Pistol use

Felspawn

It Wandered In From the Wastes
I noticed that in pretty much ever game I play, regardless of if I use guns or EW I always gravitate towards rifles, if I'm using a pistol it's usually the start of the games and I don't have anything better ( example that gun early game). Aside from aesthetics and Rp value (big iron on his hip) I dont see a reason to carry one. Is there any gameplay benefit to a pistol I'm missing

I actualy prefer pistols whenever I focus on guns, I only use rifles when killing big things like Deathclaws or Cazadores, or when focusing on Energy Weapons.

There are some very good pistols in the game...That Gun, 12.7mm pistol, Plasma Defender, Hunting Revolver, etc. It really just depends on the way your character is made, but the most obvious benefit is that they are lighter, require less Action Points to use, and still pack a decent punch.

nah, I prefer light pistols without much recoil, I mostly use the 12.7 mm pistol, or the .45 Auto pistol after Honest Hearts.

Pistols are nice in close quarters (mostly the low AP cost and the usualy good-sized magazine, and accuracy ar that range is unneccesary), but NV doesn't have that many dungeons, much of the fighting is done outside, where the rifle's range is a clear advantage (save for a modded Hunting Revolver, not as cool as the Sequoia but at least you don't have to kill poor Hanlon or another Ranger to get it). But I can certainly see the appeal of That Gun or the Plasma Defender, even if I am also a rifle amateur (Hunting Rifle, This Machine and Holorifle <3).

You can just reverse pickpocket them.

On topic, guns like Ranger Sequoia or A Light Shining in the Darkness (what an uber-retarded name) are more usable and effective then most of the rifles.

You see what is wrong in here? :>

Wel I don't know squat about real life weapons, so maybe is it that a real 12.7 mm (if it exists) would have mad recoil? I don't know XD

The 14mm pistol / 12.7mm pistol is like a big hand cannon. :p

I personally like it quite a lot. It's the only pistol I always have with me. BAAAM, BAAAM. Though, I would totally use the Ranger Sequoia all the time, but it's very hard to get one and no, I don't want to reverse-pick pocket, that's a bullshit trick.

Will do it the same way I got normal ranger clothes... Using my brush gun, going into stealh mode and killing some ranger with one headshot from as big distance as possible, then fast traveling away, waiting 24 hours, then coming back. :p

It's the same grade of stupidity but much easier to accomplish.... A part of me hopes that it some day will be possible to get such a pistol in the game while doing some very hard task. Hey, Lonesome Road and all the named dead NCR plattoons might be a good spot for it...

I just saw some videos, that ammunition is used in mounted machien guns too, heh, yeah kind of unrealsitic for it to be a almost recoil-less psitol in New Vegas, but well, it has been replaced by a fully moded .45 in my game.

I like using the Glock Plasma Pistol (in lue of the Gauss Pistol); bit of recoil IIRC but a very high rate of fire and high damage.

No pistol can top A Light Shining In The Darkness.

I would use that if it wasn't so damn stubby.
I like using pistols more than rifles. They take up less of the screen and you can run at full speed with them. Fairly fast reload as well unless you're using a 357.
I mainly used pistols in Fallout 1 and 2 as well, just something about the 14mm and .223 that gives of awesome.

There are also 12,7mm handgun rounds.
But yeah, those rounds still kick major ass and might break your wrists :D

The Sequoia's 45-70 is also a pretty big round, far bigger than what is practical for a pistol (well, in our world. I guess in a place with Deathclaw, Cazadores, Power Armor, Muties and super-humans like Lanius it suddendly gets much more important). The 12.7 SMG however, I didn't think that was in any possible with such a massive round, 12.7 is pretty much a .50 cal, no?

Also, in my list I completely forgot the .45 pistol (the modded normal one, with the silencer et all, Graham's pistol is too short and unmanly :P), it looks really nice and packs quite a punch.

My favorite char so far uses pistols for most of the game and everything but long range sniping.

With the right combination of perks (cowboy, run & gun, light touch and travel light) you can be really fast and deadly by combining the better revolvers and some light armor.
It makes the realtime guns combat a LOT more fun.

I have him wearing Graham's armor and a combat helmet mk2 (early game I wore bounty hunter duster or leather armor and used lucky) and using mostly ranger sequioa and la long carbine with their best reloads. Combined with other standard perks for guns chars (better crits etc) it's a pretty much unstoppable combination that lets you do big damage, yet still run across the wastes at high speed and literally dodge attacks.

I may never go back to using the medium or heavy armors now that I am spoiled by how quickly my char can cover ground while not really giving up much in terms of defensive ability. When it comes down to it, manueverability is king and light weapons and armor are the key to it in this game.

Yes, it's a .50 caliber. Probably similar to .50AE or .500S&W or something huge like that.
I guess they called it 12.7mm so noone confuses its ammo with the .50BMG from the Anti-Materiel rifle.
My favourite pistols are the .45 pistol and That Gun.

Not really, it's used extensively for hunting weaponry, like revolvers and 1 shooters.
