We here at NMA have been graced with yet another Van Buren design doc, without further ado I give you The Reservation:
The Reservation, formerly known as the Los Alamos Nuclear Testing Facility, was a top secret military & nuclear research facility before the bombs dropped. It was tasked with developing and building the nuclear missiles that went into the B.O.M.B. satellites.
Happy reading.

Very interesting!! keep em coming

at this rate we should get all of VB's stuff in like...... 20 years ? The another 5 years to finish Fallout 3. Yes.....I guess I could wait some more. :D

My favorite Van Buren location, brilliantly written. Great Fallout stuff, but even more interesting to people interested in gaming design.

This is the piece to get, kids, it`s really really good, it really raises the bar to whatever Bethesda has planed.

Briosa, you're pretty well connected, generally. Do you have any contacts in the Bethesda FO3 Dev team/Pre-Production team (or whatever they are calling it at the moment)?

It might be a good idea to show them the design docs, to let them know where VB was going. Not, I hasten to add, to emulate it (that would be ... foolish, to copy a failed game made by another team entirely) but to learn from it. Where it was right, where it was wrong; I'm fairly sure there is something that they can gain from this material.

No i don`t. I`ve exchanged a couple of PMs with MrSmileyFaceDude, he seems a smart and polite guy, buzz him if you want.

They hate NMA leaking Van Buren stuff, or so i`ve heard, don`t know why though.

Well, technically, isn't all this stuff theirs now? Or is it just a rights thing. I forget.

O ya, The docs neat-o. Good grab.

They have the VB design docs. More than we do, in fact.

From what I gather, they do have the material, they don't own any rights to it, though, only Interplay does and they just provided the design docs as part of the deals. The only one that, as far as I can tell, has the right to stop us is Interplay. I think a dime buys more legal representation than they can afford, though.

That does mean Bethesda wouldn't be pissed. This is "the game that could've been", they're really not anxiously waiting for it to be compared to their game, especially since, knowing the Fallout fanbase, such comparisons will probably be negative for them in any case.

Yeh, can't blame 'em

Very good read, although for some reason I was drawing similarities between The Master's goals, and Dr. Clark's.

As I've said before, this would have been a most interesting sequel.

Thanks, Herve.

Wanker.

I can't tell you how much I was looking forward to seeing this area complete in-game. *sniff*

Hey Puuk, how long would a design doc like that take you to create? Do certain sections of it take longer than others? What's the easiest part and hardest?

Learn all about writing a design doc, and much more. A very interesting and useful site.

This read is awesome...

DId anyone else catch the pit about lilean and her being an important escape? She has some virus or injection in her that related to the Main Character's own virus/injection...

This makes for a VERY interesting plot... what could it be? what could be going on here? Its bugging the hell out of me

I'm so jealous of what a funded game design team is able to accomplish and do, it's driving me crazy. I am deriving some enjoyment from seeing what might have been. I've garnered a few ideas from these docs that we 'may' be able to implement. I think these guys (the F3 team) have a lot of talent. I just hope we can bring something at least half as good to the table someday.

This is an incredible bit of Fallout history, here. Reading it makes me realize that this would have been the first game I would have purchased two copies of... hah, I always thought that was a foolish way of generating support for a game, but I would have done it just to have a sealed copy to look at.

I wish docs like these were available for RPGs that ARE out. The Fallout bibles were great, but the detail involved in either of the two design docs for F3 makes me wonder what the docs from F1 and F2 are like.

'ang on...if the ghouls were irradiated while below-ground shorly after the war, how come the Sub-levels are all radiation free?

Just kidding. Great area. Has a lot more balance between different types of characters than the last one did.
