Red Orchestra Sequel (Heroes of Stalingrad)

Nonagon

Still Mildly Glowing
So I heard about this upcoming title a little while ago, very interesting. I loved Ostfront the unreal mod when it first came out, and still play the stand-alone version regularly, I really hope that I can feel the same way about this one. Especially since it will be the first FPS to include a German-side single player campaign. It's about damned time. IMHO, Tripwire is awesome in providing some alternative settings than the mainstream drek. Here are some snippets from the PC Gamer article:
"Here’s a brave thought: nicking someone’s deltoid with a stray MG42 round shouldn’t hurt as much as a snipe to the lung. En route to authentic war-play, it’s an idea Red Orchestra: Heroes of Stalingrad intends to make real."
(...)
"the dev is looking to add accessibility without doing disservice to any fans that count bolt-action rifle assembly as part of their breakfast routine."
(...)
"Also new is Skirmish, TripWire’s take on Rainbow Six’s Terrorist Hunt—uniting up to 10 players for tense, respawnless co-op to clear out squads of AI."
(...)
"integrated squad commands and a first-person cover system"
(...)
"being less aware of your surroundings via a mini-map or colored nametags hanging over every enemy () made our session more about making tactical decisions with limited information and less about hovering our crosshairs over pop-up targets."
(...)
"Deployable MGs can bipod to almost any surface, and a mounting system let us hop through the train station’s broken windows to flank Germans"
So what do you people think about this one? It seems as though they are keeping some of the same old charm but adding in a few of the mainstream gimmicks. It should be worthwhile, I hope, at least for the German campaign. I just hope that they preserve some of the little things(Clicking after every shot to pull back the bolt on the bolt-action rifles comes into mind personally).

Here is the PDF of the PC Gamer issue that has some of the only info currently released for the title, and some crap pictures.

I never get bored of the Eastern Front stuff, so I am really looking forward to this one. Sounds really good.

In my opinion, Red Orchestra is the best military FPS ever made. Online sessions proved the theory of working tactics in RL towards gaming as successful. It's interesting and strokes my ego a-bit to use my military knowledge of warfighting in game, and taking out most FPS veterans with ease, just because the physics changed for balance toward simulation. My old roommate, who used to play in tournaments for quake 3, hated me so much when I educated him on bullet arc from a blot-action from 200 yards.

I played the original game during some free online beta they had going on with Steam a while back. Was pretty fun but I never bought into that realism stuff. There was one map I just played a bunch that had trenches and I would randomly run around corners with my submachine gun blazing.

How did the original all work out and play?

I've seen it on Steam, I have a couple people that play it a good amount, but there's no demo out to give it a try.

Well, here is a pretty good quality video that shows a somewhat limited view of the gameplay.

But let's try to keep on topic too

Random player: "Fuck man, their sniper is in a good spot. Our sniper just isn't doing it"

Narrator: "That's not true, my score is really good. It's a thankless job."

*Gets killed by friendly fire*

Classic.

That video was a bitchen' insight into the game. Its also unfortunately a bitchen' insight when morons think they know what the frack they are talking about. I would have switched sides, renamed to insult the player that thought his sniper was not "doing it"...

Unreal Engine 3 supports destructible environments, so what is the possibility that it will appear in RO2, I wonder? That could be interesting..

I doubt there'll be environmental damage outside of blowing sandbags/fences away, if that. I can already see people raging when they didn't get to play sniper; and endlessly griefing their team's sniper by constantly destroying his cover until he quits.

I think I saw in a tech demo for UE3 where an explosion just broke a bit off the surface, making an impact crater sort of thing. Not real destructible environments, but it would be enough to make it seem like those explosive tank rounds are really hitting something.

So you guys would recommend Red Orchestra? I like a good WW2 FPS, but I haven't seen one that really caught my imagination since I got the original Call of Duty.

A German single-player campaign sounds great, too. There never seemed to be a good reason why other WW2 FPSs didn't have one.

The original RO (ut2k4 mod) was amazing, and is probably my favorite ww2 shooter.

Haven't played it since they went commercial with it, but I'll definitely get HOS if they don't fuck it up (by dumbing it down). I can't recommend buying ostfront, as it's really late in its life-cycle; but keep an eye out for HOS.

I've now got the urge to play RO again, but I REALLY don't want to go through installing ut2k4 again with its 6 fucking cds.

Just buy it off steam for 20bucks. Includes all patches, which include good stuff... like troops being able to ride on the back of vehicles, and bullets can go through the vehicle drivers vision slit, and kill him while he's inside the vehicle, and AP rounds can kill specific crew members of vehicles while not destroying it entirely.

I just bought RO yesterday and it's the most fun I've had in a WW2 game.

Shame there's not many US servers :|

I'm really looking forward to the new game, though it's a shame that i can't play the old one anymore due to it not being wireless internet friendly...

How so? From apps point of view wireless is same as wired.

Edit: I'm guessing you went from some sort of DSL or cable or whatever that terminated directly at your computer to a wireless router. The thing is, the router blocks all unsolicited traffic from entering your network. Therefore, you need to configure your router to use port forwarding for your PC, i.e. tell it to direct incoming traffic coming from the internet at certain ports towards a certain PC on your network (your gaming rig).

Ports in question are listed here:

Well i can still technicaly play the game, however every minute or so i get these horrendous stutters that last about 5 seconds or more. Now when talking about RO that is a very bad thing, since during these stutters i get stuck in one position while everything around me is going the way it was and that usually makes me a very good target practice for the opponent snipers.

Nothing i tried helped, including port forwarding. Maybe it's because i'm using a crappy wireless USB adapter, but i haven't had any problems with it while playing games like Day of Defeat, so who knows...
