? Somewhere in between?)

"'Εν οίδα ότι ουδέν οίδα". The sincere acceptance of one's ignorance paves the way for reaching true knowledge. Definitely true, though one must probably experience it in order to realise that it's true.

IV. Murderer or Murdered?

Probably murdered. More chances of turning into a martyr and inspiring the formation my own personal cult that might turn into the one true worldwide religion that way.

V. Is it better to survive today or make tomorrow better for your children?

Again, assuming the Mayans were wrong...the ideal situation requires a little bit of both, I guess. Try to get by in your life as best as possible while at the same time making yourself, those around you and, in consequence, the world, a better place for future generations. If I only have to pick one, however, it would be the latter. More altruistic. And "altruistic" looks good on one's Facebook profile.

Why do kamikaze pilots wear a helmet?

Because they're under fire until they get to the target. Wouldn't want a kamikaze pilot to bang his head on the cockpit wall while taking off and then plunging into the nearest friendly barracks...

this reminds me of some introductory courses for students of other fields. i visited some of those when i studied medicine. i find your hubris to "answer" those riddles (if you will) with short sentences... amusing. philosophy for οἱ πολλοί.

alsoplustoo, "Οἶδα οὐκ εἰδώς." is for some reasons much more common than the original "Ἓν οἶδα, ὅτι οὐδὲν οἶδα."

on a kinda related note, the last time i actually had to read some greek shit was when i studied.

Wiki

Christiania, also known as Freetown Christiania (Danish: Fristaden Christiania) is a partially self-governing neighbourhood of about 850 residents, covering 34 hectares (85 acres) in the borough of Christianshavn in the Danish capital Copenhagen. Christiania has established semi-legal status as an independent community, but has been a source of controversy since its creation in a squatted military area in 1971. Its open cannabis trade was tolerated by authorities until 2004. Since then, measures for normalising the legal status of the community have led to conflicts, and negotiations are ongoing.
