So, how many of you hate Fallout 3 without playing it?

Not a big deal really, we've been here since the beginning, I doubt the twitch players will have the same level of loyalty to a subpar shooter.

Well said, majority of these type of gamers have little to no interest in the story, heart, soul, call it whatever you want, of the Fallout universe and will move on to other shooters after finishing F3.

If by patches you mean unofficial fan patches, maybe. How many patches did Oblivion get? One?

Pretty much, yes. And, as you know, the unofficial fan patches fix more than a thousand additional bugs.

In IRC last night, a friend told me he played Oblivion with just the official patch, but had to use the console to "cheat" around quite a few script bugs in order to finish bugged quests, etc.

So, I would have to conclude that, no, Bethesda does not waste any love on a product once it passes its sales peak. Based on past performance, we can assume they will fix the worst crash-and-burn bugs with a beta patch "pretty soon", and eventually declare it a "release" patch, after which they will wash their hands of the product.

This discussion has got me playing with Oblivion, and one thing that does strike me about it is how many things seem to be influenced by Fallout... tag skills, talking heads... I mean the whole genre was influenced by it to some degree. So maybe the "Obliv with Guns" thing isn't just designer laziness, but maybe they were going for (what they perceive as) a Fallout feel in (some aspects of) Oblivion the first place. Did I mention that I digress?

The first hour was pretty impressive. Once you go out into the wasteland, it's all downhill. The voice acting is inconsistent, from excellent to atrocious. Liam Neeson does a great job. I really felt an emotional resonance with his character. However, I found most of the characters to be just plain goofy.

I actually like the outdoor environments, however I have a problem with Bethseda's landscaping, as they have a tendency to create these ridiculously steep hills that look like they're from "Ice Age".

The combat just plain sucks, even for FPS standard. The AI is atrocious. The character animations make me want to cry.

Fallout 3 should not be considered canon and is a disgrace to the original series. As a stand alone game, Fallout 3 is mediocre at best.

I absolutely loved fallout 1 and 2 and I picked up fallout 3. I had my reservations but I figured I would make an informed opinion based on my experiences with the game itself.

I am glad I played it. They absolutely nailed the environment. It actually feels like you're in a wasteland. I actually love what they did with the combat.

Sure you can try playing it like your average shooter out there but you are doing yourself a disservice. If you go out shooting wildly without using the VATS system you seem to waste alot of ammo and deal less damage.

I hope some of the people who are hiding away in their dungeons screaming at anything different really poke their heads out and check this out, give it an honest shot and you'll be glad you did.

in the first area as you're walking out of the vault I see the steep hills people are complaining about but as you move about some you start seeing less and less of that. If you talk to Manya in Megaton she actually comments on it talking about how much of their town was built from debris from 'flying busses' that fell out of the sky.

When you're in the city parts it actually feels like a city. The proportions seem like they are correct. How many huge cities did you crawl through in Fallout 1 and 2. Even the cities that did exist were very small and you only had a block or two.
when you're in springvale it doesn't feel cramped at all. You're wandering through a small town.

Of course the vault felt cramped. I get the feeling you were supposed to feel cramped though. Theres even quite a few dialog options about it.

I'm making myself almost physcially ill over debating if I want to even try the game. To me, Fallout & Fallout 2 were just the epitome of RPGs to me. I'm filled with rage and sadness as I read a reviewer praising the game admit he's never played the other two. He continues on to mention how he called Bethesada to find out if it was a bug that he didn't encounter Dogmeat on his first excursions. Even though I had never signed up for an account before it's always comforting to know NMA has always been here. At least here I can read honest opinions of people who know what a good game is supposed to be.
