Post-apoc fiction

In fact, a swift scan of Amazon's UK site reveals that it's out over here on DVD. Fruit.

Ah, nice to know. I may have to pick up a DVD copy myself (VHS copy is nearly worn out due to over use.)

Let me know what ya think of it.

Edit: Grammar.

To me the very best part is the beginning, when they start playing Don't Fear, (The Reaper) by Blue Oyster Cult, while panning over all the dead bodies. 8)

The miniseries is ok. Not as good as the book...but what ever is?

It's worth seeing, in my opinion.

If it was as good as the book, they would have had to make it a full series, possibly even more than one year to fit all the content that had to be cut.

THAT would have been cool.

Definitely a must-see though.

Another great movie for the post-apocalypitc feel is Soylent Green. There is no nuclear war, but the world suffers from severe over-population and a catastrophic lack of food from a dying planet.

The end result is the same: a world of misery and suffering on a global level.

Of course, Soylent Green has one of the best endings of its time, and a timeless quote, which I won't repeat because it woulld spoil the plot.

I usually group Soylent Green and Omega Man together, because they both star Charleton Heston and are very similar in setting.

You could also read the book that Soylent Green is based on, Make Room! Make Room! by Harry Harrison.

Currently I am watching MadMax2 [its commercial now, so I can post about it]. Didnt know that so much things came into Fallout from this movie (at least it looks so) - one-sleave armour, shotgun, metal armour, those different colour punks [or what]. Some moments are just like from Fallout - e.g. when Max is standing in his stylish jacket with wastland in his back. Geesh..meanwhile it all feels a bit lame..oh well, you cant wish everythings, the movie is not so new anyway. But its cool feelng watching it. Like wide-screen Fallout, ya know.

I am surprised no one mentioned Stalker yet.

So atleast:
Stalker (Tarkovsky)
Mad Max movies (Haven't never ever seen the first one.. I suppose I'll have to find it on the internet :? )
Samuel Beckets plays (I think i spelled it wrong :P)

I cant really say where you could find any plays by becket. I saw few on the telly last year.. They dont really have too much action but the atmosphere and the dialogue and the general level of odd'ness is great. :ok:

About Stalker I am not so sure. Of course, a movie of Tarkovsky is something, but the few times I have seen it..duh..it did not catch me up. I enjoyed better the original book not the movie. But, good you mentioned, maybe I should take another look to film, it was long time ago when I saw it last time anyway.

Some other great books and flicks for the post-apocalyptic/world falling apart theme:

- Dinner at Deviants Palace, by Tim Powers (hard to find but I seriously recommend this for any post-apoc fiction fans)

- The Gunslinger series, by Stephen King

- Logans Run (old flick, pretty strange, but has Vault-like people)

- 1984, by George Orwell (awesome, awesome book; not very Fallout-y, but democracy is crushed after WW3)

- Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep, by Philip K. Dick (they based Blade Runner on this book, but the book is almost completely different - and better, including wastelands and all)

- 28 days later (interesting movie, more a zombie film than a post-apoc, but has a good deal of post-apoc elements)

- Escape from New York (film; again, not exactly post-apoc, but has Fallout-y elements; Snake's adventures through NYC are very Wanderer-ish, if the Wanderer were an evil-minded bastard)

The Day After (1983)

The frightening story of the weeks leading up to and following a nuclear strike on the United States.

Anyway, been a loooooong time since I've seen it; I do remember that it was decent at least though. Be prepared to be depressed after this show, its quite tragic.

- Escape from New York (film; again, not exactly post-apoc, but has Fallout-y elements; Snake's adventures through NYC are very Wanderer-ish, if the Wanderer were an evil-minded bastard)

There are tons of elements from Escape from New York and Escape from L.A. in both Fallout games, tons, one day try to find them , it`s a fun way to play again
