I must say, that Tarkovsky has big talent, but as I say, I don't think that he was greatest director of USSR, but one of greatest, yeah, but I'm don't big fan of his films, include "Solaris" for example.

I thought the consensus greatest would be Eisenstein becuase of his impact on the history of cinema?

Either way, if it's not Tarkovsky, then who?

Who was that guy that made "A Dog's Heart" ?

Vladimir Bortko?

Sobachye serdtse is a damned good movie. Great book, too. Bortko hardly has a long and distinguished career, though.

Is Nikita Mikhalkov a candidate?

By the way, how do you feel about Oleg Menshikov.

Sobachye serdtse is one of my favourites. It's brilliant.
Mikhalkov's last film is a crappy remake. Not to mention his fan movie about Putin.

Menshikov: as an actor in Mikhalkov's movie or in general?

btw, maybe we should do a separate thread about Russian movies then?

lol. I didn't see either his last film or his fan movie, I must admit.

And yes, Dog's Heart was something else.

As an actor, in general.

I love him, he's my favourite actor after Bob Hoskins and Daniel-Day Lewis. Such verve, such variation, great actor. Wonder how you guys feel about him.

Meh, it's not like anyone else is using this thread. If need be I'll just split it.

He's a very good actor, one of the best Russian actors today. Can't say I like all of his last works, but most are very good. I really love one of his first works in 'Pokrovskie vorota' (Pokrovsky Gates). It's a damn good movie and Menshikov's act is very good.

Did you watch it in Russian?

Vladimir Bortko? Yeah, Dog's Heart was good movie. Master & Margarita - terrible, believe me. He's future Taras Bul'ba - the same situation. But his Idiot was great (if you like Dostoevsky, must see with Crime and Punishment - can give you a link, if you need).
Mihalkov - yes. Not his last two films (12 and Sibirsky Cirul'nik), but he has talent and big talent.
He's a very good actor, one of the best Russian actors today.
Men'shikov? He's not best, not one of the best 20. For me - not best at all. For me, Bodrov much better as artist.
Mashkov - yes. Mironov - yes. Suhanov - yes. Suhorukov - yes. Makoveckiy - yes, etc.
Either way, if it's not Tarkovsky, then who?
There's many candidates - Eisenstein, Elem Klimov, Mihail Shveicer, German (not nation), Georgiy Daneliya, Armenian & Georgian directors (if you ask about СССР, not РСФСР). But I don't think that Tarkovsky first at all.
I thought the consensus greatest would be Eisenstein becuase of his impact on the history of cinema?
Yes, for history he's just like a Stanislavsky.

But all that I say - only my opinion, IMO.

P.S.
maybe we should do a separate thread about Russian movies then?
Maybe we need RuNMA forum :lalala:
