Planet Fallout interviews Jeff Gardiner

I mean everything is already done for them and they just need to build stories and art and stuff within a finished game, something lots of mod makers already do.

It's not quite as easy as you make it sound but yeah, the existence of a fully programmed and, er, "finished" engine with lots of usable art assets means the one-year development window is pretty viable. We'll see how Obsidian handles it, tho'

Sounds like a pretty similar time window and similar conditions (a new game using the same engine and assets as a previous game by another developer). On the other hand, they probably had less people, smaller budget and less experience in operating as an independent dev studio back then.

With Obsidian I'm expecting a better product, I mean everything is already done for them and they just need to build stories and art and stuff within a finished game, something lots of mod makers already do.

Well, sure, but if it's on the same engine as FO3, then it will be just as fucked up. I mean, if they manage to fix some of it, it'll be a miracle, but it isn't really their job, so...

And if we're more realistic about it, they'll add some bugs of their own to the mix (remember NWN2 on release), so we'll get a glitcy game on a buggy engine. Well, maybe if Obsidian handles the patches, we could get a reasonably finished product a few months after release.
