Russian developer Targem has announced development of a post-apoc action driving game - ExMachina. They describe it as an "RPG on wheels". Details from the official site:
We are proud to announce ExMachina - a third person action-driving, set up in post apocalyptic world. You will drive through the regions of the new Earth, where you will uncover secrets of the lost civilization, learn the fate of the mankind, gain powerful friends and fight numerous enemies.
Your hard truck is your only hope of survival in the hostile world. You will need it to travel, to earn money and to fight your way through the dangerous areas. It’s crucial that you upgrade your truck every time you have a chance and equip it with ever more powerful weapon and new gadgets. To be able to do that you’ll need to trade with towns and villages on your way, and carry out various tasks.
The action and the RPG part are closely interrelated in the game, the action part being the driving, the spectacular combats with other trucks, a multitude of weapons, realistic physics and special effects; the RPG part being the variety of truck types to choose from, a unique world, a great number of optional quests and a flexible plot. Expect the game in Q4 2005.

Features of the game

The player will have 5 trucks to choose from, with various stats and a great number of upgrades and improvements.

The player can change the cab and the body of the truck, equip it with various gadgets to improve the truck stats.

Over 30 types of weapon: guns, machine guns, missiles, mines, energy weapon.

A great number of enemies: hard trucks, war transports, robots, infantry, bosses

Realistic driving and combat physics.

Spectacular truck damage and destruction by various types of weapon with stunning special effects. Detailed damage model.

Elite-type trading system: trucks being the combat units and cargo transport.
Spotted on RPGDot

Replace truck with any other noun and you'd have the same thing. What's with using vehicles and games these days? How terribly unrealistic, uninspired and pack mentality. A product of market research and group-think if I've ever seen one. :seriouslyno:

And someone should license the terms RTS, RPG, MMORPG, etc and enforce whether a game can use them based on their adherence to a set of criteria.

Why couldn't they come up with something original like I don't know, a superheated then flash cooled terrain where huge vistas are flat, providing incentive to make sail-vehicles that move rapidly across, fighting for the few remaining specks of arable land? True, its cheesy, but at least unique.

OMG I've got an RPG in my mobile! It's called Vrally2 and one can choose different cars! And I can even skip a track and move to the next one!1!!

Wow! Thats sounds a bit like a game i had in mind, except in my head the truck is train, and there would be scout cars/planes/boats guarding it. basically, it would work a bit like hostile waters, or Project Nomads, but the train would be fully upgradeable along with the other vehicles. But i digress, that game sounds alright and i would probably buy it.

Not to go against the flow and potential destroy what little cred I have, being a newbie here and all, but it almost sounds like a modern remake of Autoduel (based on Steve Jackson's Car Wars). Autoduel was not only the first post-apocalyptic game I played, but was also one I enjoyed very much as a kid (Apple IIc). So in that respect, it has me interested. However, with little more than a paragraph about the game, it's pretty much impossible to know whether it's heading in a positive direction or not. Time will tell.

No you are pretty much dead on dude. I also remember playing one called ... PowerSlide or something... It was lame... like these... Come on the best car game with a story to it has to be the origonal Mega Race. YES! lol

I used to play AutoDuel, and Car Wars PnP game, and I would love to see someone make a game that was based on that. Not just making another Twisted Metal clone, and adding very few RPG elements and expecting it to be great.

So, as far as this game is concerned. Meh.

Bwahaha!
That had me laughing in a "Thigh-Slapping kind of way. Damn, I knew there was a reason why I missed you Kharn.

Anyway, aside from inordinately funny, incredibly succinct comments (yes, I am slightly drunk), this game seems like one of the recent crop trying to cash into the "RPG market" via the spurious "feature" that you can change your shirt/haircut/truck/weapon/perfume at some point during the game.
Not that I'm really an RPG purist, I tend to judge a game on how fun and/or engaging it is rather than the specified genre, it just seems like PRG is the new "Ch-Ching" genre for devs.

Sums up my view on the matter nicely. Thanks Dove. ;)

I too remember Autoduel, although i played it on the C64, not the AppleIIc. Pretty much the same game though. I also remember a game called Roadwar 2000 and its sequel called Roadwar Europa (or was it vice versa? i can't remember). Though they were pretty fun, i wouldn't call them RPGs. I would say Roadwar was more RPG then Autoduel though. You got to control an entire gang of people and went about cities searching for more vehicles, or members to join your gang, or feul and weapons and such. If i remember the game right, when you got into a fight with another gang it was a turn based strategy style of combat.

To the point though, such a game can be entertaining if done well, but that still doesn't make it an RPG!

I think you hit the nail right on the head with that one.
