The phrasing is unfortunate.

Play.tm might very well be the first to state/relay any doubts about the story.
I don't see any doubt expressed in that question, but then again, I didn't read anything else so...

Reading feedback on our last Fallout 3 preview, fans seem concerned that the story will take a hit with this new RPG. What would you say to convince them that this isn't the case?

What kind of cocksucking question is that?! Holy... I don't need to read the rest...
What's wrong with the question, exactly?
The "What would you say to convince them that this isn't the case?" part.

Luke, the author of that piece, is a nice guy. Worked side by side with NMA in the Van Buren and FOBOS days, helped in showing the lies that were being said by Interplay.

So ehm, yeah, how's that ESP thing working out for you?

Most people spend a lot of time in RPGs exploring around and killing things.

Here we go again.
I'll say.

Is the timing right for a new Fallout game? Do you worry that the gaming world has moved on?

I think the gaming world is into big, sandbox games where you can go where you want and do what you want.
How many times will they repeat that damn "go where you want and do what you want" line?

How many times will they repeat that damn "go where you want and do what you want" line?
Especially when the answer may be "I want to go to Megaton and kill some kids."

a game like Oblivion that has so many more characters living in this one place, and all these big, thriving cities to account for.

Which explains why all cities in Oblivion, and especially the Imperial City felt so deserted and lifeless.

Yup....one of the reason's I hated the game so much. I was like...where is everyone?

I know we seem to read things differently, but I read this as he's confident enough with the story, character management, C&C, ect* of Fallout 3 to say it's true to the series, and he's saying this to Fallout fans. He's also anticipating a significant number of those fans to adopt a "wait and see" approach, which he seems comfortable with.

It doesn't sound like the typical PR bluff, it sounds more like what KG was saying in the EuroGamer preview - that they felt like they had something to prove. To me, at least. Like I said, We'll see.

Uh-huh. Well, you're wrong. They tried this same thing before the first details came out and we fell for it then, trusting them not to do too many idiotic things.

Yet idiotic things are exactly what they did. Nobody here is stupid enough to take a "wait and see" stance a second time. They got their chance and they ruined it. Now the second run is only the game. That's their shot to prove it, we're way past buying their PR now. Hell, considering Bethesda's history, why anyone would put faith in anyone from Bethesda's PR division is beyond me.

If you honestly think anything that comes out of Pete Hines' mouth could possibly be interpreted as anything other than PR jingoism, you're being naive. Harsh, but true. Hell, it's true of all PR people, not just Pete Hines, because it's their job.

Besides, whenever someone needs to affirm that his product is an RPG as much as Bethesda does with Fallout 3 or Obsidian with Alpha Protocol, it sends off alarm bells in my head.

Um...I don't see how that's any different than what Pete Hines said.

"I imagine that if you need convincing then you probably won't be until the game comes out and enough people tell you that the story is really good, or you try it for yourself and decide."

there's no need to put faith into anybody. You can either be convinced, or you can't. If you can't you are taking a wait and see approach.

We're fully aware of that and have spent years working on that aspect of the game to make it as good as possible.

I imagine that if you need convincing then you probably won't be until the game comes out and enough people tell you that the story is really good, or you try it for yourself and decide.

Fallout 3 is true to the Fallout series; it's an RPG. That doesn't mean that we don't spend a lot of time on the combat and making it as fun and as good as possible.

I don't usually pick on these for something as trivial as choice of words but notice how he keeps repeating the word good instead of great or awesome. I thought Oblivion was "good "but i'm not a registered member on any of its fan sites.

That quote is about the story. I was talking about his remark on the game as a whole, the whole "it's an RPG" bit.
