Smoking

Well, I wouldn't go that far. Candy manufacturer's don't spike their product with addictive chemcials with the intention of hooking their customers into habitually consuming a product that serves no other purpose than to satisfy the artificial need it itself created.
You're saying that's the same as a Jujubees?
But candy is still non essential for you, and thus a waste of money and serves no other purpose than to satisfy the consumers artificial needs. And sugar is, believe it or not, highly addictive.

Hunger isn't an artificial need.

I look out my window, I see squirrels eating.
Ain't no squirrels smoking Pall Malls.

Sugar converts to energy, which is essential to the human body. Sugar isnt actually addictive on itself, but humans instinctually look for highly-concentrated energy sources...therefore kids will eat sugary things inorder to "grow" faster, even if they dont really need them.
i wouldnt call it automatically "unnecessary" unless you have figured out a way to make human body work without
food->energy conversion.
Sugars scientifically thinking are actually found in human plasma (Glucose), so i wouldnt call sugars useless.

You really cant compare sugar to tobacco. Sugar will damage your teeth if consumed regularly in large doces. Tobacco products will likely cause you deadly cancer and addiction if used regularly.
I would pick sugar any day.

Link between Diabetes/obesity and Sugar consumpsion hasnt been proven, it doesnt cause it directly. Just eating sugar doesnt cut it. Now obviously if you eat INSANE amounts of sugar your blood sugar levels go haywire and it causes problems with metabolism. Diabetics need to avoid sugar as their bodies dont produce enough or proper insulin.

It simply is that sugar is too efficient energy source. Too much energy converts to fat. Too much fat increases weight. Increased weight leads to diabetes. Almost any food causes that if consumed "sufficiently". You can consume ( reasonable amounts) sugar if you simply exersice more. If you do that, it doesnt cause cancer, diabetes or obesity. Teeth damage can also be mostly negated with regular brushing, partly negated with twigs if you dont have anything better to use.

You cant negate tobbaco products issues that easily can you.

Most retarded sentence ever. I assume you eat candy? Same thing, waste of money, by your definition. I smoke the occasional cigar for the taste, and for the enjoyment of it, the same way you go waste bullets on the firing range.
i don't buy candy. i eat it when given, but otherwise not really.

and the difference is that my other enjoyments don't hurt anyone. ;)

but my statement was obviously to blow it out of propotion, smartypants. chill out...

Smoking sure was fun when I was 13. Never really smoked much past that. The most I would smoke in the future would be maybe a Cigar on very rare occasions.

Dead inside already.
Must be the years of rollups. Golden Virginia.

I am currently smoking a roll-up cig :) made from GV no less. Smoking maybe evil, but as long as you smoke for pleasure and not out of habit it's all good (apart from causing cancer, which my grandad died from).

My problem is not addiction, it is liking the damn things so much. When I was a kid, they should not have told me "smoking is addictive and evil", they should have said "smoking is very pleasurable, and you may not want to quit once you get started"; I may not have started then. When my dad said "once a smoker always a smoker" and the schools said people are weak and get addicted I took it as a challenge :P. When I was travelling India, I gave up cold Turkey for 2.5 months, and I did not even think about them because I was so happy.

I need to start running again, then my tired and sick lungs override my want to smoke. Right now I am smoking, drinking, and writing some awesome stuff for MR :P

Dude, most addictions are pleasurable, that's why they're addictive.

Not so sure with nicotine - read years ago that even nematodes get addicted to it. Do worms feel pleasure?

Mmmm...worms.

For the first 3 years I smoked it was easy to stop anytime. No jitters at all. After that it got so difficult one girlfriend made me start again I scratched so many records.

Yeah but you are never "sold" anti-smoking material that way. It's always about lack of self determination and free will. Damn you Ms Griphiffs, if you told me smoking was awesome but bad for you, I probably would never have started. The only time I have a problem is when I am working as a cog in the machine, and looking for any excuse to escape.

mmm nicotine and worms slivering in my mouth, mmm. I am thinking of getting one of those E-Cigarette things now.

I have to go have a fag now. My boss just asked me about the TP reports memo.

Non-smoker. My lungs are made of whipped cream, and even a light haze of second-hand smoke sends me into coughing spasms. Besides that, it's pretty disgusting. To each their own, though.

Easiest and weakest joke ever, and yet, you went for it...

I'm a roller. American Spirits when I can get it, otherwise Drum. Sometimes I'll roll in a filter too. I gotta wonder what sort of offgassing a normal filter has while being exposed to the heat in a conventional ciggy.
