Well for me it was never more then killing zombis and daemons in masses. And that I got from Doom 3 as well. I liked the levels.
I understand your logic though. But for me it was a rather minor detail. What really disturbed me is that they didn't managed to get some engine out which gives you the chance to fight thousand of monsters at once. Like previous doom games did.
Half of the fun in past doom games was it to get the monsters fighting each other.
