S.T.A.L.K.E.R. stole assets from other games?

A clue as to how it went from vapourware to release?
(...) evidence that GSC Game World's recently released shooter S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Shadow of Chernobyl makes use of a number of graphical assets taken directly from commercially released games such as Valve's Half-Life 2 and id Software's Doom 3. Many forum posters are speculating that the assets were used without authorization.
Link: Half-Life 2, Doom 3 Assets in S.T.A.L.K.E.R.? on ShackNews

Thanks Specialist.

seems quite something typical for eastern europeean practices ...

from reading it does look mighty suspicious so i'm betting on a combination of the following :

- used quake 3 and doom 3 assests without consent or just copied them as from the pictures i saw they dont seem to be perfectly identical - or used the games as guidelines for building the maps for the textures

- used a royalty free texture pack that was also used by valve or id (quite improbable in the case of id which has been "making its own" for as long as i can remember)

i dont know think much will happen to GSC even if things get ugly .. company gets shut down .. theyre probably a limmited liability company so their assets (probably next to nothing) get auctioned off ... again the countrys laws of GSC will probably have workarounds

THQ is not extremely liable tho they could get some flak

id might not look to sue

but Valve might...

all in all i personally think they stole but theyll get away with it.

happy easter infidels ;) !

ROFL
I'm not really surprised, but it's not my problem.
Maybe there will be some work for the law attorneys.
...and game industry is complaining about software piracy

I don't really blame them for stealing it, they were under tremendous pressure. Hopefully they just get off with a slap on the wrist.

Stole asses from other games? What?

On a serious note: of all the things that can keep a game from completion, would textures really be the most cumbersome one?

Gues well see how its turns out but it woud really be a shame if the company woud be forced to close. Love stalker too much and hope to see some quality products from them yet.

There is also the question of if the textures are actually used in the game, or are placeholders that never were removed. S.T.A.L.K.E.R. used Counter Strike weapon sounds as placeholders, and replaced them before before release.

If they are used in the game, my guess is that it is accidental. Placeholders that were forgotten about and used as assets. Perhaps in the rush and confusion when they had to updated the engine for DirectX 9.

I really doubt the company would be forced to closed. At worse, they may have some problems with future North American releases.

im going to assume that they were just using them during development as placeholders, and simply forgot. out of the hundreds or thousands of textures, its not hard to believe they might have just missed them. :/

i just don't think we know enough to really judge on the matter.

No wonder the underground tunnel seemed so familiar.. It had an air of Doom 3 about it, especially the barrels and such. :?

edit: Screencrap to elaborate point:

Holy jim-cricket-batting fuck, that's one pretty screenshot, much better than the others I've seen.

What kind of hardware was it taken under?
*hopes his Core 2 Duo, 2GB DDR2 and GeForce 7600 will be good enough for that kind of prettiness*

Eh. I honestly hope nothing bad will come out of it for the guys behind Stalker, even if some textures were used without permission... like a few pixels here and there would make a diff. :/

/me shakes his wiggler

*all signs indicate to no law-suits*

Whew.

Apparently, S.T.A.L.K.E.R. looks great if you have a system hearty enough to support it (made worse because I don't believe the game has been optimized all that well). Problem being that many people are unable to support the DirectX 9 shaders, or have to sacrifice other graphical settings for them. I believe it is only a tiny minority who can play S.T.A.L.K.E.R. with full settings.

A few screenshots I saw earlier, from another gamer, showing S.T.A.L.K.E.R. nearly at its best. Campfire, trailer, and abandoned house.

Things are quiet now, but I suspect that is because it is the weekend. I believe we will hear more about this tomorrow, as the companies involved start the workweek.

I suppose the biggest clue will be whether the next statement comes from one of the studios involved or their lawyers.

Aye, that was more my own expectation. I cant really see big companies like Id and Valve pull out a case against a relatively small company like that because of a few textures... but hell, business is business, so like was said, let's hang tight for more info.

If they don't sue GSC into the ground, then the next thing you know people will be stealing bits of interface, then sprites, then they'll copy entire sections of manual at a time, and then the terrorists will already have won.
