Settlement system causing RAGE

I was surprised to still get 'new settlements' quests a considerable time after finishing the main quest. Still, every spot is useless.
Plant mutfruits, build a generator, craft a sentry gun or two then wait for it to fill up with BORING settlers with no names.
At first I was eager to build continuously and after some hours I built some okay settlements usually with a large farm/waterpump/great defense/20+ people just to watch them stare at each other in the market I built...
The whole game is freaking empty. I guess the developers excused themselves of filling the world with multiple believable settlements since the game throws you 20 (or whatever) settlements to build and populate the world with.

By the way, if you guys don't care much about building a village that looks 'defended', you can skip building countless walls etc like I did. Made it to level 41 and the number of attacks had been lower than the number of settlements lol. (And those attacks were 4 raiders or 3 supermutants or a deathclaw.)

Side note: Is there any other advantage to supply chains other than workshop materials?
I've noticed no change in happiness to settlements who are not self sufficient after linking them with the other ones.

Edit: I hope mods or DLCs will make everything better.
A lot of wasted potential in this settlement system...

I really don't like the settlement building for reasons mentioned in this topic so far, but also because the construction interface is very ungainly.
I much rather wished if Bethesda had insisted on this mechanic that we could do it from a map/outside perspective than from the player's point of view.

And what was mentioned here, it doesn't lead to anything. Would it for example resulted in a new ending in which the player unites the Commonwealth and established a network of settlements that in time form their own government and civilization the effort put into the building of these settlements would have felt rewarding.
It is just there now.

I felt at some point that the game will require me to get a certain number of settlements to a certain level in order to proceed with the ending, something like "gathering the people" to support the faction you sided with. Nothing happened, not even ending slides for the other locations.

lmao now some shithead is leaning against a wall I want to put stuff on and I cant tell her to move

To bad there's a height limit. I really wanted to built a fort completely engulfing the giant tree in Sanctuary.

this is what I have to do for an hour to make a simple line of blocks :)

I wish you could clip objects into each other, the building materials look like shit anyways.

On PC just bring up the console and type in tcl. Then any objects you place won't have clipping(but when you place a object it has to be clear) till you get out of workshop mode. Plus tcl lets you flying and that help placing stuff.

does anyone know if you can lock chests or doors, stupid npcs keep going into my room and stealing shit/sleeping in my bed and in the armory they go into my damn power armors
