Playstation Universe interviews Pete Hines

PSU: What platform is lead for development? Are you finding one easier than the other?

We usually use the Xbox 360 as our lead platform because it has some very good tools for providing feedback we need in managing things like memory allocation, load times, framerate, etc. But we develop each platform simultaneously and ultimately the game has to run and be tweaked to run on each platform as well as possible.

Good thing I just bought myself an XBox then. Although I won't be buying FO3 new... I'll just wait until it's available second hand for trade.

I'm getting pretty sick of the ass-kissing questions that many "journalists" ask game developers.

Isn't anyone critical anymore?

That would be too much to ask, but at least to get Bethesda's cock out of their mouth wouldn't be so hard, would it?

This interview basically goes "Isn't Fallout 3 gonna be awesome? Yes it will" repetead ad nauseam with each question and answer.

Console war, movie format war, does the normal person 'care' at this moment?

http://news.zdnet.com/2100-9595_22-6212400.html?tag=nl.e550

Sony is desperate for titles to play on the PS3.

Why not expect a Sony affiliated media mouth to be so sweetly solicitous.

Sony marketing.
Why they consider a PS3 model that is not compatible with the PS2 titles, that brought them this far, makes little sense to me as a consumer.

Was sent a Sony questionnaire recently and I stated, I still played games
... on the PC,
was irate how they abandoned the PS2,
and had NO plans to buy a PS3.
Price and the Xbox were not the issues.
PS3 means nothing to me.
Sooner see me with an iPhone, a shaved butt, and a ''Free Brittany Spears'' crop top.

No 'killer application' titles sponsored,
Blu-ray quality at a too high price ,
and video industry back room bargaining in the movie format war,
NOT,
not the bundling of an attractive set top box,
and something worth the TIME and money to feed said device,
Sony may still lose.
Lose big.

Sony appears to have forgotten how their Betamax failed against VHS,
AND,
and that the DVD player feature helped sell PS2's.

"Wii-ll'' there be PS3's in Fall 2008 to play FO3?

Shouldn't Bethesda be considering a Wii port?

We have a lot of the original materials from the first two games so we can look at not only how they looked in the original games, but also what the developers were going for when they came up with the idea.

Or you could have brought in an original dev on the team and asked him directly. But I guess your interpretation, rather than what they actually were going for is far more important when doing what you do best.

Oh yeah, kudos to the author for creating one of the most memorable gaming journalism lows. Quite a deed, considering how stiff the competition is becoming.

I would say that our intent is to have Fallout 3’s soundtrack do that again with music that reflects the gameplay and surroundings, while also staying true to the type of music the rest of the series has used. In addition to the original soundtrack, we also have the licensed music we’re using, which features music from the period before the war. So lot’s of 40’s and 50’s music featuring groups like The Ink Spots, who were featured in the first two Fallout games.

No word about Falloutish music though. Sure, Ink Spots with 'Maybe' and Louis Armstrong with 'A kiss to build a dream on' but that's all. How about ambient (I think) like in Vault 13, Brotherhood or Cathedral?
I guess you'd have to do more than just watch the intros to know about it, huh?

Obviously we spent a lot of time looking at the games themselves, but also the concept art for those games. We have a lot of the original materials from the first two games so we can look at not only how they looked in the original games, but also what the developers were going for when they came up with the idea.
Yeah, FO1 devs tried to put baggy Vault uniforms but poor guys didn't have the technology to do it back then.
Now with immersive 3D and FPP we finally can look at Falloutish baggy suits.
the PipBoy
AFAIK, changed.
Vault Suit
AFAIK changed.
Yay.
Now, we all know everyone at Bethesda are the kings of NPC's and A.I.
Yeah, go to youtube and search 'oblivion bugs' or 'oblivion glitches'.
Enough with the blowjobs already mr. journalist.

Having the experience of working on one very large RPG certainly helps when you’re making another.
I thought the last rpg they made was Daggerfall?
PSU: How does the Enclave fit into the bigger storyline of Fallout 3? Can you please divulge us some juicy details?

Another area we aren’t ready to go into yet.
:D
More like 'we want to put them in the game to show people that we know about Enclave but we haven't thought about it seriously yet. We'll make something up the day before release'.

We usually use the Xbox 360 as our lead platform because it has some very good tools for providing feedback we need in managing things like memory allocation, load times, framerate, etc
No comments needed.

Perhaps they're hoping for the obscene good luck that Starcraft had, where just three weeks before launch they did an entire re-design and floored everyone because there were too many comments on it looking like 'Orcs in space' if I recall correctly.

However that would require two things, decent and dedicated programmers, and respect for fans, Beth seems to have neither, hence why they have no truly memorable titles that have stood the test of time. (To my knowledge, I can't see Oblivion still being played two years from now, and I doubt Fallout 3 will last past 2 years either.)

just to throw my 2c... he said that if you CHOSE to be a melee character you could play the whole game not firing a gun. OK. Sooooo.. having in mind all the bull*it about ammo being scarce in the holly name of imershun and whatnot, if I f*ing CHOOSE to be a damn SHOOTER, can i play the friggin thing without having to resort to ElderScrollish FP bashing of whatever in close view. Seems pretty inconsistent to me.
Damn, I lost it again...

Isn't it amazing how a multi-million dollar industry is being covered by yoyos not competent enough to write for a highschool newspaper?

From the creators who brought you The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion comes one of the best post-apocalyptic role-playing games ever - Fallout 3.
 i can't stop laught at that. This Interview is so badly, waste of time..

OLOL!!1

RPG of the year! Don't mind the fact we haven't played it yet. We're too busy sucking PR dick to have a clue about post apoc rpgs. BEST *gaglle*GAEM EVAR! *slurrrp*

And you're just a bunch of fanatics that want exactly the same thing that was in the first two games. Times move on, progress happens! IMMERSHUN! *smackglobbble*

The art direction in Fallout 3 definitely succeeds in capturing the visual spirit of its predecessors.

It does? Wow. Good thing they told us, otherwise I've thought, y'know, the nuclear cannons, Resident Evil style supermutants and patched power armor were PRETTY FUCKING FAR FROM ITS PREDECESSORS.

We spent a ton of time churning out a lot of concept art and going through multiple iterations to get the look and feel of things right. That includes all of the iconic elements from the series – the PipBoy, Vault Suit, and so on

Good work, Bullcrap Astoundo. That time spent on concept art 'churning' certainly was productive because those are two things you certainly *didn't* get right.

Dhurr.

This is a copy-paste of the introduction sentence, bolded by me.

As much as I find the entire interview incredibly ridiculous, I don't think that removing a part that drastically changes the meaning of the sentence was a very good idea.

Unless, of course, the article was edited later on to partially hide the blatant sucking up to Bethesda.

Saying that in the first place. It's a good thing he realized his mistake...
