This is kind of halfway between rumor and confirmed, as EB Games confirms the Fallout 3 Australian release date as October 17th. The rule of thumb is "never trust release dates given out by stores", but EB Games claims to have got this straight from the publisher.
Today is a great day for Australian Fallout fans! After recent news that Fallout 3 had been refused classification by the OFLC, many of us were worried that we wouldn't see one of the biggest game of the year. But fear no more - the OFLC has just awarded Fallout 3 an MA15+ rating for Strong violence, drug references and coarse language.

Not only that, but the new release date of October 17th has now been confirmed by RedAnt, as well as the EB Games exclusive Collector's Edition!
Source of this news is Gamerchip, who note this news isn't confirmed on the Red Ant website but express trust in EB Games. We have contacted Red Ant for confirmation.

EDIT: Briosafreak points to VG247 repeating the oft-repeated 7th of October as a date Bethesda announced as the shipping date at E3.

There has been no press release whatsoever, so this is a rumor, plain and simple... As sated by the title, of course.

isnt october the last month of fall?

and they have been saying fall 2008 for the longest time.

So? You sound like someone working for GameSpot, dude.

I also had independent confirmation that Inon Zur was the composer more than half a year before Bethesda sent out a press release. If I had released that information, would it have been any less true because Bethesda didn't send out a press release? If Red Ant confirms the release date, it is fact, regardless of press releases.

Dude, press releases are just that, press releases. They're for facts that companies want to be public, that doesn't mean they give us all the facts.

So close to another big next-gen RPG Fable 2? If true it can make one of them very sad.

While this still doesn't confirm anything, it kinda strengthens the rumor.

How? 4th-7th is the date that's been given everywhere before, 17th is the new one.

Good point.

Microsoft's "Games for Windows" site lists Fallout 3 to be released on October 7th: http://www.gamesforwindows.com/en-US/Games/Pages/featGames.aspx

Check the end of this post, and Amazon.com.

Oh. So it has been officially announced by beth at E3 that October 7th is the date? So it does strengthen the rumor. A delay for the Australian release kinda seems logical since it's the edited version and all...

I still don't see how it relates to the new date at all. They can start on the modifications right away, so that would only be a factor if we have any reason to believe they can't be done in ~2 months but would instead take ~2.5 months.

Maybe it's their way of punishing them for the rating ;)

But yea, I see your point. Bethsoft work in mysterious ways...

it's two months plus shipping. At least the trade winds are reliable these days!

I can't see many people wasting money on Fo3 when L4D/Fable2 are being released at the same time.

didn't really think that comment through did you.

How so? Beth has alienated Fallout's fanbase (All they've got left are TES fans now), and since gamers tend to be eclectic with their gaming genres of choice; What do you think they're going to be more willing to spend their money on? A+ titles like Fable 2 (RPG) and L4D (Shooter) or a failed homogenization of the two with a pipboy? I can't wait to see a press release blaming piracy for Fo3's shitty sales.

Also: Bad troll is bad.

You mean he should have said "I can't see many people wasting money on Fo3"?

Too true

John: don't backseat moderate.

Fable 2.. sure, but Left 4 Dead.. eh, let's leave zombie games to Capcom. Everyone else seems to suck at it. I checked some of the videos and these zombies don't even act like zombies. I'd much sooner buy Fallout 3 than L4D.
