Two adventure games that everybody should check out are "Sanitarium" and "I have no mouth and i must scream". "Sanitarium" is an amnesiac's surreal romp through several disturbing mindscapes. "I have no mouth and i must scream" is a post-nuclear horror adventure which has the last few survivors of mankind serving as pawns for a merciless supercomputer that pretty much managed to destroy the world.

Good luck finding 'em though. :(

Go Mount&Blade! And go that moron at seattle-gothic for never played any other RPG asides from WoW and assumes that most RPG's are as easy as it is.

I hate people that exclusively play MMORPGs. Mount and Blade is much better than even a lot of commercial games out there. I'm glad you tried it out, the people who developed it deserve a lot of attention for making cavalry combat practical in a game.

Darwinia - one of the better games I've played. It's quite slow-paced and requires lots of thinking through before taking actions. A great stress-reliever. Well, in most cases.

Now, I know many people aren't fans of hip hop, but Australian hip hop is different (read: much much better) than the crappy american "i'm a gangsta, i fuck all my weeds and i cap all my bitches and i smoke all my niggas". The scene isn't massive in Australia, but it has some real talent behind it.

Artists such as:
The Hiltop Hoods
Matty B
Weapon X and Ken Hell

and many others are awesome for their lyrics, their style and their individuality.

Mount&Blade is great. In a time when Bethesda complained that mounted combat just wasn't viable, Mount&Blade came along and slapped them in the face. :P

Some tips from the metal scene.

Summoning
Tolkien inspired blackmetal band. Most people will probably think of bands like Blind Guardian or other powermetal bands when it comes to tolkien inspired music, but Summoning sounds nothing like them.

Its hard to describe their style, they play there own genre and with there own sound.

Found this fan made video on YT.

I think it captures what summoning is all about in a nice way.

Windir
Norwegian blackmetal.

This band have a unique sound, they mix a blend of old-school aggression with symphonic parts, and spice it up with a bit of Norwegian folklore.

One of the greatest bands ever imo!

Found this on YT. Not the best video but the music is still good...

Check it out ! :revolution:

Now now lets not go stereotyping. After all, it did start in America. The unfortunate truth is the American music industry refuses to support anything else. Record labels have become so bloated and massive that they see no reason to chance anything. Mainstreamed, all that variety is too confusing, so lets just streamline it all eh?

There are plenty of great hip hop artists out in America. In my previous post I listed a couple.

Blackulicious

Spooks

South Park Mexican (Before the... "incident")

Another is an unrecognized trip/hop artist from Alaska that I enjoy quite a bit. Rent To Own. www.myspace.com/rent2ownunedited

Again the problem tends to lie in the industry and their control over the market. They take the safe route while not exploring other potentially lucrative options... But, thats just big business...

Oh, sure, I agree. I have heard some good hip hop from America (my friend is a huge indie fan, I always hear it at his palce).

But Australian hip hop actually gets air time, just not overseas, barring one or two tracks from Hilltop Hoods, I think, which is a pretty major accomplishment.

Sven-Coop
This isn't a standalone game, but it is a mod to half-life. This is probably my favorite FPS to play on LAN. Basically, you and your friends go around shooting shit, coop style. There's quite a few good maps that you can download from the internet, so the game will keep you entertained for a while. You can play as Homer Simpson.

Majesty! since it was so much fun as far as I remember.
err.. Dungeon Keeper? or am I loosing the unpopular touch, because this one's, well, 'a must' :|

I've always liked Majesty. Granted, it's basically just one big balance problem, but If you can get past THAT...

Music:

If you like A Perfect Circle (or the softer side of Tool), check out Acroma (especially "Don't Think Just Move").

Avernum:
- Internet, Shareware
- Series of games
- Party-based RPG

go play the exile series
its 10x better than avernum, and is what avernum is essentially a remake of.
its amazing.especially the third installment, ruined world.
i would LOVEEEEEEE for a more wealthy developer to buy out this franchise and make the vhanatai come to life with a truly stunning remake of the entire 3 exile games.

the idea makes me tingle....

hmmm, games i recommend....
yeah i dunno.
how about fallout, its a pretty good game. ever heard of it?
disciples of steel comes to mind. iso crpg from 1994. google it ;)
how about worms 2? terribly fun game im sure most of us have played.
commandos 2 and 3. excellent realtime birds eye strategic combat game. similar to the fallout tactics ctb system, but better. you get to kill nazis!
splinter cell games. all of them. best stelth games ever made.
thief games as well, with the exception of the console remake. best mediveal stealth games ever made.
i could go on for pages, so ill stop here.

bands is also pages... but ill make some quickies based on my current playlist. its a bit hard for me since i dont listen to bands, i listen to songs (if you get my drift)
but ive got over a thousand bands on this here pc.

my current playlist of random awesome songs consists of-

Seal - Kiss From a Rose
epic song you may recognize from a batman movie.
beautiful work of art, and emotionally powerful.
R&B/soul/soft rock music.

Mushroomhead - Crazy
cover of a song by the aforementioned Seal. not a huge fan of mushroomhead myself, but this song is one of the better cross genre remakes ive ever heard. love it to death.
Nu-metal, but with a nice edge.

Bjork - Hyperballad
Bjork is... undefinable. extremely avant garde electro pop / soft rock / indie-alternative (kind of?) this is my favorite song of hers (aside from army of me)

Nevermore - The Sound Of Silence
great remake of the original song by Simon and Garfunkle. not as good as the original, but its by nevermore, and for you non-metal fans out there, they are an a great death metal group :)

Echo And The Bunnymen - The Killing Moon
ahh, classic song. also part of the soundtrack to donnie darko for those who might think theyve heard it somewhere. funky alternative classic-styled rock with a unique style. i love them.

Era - Enae Volare Mezzo
unique modernistic styled rock with no english vocals, reminiscent to accapella and soprano singing. very odd and an excellent find for anyone who wants something moody and epic feeling. i think i can hear a cello in it :P i think its in italian, but its beautiful, with many layers of vocal work by many vocalists at once.

The Seatbelts - Green Bird
the seatbelts are the band that does the music for cowboy bebop, the brainchild of yoko kanno. this is one of odder songs, i dont know how to define it. most of their music is jazzy/blues-rock, but this isnt, its something different.

Kenji Kawai - Making of Cyborg
traditional japanese mixed with modern atmospheric music, this is my favorite track from the ghost in the hsell OST. amazing and perhaps the best song for intellectual reading ive ever come across.

Mortiis - Everyone Leaves
black metal gone industrial electro emo. its.... odd. but loveable.

Stereomud - Perfect Self
one of the most emotionally powerful modern rock songs i have heard. words cant describe the feeling of elation it conjures into my mind, it truly makes me feel at peace. powerful and cryptic.

tweaker - Take Me Alive (The Rock Remix Edit)
Chris Vrenna - Pool Of Tears
Chris Vrenna - Flying on The Wings of Steam (Peter Reardon Remix)

gosh, i dont know what to say for chris vrenna. the amazing composer of the OST for american mcgees alice, a piece of art in the gaming world. also an ex band member and programmer for nine inch nails and marilyn manson, and currently working under the musical name of tweaker. his music is simply stunning. ranging from industrial to goth to rock to ambient to a sort of dark psychadelic atmospheric.

Star One - Master of Darkness
Star One - Intergalactic Space Crusaders

epic space opera by the genius that is arjen anthony lucassen of Ayreon.his music is nothing short of both lyrical genius and amazing power metal with a space theme. evejn if you dont LIKE power metal, you cant deny the awesome that is star one. all of the songs by star one are based on and inspired by specific works of science fiction, with a unique theme to each song rounding out the entire opera.

Mastodon - Cut You Up with a Linoleum Knife
the song that opens the aqua teens movie, and an amazing work of thrash hardcore mixed with a king diamond style of backup lyrics. one of the best metal songs ever to be made, and hilarious as a work of self parody.

I Mother Earth - God Rocket
great modern rock band, reminiscent of tool meets poprock. its some good stuff.

Ulver - Hallways Of Always
Ulver - Lost In Moments
Ulver - Porn Piece Or The Scars Of Cold Kisses
Ulver - The Future Sound Of Music
Ulver - Tomorrow Never Knows

amazing, avant garde expiremental band that started out as black metal but evolved into atmospheric electronic music. very unique, and mostly intrumental, unless you go to their older albums, which are black metal in the modern sense. stunning artists.

Beauty - Mute
industrial metal almost with a hint of grindcore, this band is unusual and bizarre. pretty hit or miss, but i love them. (or, HIM rather, since its jusyt one guy)

Agathodaimon - Cellos For The Insatiable
industrial death metal at its best. nother else needs to be said. they rule.

Babylon Zoo - Spaceman
industrial dance music. the kovenant, an industrial goth metal band, did an amazing remake of this song.

Avril Lavigne - Girlfriend
guilty pleasure

UNKLE - Lonely Soul
amazing song by the amazing unkle, alternative electronic. richard ashcroft on vocals from the verve. this song is superb.

Dana Swanson - I Like Your Booty (But I'm Not Gay)
from the aqua teens movie :P
another guilty pleasure even though the lyrics creep me out.
the beat is great.

Cocteau Twins - Heaven Or Las Vegas
late 80s soft rock (i think).
excellent song.

lol i need a hobby.

Wierd. For the longest time I thought I was the only one who ever heard of Outpost 2.

Unknown/Unpopular games:

Hmmm.....

GAMES:

X-Com: Interceptor:
--
The grand strategy and management of classic X-Com, but with varieties of space combat in customized fighter craft instead of tactical combat. The game is from about 1998, and moderately hard to find, but worth playing if you do.

Oddworld: Abe's Odessy/Exodus/Much's Odessey.
--
It doesn't really matter which Oddworld game, their all good. Cartoony but somewhat dark world of weird humour. The primary game series focuses on puzzles related to the environment and navigating NPCs through that environment to save them. It would be hard to explain it better then that without a long ass post so go wikipedia it.

Soviet: Strike or related games
--
You might be passingly familiar with the "Strike" series of games on the Sega Gensis. The core concept is you fly a helicopter on a flat plane over an open map, completing missions in a mostly non-linear order. Each game in the series changes the formulea a bit, some of the games including on foot segments and alternate vehicles. Good fun if you have a PlayStation or Gensis lying around.

Jet Moto 3
--
While I liked the previous games, 3 is the fastest and arguably best game in the series. Fugly as hell buy modern standards, but good for fast paced crazy jet hoverbike fun. I seriously hope someone re-makes this series someday.

MUSIC:

Blue Oyster Cult
--
Probably only known for the songs (Don't Fear) The Reaper, Burnin' For You, and (after Guitar Hero) Godzilla. An excellent Hard Rock/Metal band with excellent songwriting, often dark moody tone, and great inspiration. Aside from the above I highly recommend "Veteran of the Psychich Wars" (from the animated film Heavy Metal) and "Astronomy" (which was covered on the Metallica album Garage Inc.).

...Yah, the band from the "More Cowbell Skit" if your wondering.

Budgie
--
I somewhat obscure British hard rock band from the '70s. I don't have alot of their music, but everything I've heard I really like. A variety of sounds and speeds, but a distinctive 70s rock style. "Breadfan" and "Bandolier" come highly recommended. Also of note, Breadfan and another song called "A Crash Course in Brain Surgery" where also covered by Metallica on Garage Inc.

Age of Electric
--
Formerly known as simply "Electric". This group started as a The Cult coverband in the late 80s before releasing several albums of thier own material throught the 90s. Likely only recognizable for the song "Remote Control", they have several really great rock songs. I recommend "Aphrodisiac Smile", "Ugly", and "I Don't Mind".

T. Rex
--
A popular rock band from the late 60s and 70s headed by guitarist Marc Bolan. I put them on this list becuase, though well known with older generations, nobody under 30 has probably heard of them. Even though unkonw with modern crowds, their songs are somewhat frequently encounred in pop culture. For instance the song "Bang a Gong" has appeared in several commercials in the past couple of years. I highly recommend "Bang a Gong", "Jeepster", "Cosmic Dancer", and "Planet Queen" if your looking for some mellow but listen-able rock.

Sweet
--
This band sits in a similiar position as T. Rex. Most people under 30 have no idea who they are, but have heard alot of their songs. Suffice it to say, these are the guys that did "Ballroom Blitz", 'nuff said.

The following are YouTube links to videos featuring the songs I've recommended above.

Unfortunatley I can't find Aphrodesiac Smile, which is their best song.

T. Rex
Bang a Gong

Jeepster (Live, somewhat sketchy sound)

couldn't find decent videos of Planet Queen or anything else.

Man, I thought I am the only person listening to this. It is a pity though Nattramn couldn't continued his previous work, I was hopping to see Silencer active again.

A few of my favorite games that people never seem to play are: Planescape Torment (PC), Gitaroo Man (PS2/PSP), Phantom Dust (Xbox), and Killer7 (a few consoles). Phantom Dust is probably my favorite from that list -- especially since it's BC compatible with the 360, now.

Bands is a bit tougher. I worked at a radio station in Portland a few years back (covering sports), so I got immersed in a lot of local and indie groups. I'd have to say my favorite relatively unknown/unpopular band is Forgive Durden, though. If nothing else, their name is awesome.

Some more bands to listen out for are-
The Knife, Klank (especially the remix of animosity), Robots In Disguise, Dog Fashion Disco, Strapping Young Lad, Tech N9ne, Echo and the Bunnymen, Lady Sovereign, Cold War Kids, mc chris, Stromkern, Infected Mushroom, Psyclon Nine, Christian Death, Mount Sims, Arcturus, Ulver, Mindless Self Indulgence, Opeth and more!

I'll continue to edit this post til the amount of bands listed here is just pointlessly long :P

Unpopular bands? If you look for good underground black metal, check these out: 9th Circle, Akitsa, Arathorn, Bloodstained Dusk, Blot Mine, Carpe Tenebrum, Code, Dark Fury, December Wolves, Frostmoon, Furia (pol), Hodur, Lord Kaos, Meghorash, Myrddraal, Noenum, Ördög, Sigrblot, Sort Vokter, Stribog, Throne of Ahaz, Titan Mountain...

Could write about two hundred more but this will do :>
