Spore

I have more faith in Will Wright than Peter Molyneux.

Though of course this sounds too good to be true, which almost always means it will fall far short. Still, I'm cautiously hopeful about Spore.

By the way, pictures (and some small amount of exposition).

That's some fucking serious shit.
If this looks like anything, it looks like a groundbreaking game.
But what will the system requirements be?
One can only wonder.

It's still a damned original game, although I'll go with the 'I'll believe it when I see it' approach, since I recall that Black and White was quite revolutionary, but not what people expected it to be: too much micromanagement.

Oh, and merging this to the old Spore topic.

I wouldn't call it a game. A 'life simulato' will be proper.
Thought it seems to be the child of populous+civilization+tamagouchi... Still... a rare special game IMO. 8)

I am looking forward to this game obviously because of its originality. Creating a creature from a tiny little microscopic critter to a space-traveling people who can basically play god with other planets sounds like a lot of fun.

I've already imagined a possible plot twist. As your spores evolve into a space-faring civilization, they encounter a peculiar planet not much different from theirs. From translated ancient, crude, but yet, effective "radio" transmissions, these beings call it "Earth."

*DUN DUN DUUUNNN!*

*goodies* Can't wait. :)

I don't think you're understanding what this game is about. It doesn't have a plot or story, the whole point of this game is to have everything be different on every play through, this is done through randomly (Wright calls it procedurally) generating a lot of content, and downloading the rest from other PCs. Putting in a silly easter-egg like that won't work because of that.

So you just evolve your species into a new one... then end the game and start over? While it sounds cool, I have a strong feeling this game will end up like The Sims when I first read its previews. Really cool on paper but after about a half hour, I grow bored and never play again.

based on what i saw..

it starts off like astroids
goes to like underwater descent
goes to like populus/civ
goes to like a space-based rts

Are you sure it will do all that out of the box :). I bet it will do all that after you buy the 15 expansion packs but until then, you're just stuck with a tamagotchi.

Idk, it looks cool but i'll continue to doubt... and then buy it upon release.

Here's what I found out:

"originally it was a techdemo @ GDC 2005, simulating the code "verbs" and the self animations, ie a tutorial for smarter coding of video games, as opposed to precoding every possibility, to make a more creative experience people really liked it though and go him to develop it as a game."

Sorry to bring up an old thread, but Gamespot has a report on Will Wright giving a speech at the GDC titled: "Why I Get Obsessed with My Game Design Research." He talks mostly about inspiration for his games, mainly Spore. Pretty interesting stuff.

Linkage.
