S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Clear Sky Release Date Announced

Yeah new Stalker

gonna definitely buy it from here 25 € is not bad at all for the one of the best FPSs of the year along with Call of Duty 5 (another one Im going to buy)

Haha, bye bye FINO3, no one could care less, you wrestle in kids (console) class compared to these real games.

Call of Duty 5 is gonna be a real game?!?!?! OMG! I gotta check that one this time. The other iterations were so lame and unimpressive...

really like the first stalker.. very immersive..
even if it was quite short and "maps" weren't that big (quite a disappointment against what the original project should have been).

Yet i would like to know what Clear Sky offers new..
just new maps and new main quests and some graphics improvements?

Looking forward to this entirely too much. Oddly enough, one of the things I'm looking forward to are the improved reloading animations. In newest videos I've seen, they look goddamn delicious. One thing that always slightly irritated me in the original. I'm looking at you, MP-5 reloading animation.

And Cremo, one of the biggest new additions is the factions system. There are 5 major factions IIRC, which dynamically fight over resources and terrain on the expanded maps, and you can work for any of 'em. Some of 'em are mutually exclusive naturally, like Duty and Freedom, but I'm pretty sure there are some that'll play nice together.

Also artifacts are rarer and harder to find, so artifact hunting actually should be trickier. Also updated inventory screen and weapons modification system, every weapon being able to get multiple upgrades, and what upgrades you can get depends on who you're allied with and what resources they have available.

Basically, if you liked the creeping around, collecting loot and doing side quests in the original, Clear Sky is supposed to do that a hell of a lot better. Main quest is apparently roughly equivalent to the original.

I loved the first game. there are very few games that had such great atmosphere and that pulled me in that much.

unfortunately it felt really incomplete, like a lot of content was missing and a lot of small things needed more work. I really hope they've done something about this in the sequel.

either way, I'm sure I'm gonna love playing it. I'm pretty sure it'll be a toss up between Fallout 3 and STALKER 2 which is going to be my favorite single-player game over the following few months.

that video sure is impressive though...

likewise the earlier screens of the game... didn't feel like i was playing the same game when i finally got my hands on it though.

What was the plot ending in stalker?
Can you reveal this without putting out a spoiler to everyone who haven't played it yet?

I'm going to have to look into S.T.A.L.K.E.R, I really didn't think I had a PC that could run it well enough.

what baffles me, is that i can run crysis with all those fancy graphic bling-bling under DX9. what the heck? why isnt that possible with CS? i dont want no vista and all that crap! correct me if i am wrong, but iirc, you need vista for dx10.

these days it's so much about the graphics engine. the crysis enginge is probably the best graphics engine around right now. it can handle a lot and it runs smoothly.

hell, I can play Crysis with maxed settings with a fairly high fps on my computer, but I can't run for example Age of Conan or Neverwinter Nights 2 with fps more than 20-30.

and yes, DX10 is for Vista.

Oh rly ? I run a 2*9800 GT Sli with 3 Go Ram and a E8400. It's not the best rig around but it's certainly not a *bad* one isn't it ? Well, I can handle most games between 50 and 120 fps. The only game that runs rather poorly is Crysis : between 28 and 40 fps on Very High ( and I'm lucky because most people with a 8800 GT can only run it at 20 fps ). Why ? Becaus of some volumetric light and breakable trees ? That's cool but Stalker looks a lot more photorealistic at places and it does not require a war-machine.

@horst : well you can but if you don't tweak the game a little, you officially can't run it on very high and DX9. Volumetric light, very high textures, very high physics etc is limited to DX10/ Which is the same with Stalker. Which means that there probably be an unofficial way to run Clear Sky with DX10 effects on DX9.

well, then your particular video card or maybe the drivers aren't well compatible with the engine. or maybe it's something else with your setup. in general, the crysis engine is a great engine.

Clear Sky looks better though, true.

2*8800GTX/4GB RAM/Q6800 here, running @60+fps in 1280x1024 under DX10 & max settings. The Crysis engine is, comparatively, the fastest I've ever seen.

Amusingly, Crysis on max settings runs faster than the original STALKER.

Speaking of performance, someone at RPS mentioned Clear Skies will allow people to run most of the DX0 features under DX9. While that's probably reassuring to a lot of people, I suspect it will cause a massive performance hit. Really, if you want DX10-like shit, just download a cracked copy of Windows CE-ME-NT (aka Vista) & install the shit on partition. Only problem is it wants to be installed first, but reinstalling your OS seems like a fairly small price to pay for what's likely a 30% or better performance increase.

do games work better in Vista these days?
There's no accurate answer to that question.

DX9 games (or earlier) mostly won't, but it depends a bit on your hardware. If Vista itself runs better on your machine than other OSes, the games might also.

DX10 games and games with pseudo DX10 features run better under Vista, because your hardware has to perform fewer tasks to produce the same. A single DX10 shader, for example, might be 3 DX9 shaders. If each shader costs you 3-5fps, it may be the difference between a slideshow and smooth shooting.
