Although, isn't a laser BOLT much less scientifically possible than a laser beam?
 
The bolt in the originals was a way to work around limitations of the engine (which can display projectiles, but can't render beams).

That, and it feels more like the cheesy 50s sci-fi on which the games were (or at least intended to be) based. It's a sign of a great game when they turn technical limitations into part of the game's aesthetic.
 
Each one serves a purpose, plasma is for bigger enemies with armor and more effective at close range. Lasers are for distance killing light enemies, like powder gangers and prospecters. Holorifles are good at any range, gauss works like that too

It looks exactly like the grenade launcher and the projectile looks goofy. Would've been better with a more unique model/texture and just one square glowy hologram thingy. Just my opinion tho.

That doesn't change the fact that it is one of the best weapons in the game.
 
In my latest playthrough, I'm using energy weapons as my main form of weaponry. So far, I prefer using plasma. The damage it does compared to laser makes a huge difference in battle.

Of course maybe I just haven't found the right laser weapon yet...
 
Plasma all the way, high damage rocks and slowness doesnt matter when you're a good shot, laser was always to weak for my tastes.
 
Plasma. Mainly because I'm a (ranged) tank/bruiser. I sometimes make other builds but I usually stick to that.
 
Plasma is better.

Anyone who had an extremely hard time hitting something with a Plasma weapon is simply a shitty aim. Its not like its so slow that they just look at it, look back at you, look at it again, and then simply step out of the way. Its fast enough to be accurate with.

Plus, whats better, burning people into ashes, or melting people into a type of plasma goo.
