Post-Great War Africa

The post-war fate of other countries and continents in the Fallout universe is an interesting notion to explore. However, as it is in most post-apocalyptic scenarios, the Anglosphere and other developed nations seem to get the most attention.
Africa's historical narrative is an interesting one, full of colonialism, conflict, power-crazed dictators, oppression, revolution, etc. WWII is seen by most as the turning point for African fortunes, and the turning tide of human liberty led to the independence of nearly every African state from the 1950's onwards. Communism and capitalism even clashed in Africa during the Cold War (i.e. the Border War and the National Party's aggressive campaign against pro-communist African parties). Seeing as South Africa was a nuclear power up until 1994 and many African states were sympathetic to Middle Eastern doctrines, it's quite plausible to assume that they may have exchanged warheads at some point in the Great War.
This begs the question; what is your opinion of what happened to Africa?

Purely depends on whether or not the "Winds of Change" occurred in Africa, since otherwise it could still be a mostly colonial endeavor.

The possibility of Africa surviving mostly un-harmed, would be quite a possibility (atleast conventional effects of war, radiation would still be a problem).

So any damage to Africa, IMO, would be due to power struggles happening since the major powers have ruined themselves.

I always figured the smaller, less noticeable nations, would be much better off as most nations with global power projection, would be gone.

Interesting question. I doubt the western powers would spend too many nukes evaporating African cultural centres. Obviously, some would come under attack, obvious "global cities" like Johannesburg and Cairo, but most of the exchange would be dealt between eastern and western powers.

Also, the massive exploitation of African nations, particularily in the Congo basin would probably cease "over night"

The result is probably a rather "anti climactic" increase in living standards in many African places :I

Along with South America, we might have to find out how involved they were in the "cold war"-scenario IN the Fallout universe. Angola, Ethiopia and Mozambique could end up representing "red" countries, while Zaire/Congo, Kenya and most of southernmost Africa would represent western interests.

Keep in mind it would still be crazy. The power grab alone might still run up death count. Tribalism and its many disagreements, would have one final, climactic showdown, to determine the new order.

I've got a feeling religion would definitely play a role in the post-war African reconstruction. You've got radical Muslims in the north and east, Orthodox Afrikaans Christians in the south, and traditional Africanists in between. Come to think of it, I'd love to read/write a fanfic concerning religion in Fallout as a whole.

I actually made a forum about the post-war status of Antarctica previously. Indeed, it is an interesting topic to explore- lesser developed continents and their place in the Fallout world.

I'm assuming a few of the African nations were members of NATO, allies of the USA and European Commonwealth, meaning that they likely weren't on good terms with the Chinese or the Soviets. Interestingly, Africa is referenced in Wasteland as having some sort of power struggle between NATO members and Soviet allies. With Fallout being a spiritual successor and all that, I think we can safely say this is the same for Fallout's pre-war Africa too.

I suspect involvement in the European Commonwealth-Middle East War (2052-2060).

In the Fallout Bible, it was mentioned that wildlife is a huge problem in post-war Africa. Honestly, I probably don't think there was much change in the continent, which would mean any game set there wouldn't be too different from anything in real life. Probably a bunch of tribes and government holdouts in little city-states fighting off post-nuclear wildlife and each other.

i have a feeling the colonial era did not end in the fallout universe. therefore a lot of places would have been colonial centers and thus would have been nuked extensively.

the post apocalyptic period would have then been the postcolonial era. probably a lot of warlords fighting over territory just like in the 60s and 70s. a lot of amins, mugabes, etc.

also a great deal of tribalism and primitivism. oh and huge mutated wildlife!

certainly there is a lot of material for new games. :)

Pretty sure the four days of rain and fallout after the Great War pretty much decimated the entire world. The whole world is a wasteland. There are likely areas that are completely ruined and lifeless, and others where humanity got a foothold and survive well. Fallout was NEVER about other countries. It's American all the way. it would be cool to be able to explore another continent via DLC or a mod, but I'm not hung up on it.

If I had to make a guess, I'd say before 2077 it was entirely ravaged as a continent by resource wars and Cold War styled proxy conflicts. During the Great War itself the more civilized countries that would have allied with America or China would have been nuked to high hell like the rest of the world. Whatever was left untouched by bombs was likely bathed in radiation carried by the wind, and without the miracle of FEV there's likely not much life left.

So in other words, desolate and in ruin. Like the rest of the world.

It's not like it matters anyway. I never got the obsession over what the rest of the world was like. Fallout has been and always will be about America only. It's part of the setting's style.
