Tactical squad-based games

Are there any good games like Fallout tactics out there, except Silent storm? I started out with JA, but the graphics were a tad boring.

I know I talk about it in everythread here, but my favorite was the entire Close Combat series.

I guess you tried it already, but since you didn't mention try the first x-com (known as UFO:enemy unknown), i think it's on house of the underdogs

Tried Jagged Alliance 2? It's the best tactical combat game I've ever played.

commandos 1 and 2 are both great games and i bet you can find them in the bargain bin. Haven't played 3 yet but i bet it will be cool.

Yeah, but it's not very user-friendly. I want something simpler. Also, I really can't stand the graphics.

If you feel like going to the trouble of getting X-COM Apocalypse to work under Windows XP, its a terrific game.

Can someone tell me what's the difference between JA and JA2? I only played the first, but people keep praising the second.

Well, very basically, the first one is shit, the second one is great. Check out the rest for yourself at the plac Jebus linked, it's a site devoted to JA.

Look for Commandos 2 like [PCE]el_Prez said. It's the best one in the series, but mind you: it's friggin' difficult.

Same problem with JA2: bwah graphics bwah!

Well, colour me stupid for not going there in the first place.

I liked JA though.. :look:

The problem with these games, along with Commandos, is the realtime combat. It doesn't leave much time to think, does it? (at least BG and IWD allows you to pause the action). I'd like something more along the lines of Fallout tactics. It's a shame the game industry hasn't really explored that genre yet. Too intelligent, I suppose.

I always tought of the commandos games more as puzzles than tactical combat games... Remind me of "the incredible machine", you have limited number of resources on each stage (bullets, bombs, etc) and have to use those to accomplish some goal, wich can usually be achieved only through a few different paths (unless you're exploiting the system). Never played the third too, but i heard it wasn't very good (seems like they ignored their fanbase's opinions when making the game

I really liked the first 2 X-COMs but hated the third one, it seems that it's a love-it or hate-it game...

I liked the first and the third, but I thought "Terror From the Deep" was derivative and not well thought-through. I mean, come on, throwing grenades underwater?

That's nonsense. Have you even played Commandos? If you have, you should have noticed the game doesn't have much combat to begin with. Any "combat" usually means you'll be reloading the game. Commandos focuses almost solely on tactics and meticulous planning, and all killing usually lasts about one second and consists of the green berret sneaking up on a guard and putting a knife under his throat. Turn based gameplay would be completely redundant, since the game is very slow-paced and entirely stealth-oriented as it is. Drawing any parallels between Commandos and BG/IWD is an incredibly ignorant thing to do, since the former is a masterpiece of tactical gameplay, while the latter are little more than chaotic hackfests.

So cut the crap, grab a copy of Commandos and request a couple of weeks off.

True Ratty, but whilst playing Commandos 2 I found myself using Fins (the diver) much more than the Green Beret. Give Fins two knives and he becomes a knife-throwing mass murderer.

One of the best games I ever played.

I actually have the first Commandos game, and I didn't really like it. It was frustrating and you ended up not using most of the guys on your team. Oh well, maybe I'll reinstall it, if I can find the damned thing.

I'm on vacation for another month, so I'd really like a good game to play now that I'm stuck in Ground control. They don't make that too often anymore, you know. Good games.
