I agree, it's the scripts that kill the film.
In a sense I think this is a problem of commercializing. Remember, Lucas made most of his money off the first films not on the films themselves but in the film related merchandise- the tee-shirts but most of all the toys. When Star Wars :The new Hope showed that he could make a killing in star wars related toys, he began to think of ways he could market.
So Star Wars became a marketing gimmick. It's not as successful now because so many other people have done it. But Lucas was the first and I think it went to his head. THat's why the films seem that they are made for the intellect of a 10 year old. Becuase it's the 10 year old that is the target audience.
