PSM3 Fallout 3 platform comparison

I always knew you had to do a lot of stuff to make stuff work on the PS3, (and the PS2) but I didn't know if the XBox was the same. So anyway, what you say makes a lot of sense then.

EDIT: That might also explain why the 360 is a little more popular. :)
I would venture to guess that in this case, Bethesda was just too lazy to optimize Fallout 3 for the PS3, hence they haven't bothered catering to PS3 owners and are shafting them with an inferior version, which they could have easily remedied by delaying the game a bit. Though I don't know if all the time in the world could fix the bad design that permeates the game, though that's another topic entirely.

As off topic seems to be in at the moment.

The Commodore 64 was my first computer/console.
Always baffled me how they managed to put games on regular cassettes :D

On topic. Metal Gear Solid 4 is proof that making fantastic looking games for the PS3 is quite possible.
Both consoles are good, but I prefer PS3 for different reasons. Strong points being the genious controller
(so glad they didn't change that), Blue Ray and free online services.
Also I see Sony as the lesser of two evils. Not putting much weight into 'lesser', though.

fallout 3 its hurting PS3 with his crappy grafics, hell beth dont see the ps3 grafic potencial.

well.... I for one an really happy with this news.

I was worried that with the X360 as the lead development platform that they would concentraite on texture that would fit in it's memory. It looks like that fear was not founded.. I am glad they took the extra effort to make the PC textures better.

I know there might still be some issues with controls and whatnot.. but things are looking up for the PC version I have on preorder.

Gawd I miss the Xbox, its audio system (I'm an Audio Coder) was a dream to work on... *sniff*

Have you ever coded on the Atari 520 ST? Or was that way before your time?

Yes, but not professionally. The Atari ST (I miss my old one too) was one of the better computers for MIDI work.

While I don't work for Bethesda (though I've developed a game for them) I would say the games industry as a whole does see the potential of the PS3, however we also get to know the limitations of each system. The main limitations of the PS3 is slightly less RAM for textures over the 360 and a slower less capable GPU than the 360.

However the PS3 has a more powerful and flexable processor, which has vector processing capability in the SPUs. SPUS are great, as they are very fast, blindingly so, but they also have a limitation in that they cannot do predicitve branching very well. As long as you keep conditional statments out of SPU code (and a few other advanced CPU tricks as well) then they run very fast indeed.
So generally the idea is to use some of the CELLs processing power to prop up the slower graphics system.

As for the washed out look on the PS3 over Xbox360. I actually dont know what is causing this, but its happening on game after game after game, so its probably something to do with the hardware.

As for Blu-ray... Yep the extra storage is really nice, but we all just wished that Sony had made its data transfer rate faster than the existing DVD standard as well. Data Transfer speed is just as important as storage.

It's nice to hear confirmation from someone who's worked with both systems. I had chalked the washiness up to the way the nVidia GPU was rendering, but having played Soul Calibur IV I realized that maybe it was just the developers not being able to optimize for the PS3 and compensate for some sort of hardware difference. The washiness is really obvious to me in the PS3 version of Bioshock and it looks almost as if the lighting lost its color. I would venture to guess, without having played the PS3 version, that Fallout 3 will suffer from the same fate.

I disagree, data transfer rate is more important than greater storage. That said, isn't Blu-ray supposed to have the ability to have a higher data transfer rate than DVDs, even if they aren't there yet?
