Re-creating Fallout 1?

I don't think a Fallout 1 remake is going to happen, you will need someone with mongo-dedication and those sorts of folks want to work on something new, not reiterate the past (for the most part).

Pseudo FO1 world map travel can be scripted, I was considering a giant switch script.. didn't figure out world map integration, but the basic premise of reaching a border and bringing up a list of locations which are really a set of interiors is not too far of a stretch.

I personally thinking walking across an empty wasteland has a sort of appeal though, could you hold the attention of modern gamers long enough though to journey say 5 minutes without some location marker popping up congratulating them? I don't know, thats why I think they just went with a condensed land with constant locations all about (also it probably helped with their art direction and development).

I'd still like to see some interpretation of how Junktown would look like. and Vault 15.

Oooh, and the Glow... It would actually glow.

That's just the thing, according to the random encounters, it's a waste. Tumbleweeds and wasted roads, maybe some cliffs. Very, very dull to travel through.

And if the map should be seamless, then something must be between the settlements and similar to Fallout 3, the empty space must be filled with something.

The reason the "random encounter" areas look like empty waste is that no matter where you are in the desert you get teleported to same looking random encounter area. ;) If they had included Fallout 3 style landmarks such as a huge collapsing bridge, gas stations, small abandoned shacks, etc, it would look rather weird how whenever you fought a random battle in a random part of the wasteland you were always near an identical looking gas station or shack or bridge. ;)

Who knows what interesting sights there may have been, just a few metres away off the edge of the random encounter area?

Well, I the term "re-imagination" might suggest something like the new version of Battlestar Galactica, which is only very loosely based on the old 70s TV series. In terms of story and "significant locations" I'd like a remake of Fallout 1 to be pretty close to the original - the fact that it is making the game 3D, first person and real-time are big enough changes without changing the story or the layout of all the levels. ;)

But when it comes to the outdoor maps... well, your journey across the wasteland was represented by a little red dot cause really that's the only way it could be done back then. Similar to travelling on the world map in the old Final Fantasy games (a gigantic character striding across a tiny world!) - back then it simply wasn't possible to make truly vast detailed levels that a player could walk across for 5 minutes, let alone half an hour or 2 hours etc. The red dotted line across the map was due to technical limitations. When you were supposed to fight something you got teleported to a little "random encounter" area, just like the battle areas in the older Final Fantasy games. Every random encounter area in desert looked identical, every random encounter area in mountains looked identical. It was a technical limitation, and shouldn't be considered a core part of what made Fallout a great game.

However, we ourselves might be restricted by the same technical limitations - we may not have the talent to create a convincing gigantic wasteland. Using the Fast Travel map would neatly side-step the issue. But I'd rather create a wasteland rather than try to side-step it.

German dude needs a bigger team, I suppose.

Nah, but seriously. If only for curiosity. People could at least make some models for Ian and Tandi and Tycho and and and...

This is an awesome idea, but extremely ambitious. The best thing about it is that all the graphics are basically done, as its within the confines of an existing Fallout game.

Make a working map.

Recreate the map, and how it works, on a picture file. Then all you have to make are the encounter locations. This vault, that crash location, find the oasis, fight scene locations, etc... and basically travel on the "map" until you either find a location or until something finds you.

That is true. This thread shows there are a lot of things to work out in terms of building the map but I'm sure it could be worked out quite easily. What I am wondering is, would it be possible to use existing voiceovers from the original?

It would be fun for the novelty of it, but why not work on something new? Besides, how would an amateur render the Master? He looks nothing like any existing model.

That is pretty awesome, I wonder if he would allow his resources to be utilised?

I believe the expression "modder's resource" implies as much. I guess you didn't read the description. :P

Consider this mod to be a modder's ressource for anyone willing to undertake a Fallout 1 TC.

To get the hang of Bethesda's newest CS, I decided to rebuild Vault 13 and Vault 15, both vaults that were included in Fallout 1.
I am not going to make the whole of Fallout 1. Only Vault 13 and Vault 15.

Both vaults will be built exactly like in Fallout 1. Same computers at the same places. Same NPCs. Same assets. I've taken the freedom of adding more furniture to some rooms as I thought Fallout 1's vaults lacked in that department.

Since I'm basicly trying many features of the CS, NPCs will have schedules, some computers will be able to be hacked, you will be able to get healed at the Clinic and some NPCs will have dialogue. There will be two "quests" for you. Both were included in Fallout 1 : 1. Find the water thief. & 2.Putting an end to a possible mutiny.
By the way I'd love to be able to register on the NMA forums to share the project with them. But since Hotmail and GMail are on their blacklist, I can't register. And my ISP's email is not mine. I tried creating my own but got problems and it didn't work. Anyone has a good Email provider to suggest? Or maybe someone here who has a NMA account could post on my behalf? I'd appreciate it. :) (I know they have a thread about discussing the re-creation of Fallout 1)

Check out his thread on the Bethout forums.

Nah I didn't read the description, just watched the video. Awesome stuff Claw, thanks for posting that on his behalf.

Get this man an NMA account!

Well here I am!

Thank you Claw for linking the thread I made in the Bethsoft forums.

Just so you know, I'm not re-creating Fallout 1. I simply see this as art. Sketch artists would draw parts of the Vault from different perspectives, a cineast would re-create the Vault with a movie set and for me, I'm re-creating it in 3D.

I may in the future re-create other parts of Fallout 1 for the fun of it. But you'll never see me in a Fallout 1 Re-construction team.
I'm interested in re-creating the Military Base but there's no 3D asset of the vats.
The Khan's camp would be another very easy place to build.

Anyways, I'll let you guys know when the Vaults will be done. :)

I hate to be negative, but those vault layouts aren't even remotely like the Vaults from Fallout. They are just standard bethesda style vaults.

Fallout 1 is good as it is.

Pray tell, why fix that which ain't broken?

Because for people like me who never played the fallout games in the good old days, it's not that fun to go back to anymore (sadly). It takes far to long just to kill a rat. It's a very old game nowdays - getting a good & true port made to fallout 3 engine (or another moddable engine) would create an opportunity to get a bunch of new fans & people to the fallout world who is not used to play with... "classic" graphics.

Even I who played lots of game in those years (born -80 myself so) have a bit hard time going back to that bad graphics nowdays, even though I like story better than graphics.
