Post-apocalyptic RPG "After Reset" rebooted on Kickstarter

After Reset RPG is a sci-fi post-apocalyptic role-playing game that many may already be familiar with. Inspired by original Fallout 1&2, Baldur's Gate and Planescape:Torment. It has recently been rebooted with a kickstarter campaign:

"Hey, guys! I bet many of you already know me. My name is Richard, and I’m the creator and game director of After Reset RPG.
Here I’d like to tell you a little about our game, which we have been working on for more than a year.
You know, we were all really upset by the cancellation of Fallout: Van Buren, the cancellation of Knights of the Old Republic III, cancellation of Neverwinter Nights III - while instead the video game industry has just - flooded us with "fast-food" MMOs, - trying to fake us, mere gamers, with their brands. So, being similar minded RPG players like you, we were tired of being disappointed, tired of waiting for miracles - so we decided to fill in the gap ourselves. We wanted to relive the emotions and epic stories from old school RPG’s and decided to make our own miracle. And I’m sure that together we CAN build that theme park! With blackjack, caravans, and hookers, of course! :)

With these things in mind, After Reset is based on three pillars of design from the good old days. You can expect:

* A POST-APOCALYPTIC ATMOSPHERE, developed with a focus on sci-fi realism and more locations to explore than Fallout 1 and 2 combined (for more info, check out our concept arts and screenshots, and watch for updates here on KickStarter).
* A NONLINEAR STORY, with the freedom to choose between a ton of branches and endings which influence the whole setting - even beyond the game you play.
* HARDCORE MECHANICS in the best traditions of D&D and SPECIAL, we have created our own system called SACPIC (for more info, check that section of the forum and coming updates), where you will be able to customize every aspect of your character. Of course, you’ll also be able to choose from a list of pre-made ones if you just want to jump in and play!

Drooling yet? Well… we’re just getting started."

FearMonkey: It's their second kickstarter campaign.

Their first one failed: https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/blackcloudstudios/after-reset-rpg?ref=nav_search
Heh, they asked $900,000 the first time ;) (I am still laughing)

Nevertheless, I hope their will get a lot of money (while I am typing this message, they already gathered $34,070 out of $35,000).

I have tested their demo (ok I know it's an old alpha version): I really wish they'll succeed to create an atmosphere as good as old Fallout games.

Looks interesting. Very little money they ask for makes me a bit worried.
I will follow this project from the hills a while :)

I love post apoc games, and I wish the team a lot of luck and I really hope they can achieve their goals. But I believe that at least for the moment, any post apoc game that is not really offering something extremly unique, will have a very hard time. I mean, you should not forget that we have a lot of post apoc or close to post apoc games in the works. Not to mention the games that follow a similar path with the gameplay. You have Insomnia a Diesel Punk game, Wasteland, a new Torment game and probably many more that I cant remember right now. And games that follow a similar gameplay, like Pilars of Eternity, Shadowrun and so on. And 35 k for a game? Hmm. Seems very very low. Just saying.

Anyway, I dont want to be the party pooper. I really hope they can achieve their goals. I want to see people succeed with their work.

How do they only need $35k for this game?
They will be living of from burritos and diet coke for most of the production.

Crni, as Xanax already pointed out: this is their second Kickstarter campaign. The first one was good for about $50,000. This time they've already collected more than $75,000. They got another $15,000 via PayPal. And then there was the Kickstarter campaign for the graphic novel that is sort of the prequel to the game: that was good for another $15,000. It's not the $900,000 they initially thought they needed, but it's a good start.

The project looks good so far. The only things that really worry me are:
[1]that they namedrop the Fallout games in pretty much every paragraph they write. How about coming up with something completely different that is still heaps of fun to play?
[2] that they decided to split the game up in chapters - because their limited budget pretty much forces them to do so.

*shrugs* no clue, something I dont understand though, and this is really not only about this project, how some game developers on kickstarted ask for 500 000, 800 000 some even 1m $ to finish their projects while others ask for less then 100 000.

Just curious.

The first kickstarter didn't reach the 900k goal, so they didn't receive any money from it.

Really?

Despite not reaching our goal of $900,000, we managed to gain $50,000 worth of pledges towards the initial goal as well as an additional $15,000 from separate PayPal donations. Those donations helped us see that there are indeed gamers who want to play After Reset RPG.

Then that is either badly phrased or a blatant lie, innit?

That's not how kickstarter works, though. If the project doesn't meet its goal, the backers aren't charged. So unless they're referring to some other source of backers, then it is badly phrased or a blatant lie.

They got $50k worth of pledges on Kickstarter, which didn't equate to any actual cash since they didn't meet their goal but which showed them that the project had generated at least $50,000' worth of fan interest. They also received $15k in actual cashy money via PayPal contributors, which is perhaps the more significant as the money was given in good faith out of a desire for the project to reach fruition, without any safety net and without expectation of anything in return except for a chance to buy the game when it was finished.

Hence, they received "$50,000 worth of pledges" as well as $15,000.

Personally, I'm too strapped for pledges or paypal, but I'm insanely jealous of everyone that wasn't and I'm quite happy that After Reset is going to see the light of day.
