Shadowrun Returns released

WorstUsernameEver

But best title ever!
Tangential to our interests and therefore worth at the very least this post: Shadowrun Returns, Harebrained Schemes' turn-based RPG based on Shadowrun and funded by a successful Kickstarter campaign, has been released. You can find it on Steam for €13.99/€18.99*/$19.99/£13.99, on GamersGate, and, if you were a backer, DRM-free from Harebrained Schemes' website.

I'm halfway through the campaign at the moment.

Go buy it. Now.

Combats are better than in the last XCOM, but this game clearly is not about combat. It's about investigating the slums with a great ambiance and an exquisite DA. There are too few combats, most of the game is about running around and speaking to NPCs. And it's awesome.

Been on it since it unlocked, seven hours ago. I'm done for the night. I thought I'd finish the campaign tonight though, as it was said to be very short. But I'm not done yet. Good point.

Two precious advice for newcomers:
- The game is ridiculously easy... And I'm in hardcorest++ mode. So tone up the difficulty a bit when you start a new campaign.
- Enable "double click" in the options, it will save your life multiple times. And even with it, I still sometimes go where I didn't want to, for example.

I'm with Izual here. Good game. Combat is fun and the writing is top notch.

Can't wait to fire up and learn more about that bad boy of an editor. :)

I don't even like Shadowrun, it's like all the rpg-elements thrown together like garbage in a pile, but totally agree, it's a great rpg-game. I will also buy it as soon as I can.

Yeah I'm eager to test the editor too :)

One important thing is that when I play it I really feel like I'm in a pen&paper RPG simulator. Sometimes, it's as if there was a GM there telling me "You arrive in a place..." and describing it.
The scenario of the main campaign also has a pen&paper feeling, I can't really explain it.

Thank you so much for posting this. I remember playing Shadowrun for snes and getting sucked in by the games atmosphere.

Is this a stand alone or continuation of the previous story arc?

Standalone. There are, however, references to the Shadowrun SNES and Genesis games. If possible, I think you shouldn't look around to find out what they are, it's really easy to spoil yourself the surprise.

Yeah, pre-ordered it but didn't back the kickstarter.

Looking forward to it, but likely no time to really get into it this weekend.

That's it, finished the campaign, 13 hours. Died 5 times, in maximum difficulty setting - it was honestly easy, that sucks.

Anyway, the game is great, but the end of the campaign, character-wise, it ridiculous. You spend the whole game improving your character, even at the very end, and then the game basically says "so long, and thanks for all the fish", back to main title and that's it. What?

I've been dying a lot in the [spoiler:4f1dfb9f7f]coyote rescue mission[/spoiler:4f1dfb9f7f] but I think it's due to me being a Decker in Very Hard mode and that not being a very good build for that area or something. I'm still confident I'll get through it though. :P

My Shadowrun GM never explained the places we arrived at. One more reason it was a sorta crap campaign.

From the very beginning, it's obvious that this game has oodles of soul. A beautifully crafted atmosphere, just like Fallout has, though obviously different. I'm not even going to play beyond the apartment until I've had a good night's sleep, this is something that clearly deserves my full, unmuddled attention. It feels so good to have a new lovingly made 2D isometric RPG.

I was really torn to suggest this game be covered in the news earlier this year. i backed it. I'm not sure sure about the saving system, my brother confirmed the check point system is annoying.

The save system is annoying because you have to wait to trigger an autosave before you leave the game. But honestly, it's not that bad and nobody complained when Assassin's Creed used that system on PC either.

Deckers are... Hard and not really efficient, based on my own experience. But you should be able to beat the campaign nonetheless, yeah :)

I've just started a dwarf mage & found that the damage output is very low compared to your companions at the start. I tend to do 6 dmg standard & often get 3 dmg from weak attacks, with both my bolts & my pistol. Whereas my buddies did 10 dmg standard & often did crits.
I figured a mage would be a support nuker, but it looks more like gimped healer for now.

Might be wrong since I've only just bought new spells but haven't been able to use them yet.

So far, I like it, although I hate the idea of checkpoint saves (haven't had to use them yet) and the game feels very linear for now (you get plenty of minor choices on how to resolve things, but overall you are being railroaded).

You'll get better later, trust me.
Once you get AOE spells and damage-over-time spells you can do devastating attacks.

I didn't back this one on Kickstarter, but I'll probably buy it soon. Never having played Shadowrun, I wasn't sure about a few things, but people seem to be enjoying it, so it seems worth buying.
