According to Charlie Wiederhold, one of the developers who worked for 3D Realms between 1998 and 2006, reports that Duke Nukem Forever was a project concocted by industry leaders that would span decades... on purpose. The original blog, now re-posted on Wiederhold's space on GamingIsStupid.com as of May 6, first appeared back on December 17, 2007.

However, his blog--labeled as The Chair Story--talks about a meeting taking place before E3 2001 concerning the already delayed PC game, Duke Nukem Forever. Many say that the blog is merely a big joke, however certain elements within the statement answers the question as to why the development process has stretched over the past twelve years.

...

Hm. Apparently Charlie Wiederhold himself has confirmed that the above story is only a joke.

Or perhaps he is lying to cover up the greater truth???? Mystary!!!!!!one

3D Realms Countersuit Reveals Continuing Duke Nukem Forever Work, New Duke Game

Duke Nukem series creator 3D Realms/Apogee Ltd. has responded to publisher Take-Two's lawsuit over the incomplete state of Duke Nukem Forever, revealing that 3DR is continuing to work on the long-delayed title alongside word that a previously unknown separate Duke game was in the works at a "well-known videogame developer."

The new effort, titled "Duke Begins," was part of the October 2007 Agreement that saw Take-Two provide 3D Realms with $2.5 million. That sum was paid July 2008 in order to "help fund the development of the DNF game," with 3D Realms having previously said the money was "in connection with another agreement for an unannounced game."

On Duke Nukem Forever

The developer also shed additional light on negotiations with Take-Two regarding a 3D Realms-developed Xbox 360 edition of the then-PC only Duke Nukem Forever. Along with the Xbox 360 port, the negotiations included the addition of multiplayer and the funding necessary for 3D Realms to complete Duke Nukem Forever PC within 12 months.

3D Realms says that it requested $6 million to "cover the costs to complete both the Xbox 360 and PC versions" of the notoriously long-in-development title, with Take-Two supposedly agreeing to this amount. However, Take-Two lowered the amount of $5 million, and, "at the last minute (on April 22 [2009])" further lowered it to $2.5 million.

We're never going to see it.

Even though we'd all love for it to happen.

All in all, after ten years of "development", I think it's time to let it go.

Too bad. Sounds awesome to me.

And I thought Blizzard had a bad track record for releasing games on time.

Whoa that footage looks mighty tasty. Some good animating there and it looks very un-shiny for something using the Doom 3 engine.

They worked on it till Quake 2 engine got too old, then they worked for it till Doom 3 engine got too old. I don't think it will ever happen because 3DReals are a bunch of lazy bastards.

They said it took so long because they were upgrading and renewing equipment and whatnot. Seriously, that's pathetic.

Wow... that gameplay footage really does look damn good. Too bad we'll never see DNF.
