Strategy games (recommend me some if you please)

Sonny, I Watched the Vault Bein' Built!
I haven't played a lot of strategy games on PC, except for the classics such as Civilization, Settlers, C&C/Red Alert, War/StarCraft, Disciples and Heroes of Might & Magic. and a few other odd ones. the HoMM series in particular has offered a lot of entertainment, especially when playing against friends. but I grow weary. and I'm looking for something new, something I haven't played yet. it's not like any of the above series change a whole lot with their sequels - if you're tired of the basic concept, none of them feel too appealing.

in whole, I really like the concept of HoMM (and the very much alike Disciples), but the fights are a really weak point that I just can't stand for more than a few hours. but the gathering of resources, building, exploration and levelling up of a hero are all great and fun. and I like the whole board game feeling you get from them (I'm a big fan of board games). so I'm looking for something in that vein, but that still might offer something new. actually, all suggestions are welcome. but that's what I tend to enjoy at least. thanks in advance.

Total War series. Real-time battles with thousands of units at a time, with a turn-based control over everything else. No real plot, just one simple goal: conquer the world. Awesome :D

Alpha Centauri, it's a spin off of Civilization but it's still amazing, if not better.

Spellcross, turn based tactical combat with modern day military troops against an interdimensional demon army. I think, it's kinda weird but at least original. :V

Strategy game? Here you go:

Warhammer 40,000 is a tabletop miniature wargame produced by Games Workshop, set in a dystopian science fantasy universe. The Warhammer 40,000 setting is used for several tabletop games, video games, and works of fiction, including licensed works published by Black Library, a subsidiary of Games Workshop.

Some videos for your appreciation (believe me, the game delivers everything in them - but in game format, of course. The CGIs are not just false propaganda):

This one is not from the game, but from the Ultramarines movie (one of the best scenes, imo: psycho-sonic attack!). Pretty decent CGI movie, worth watching even if the picture quality isn't awesome.

I put it here to give a feel of the setting. For fans, it was a no-brainer, must watch movie:

Total Annihilation is a great RTS. If I remember correctly it was greatly overlooked because of Starcraft. However, I believe it to be a much superior game with its universe, and massive amounts of units.

If you've played Supreme Commander before you have a good idea how TA works. Still, TA is a much better game, very well balanced despite just how massive it is. Oh and the community has work wonders with the game even providing a full 3D mod for you to play with.

http://www.gog.com/en/gamecard/total_anihilation_commander_pack And it's cheap too!

Do you like space? Get Sword Of the Stars (and it's expansions). The complete collection (it + all three expansions) Is on steam/your digital distributor of choice. Its basically homeworld meets alpha centauri, but totally awful and totally awesome. Like any 4X you can spend six hours playing a game and not finish, but it's just really fun.

It has six different races that are radically different in playstyle, FTL drives, predisposition to techs, and appearance, two of which were drawn from the games lore and random encounters, and brought in with the expansion packs, along with a whole boatload of new techs and updates to the game in general; vanilla SOTS is nothing compared to SOTS + expansions.

In short, you have turn based, strategic turns, and real-time tactical turns, which are about empire management, fleet building, research, etc, and blowing shit up, respectively. It's got a fun little feature where tech trees are generated randomly for each game, with each race having their own chances to get certain techs.

get this game and play it becuase it rules

For the record, Starcraft, Command & Conquer etc. are all tactical games, not strategy games. Trust me. I've argued this a while ago.

If you really want a proper strategy game, grab Master of Orion II of GOG.

If you like 4X strategies I believe you should check Galactic Civilizations II with all addons. Maybe you can't use your units in fights, but strategic aspect of this game is amazing. I love Swords of the Stars as well!

Also, you should check Star Wars: Empire At War - nice strategy game with campaign map, with battles on land and more spectacular - in space. I loved the game, especially with addon and few mods. Very fun.

And one more: Men of War. You should definitely check it. Slight different from other strategies, but in most cases you must use your brain. Levels are amazing and I heard it's one of the greatest multiplayer experiences ever. Can't really say, because it gets choppy for some reason on my computer ;_;

And Total Wars. One of my favs <3

Adding to these already mentioned, if you are a fan of HoMM, try WoG 3.58f unofficial expansion, it brings A LOT new features to HoMM3 making it by far the best in the series.
Also King's Bounty, it lacks building elements of HoMM but (turn based) battles are much more tactical and it can be really challenging on impossible difficulty, trait which rarely appears in modern games.

I see where your coming from I believe. Because you control individual units in small skirmishes?

Does that make Total War a strategy game?

I think you should try Age of wonders. The combat is a bit more involved than in Disciples. You've still got towns and characters to develop.

Other than that...

Surprised no one mentioned this :P

Master of magic is fantasy Civ. Give it a try. Fun to try and break the game and come up with yet another overpowered combo.

Kohan is pretty good and and base/unit management/building system is a bit different than the standard RTS.

Oh and play Dune II! Can't beat the fluff of the Dune universe.

That was so weird I couldn't really get into it.

Have you tried King's Bounty? Granted, it's more combat-focused...

Company of heroes is one of my favourites. You should check it out unless you really hate WW2 themed games for some reason.

The gameplay is excellent, the visuals still look good and the audio / voice acting are both very good.

The game is still being played online if you are into that sort of thing.

You can get Company of heroes and the stand alone expansion Opposing fronts for about 15 € on Steam.

Wasn't Kings' Bounty older than HOMM?

I know it isn't like board games, but I'd definitely recommend you Stronghold and Stronghold Crusader.

Wasn't Kings' Bounty older than HOMM?

The original was I think (not completely sure), but I was talking about the recent Russian remakes, so there's probably some degree of mutual borrowing.

I recommend the Total War series, especially Medieval 2 Total War. If you go M2TW, make sure to get Kingdoms too. Vanilla is alright, but some of the mods add a lot to the game (A much more challenging AI, role-playing mechanics, more micro-management, factions, etc.). My personal recommendation would be Deus Lo Vult.
