The Age of Decadence Unofficial Gallery

On second thought it might be worth 25 bucks, I just looked through the site and read up on everything and it seems pretty cool. I might though end up buying the box version since I like hard copies of my games, and the manual will give me something to read in the bathroom.

Q: How much will Age of Decadence cost to purchase?

A: "$25 direct download, $50 for a box (proper full color box, full color manual with concept art , jewel case CD) plus shipping."

Taken from their FAQ. I applaud them in making this type of game but...come on.....not worth this amount of money.
How much do you think a game like this is worth then? Just curious. How do you determine the value of a game?

It's looking pretty good so far, and if the dialogues and quests are well-written...
You can evaluate quests and dialogues here:

Part 3 will be posted in a day or two.

By the way, is that an eye of Horus on the last screenshot?
Yes.

Will there be an egyptian-like faction in the game or something?
No. There are some Egyptian influences though. Roman, Egyptian, and Persian.

Huh? Not worth twenty-five bucks?
Well, considering I paid what amounts to 4$ for Fallout 1 and 2, it'll be tough for AoD to beat such a value-for-money ratio. :P

A bit tangential, but I would say that a game is worth whatever people are willing to pay for it - you just have to give them the option to do so. A guy buying the game for 5$ instead of 25$ is still better than him not buying it at all. Not sure how much sense such a variable pricing scheme would make business-wise, but I think it might be a workable approach for indies.

Also: JESUS CHRIST PICTURE OVERLOAD. I know that someone, somewhere, is getting his bandwidth horribly raped.

Eh, in my opinion I don't think it is. Of course I'm broke as it is so anything is too expensive.

Ever play a Spiderweb Software game? Most of them cost $25 and they're far more primitive looking than AoD, they're also made by a smaller team (one guy) and don't seem to be as fleshed out as this game, but Spiderweb games are worth $25, even more in my opinion.

I see nothing wrong with this price. I'd pay $25 for the game I've read about, and $50 if it gets a good reception.

I fully intend to buy this game. I also appreciate the pricing. $50 is standard pricing for a new release PC title anymore, and I understand the extra steps/effort/expense required for an indie developer to have the media/packaging made for their first title. $25 for the download is completely reasonable. Hell, buy a new game on Steam and you're paying what you would in the store, anyway. Granted, there is some benefit to Steam in that you can re-download and such, but it's still got to be cheaper for them to deliver a downloaded copy than a hard copy in the store.

Whether I get the download version or the shipped version will depend on the mechanics of the download.

Well, they can rest knowing that they're getting $50 from since I'm so uneasy on the whole download purchase thing (the whole not getting a physical object conundrum).
That's if the game is good guys, I'm not just paying out on day one, just to be fair. :|

By the way, in some countries, like Poland and Russia, AoD is very likely to hit the stores, since Iron Towers is in talks with publishers from these countries.

question what does this have to do with fallout or ....anything?

it looks ok.. if i was ten again and i liked that kinda stuff i guess..

It's a post-apocalyptic themed game and NMA has interest in that because Fallout is a post-apoc game and who doesn't want more of those?

in australia new boxed releases of pc games are around 90-110 $$$'s and the australian dollar is worth 95 us cents now so $50 for me is quite the bargain.

I just had a funny thought. What if a Bethesda exec were to find this posting.. He'd probably dig his hands into his eyes, cry a little bit, and be like...

"$60 million dollars on graphics, and they are willing to buy a game that with our resources would take us a few months for $50?"

Oh, but life is too unfair for that to happen. Evil people just continue to do evil things and ignore everything else. ;)

$25 to expensive!

You bloody scabby cheap scape, thats only £13, cheap as chips. I'd buy the box version myself, but i i reckon the postage would be silly money.

In Europe it would be just 15,60€.. which is really too cheap. Maybe you should adjust your pricing to 25$, 25£ and 25€. All the big companies do it.

Either way for those undecided there should be a demo, with a reasonbly big quest if I remember.

That would be great! Any idea who'd be the publisher in Poland? I'm worried that if the likes of Play.pl end up publishing (like The Fall), the mandatory translation will end up being "second rate".

That's still $5 more than Portal, which is one of the best PC games ever. Just sayin'.

Ahh, but my purchasing power is of interest to every single money-grubbing game developer in existence; they love my big, fat wallet.

Or did you mean you're involved in AoD's production chain somewhere down the line, and were informing me that they specifically don't want my money? If that's the case, then well I'm shocked.

$20 is also the price of the new Penny Arcade episodes, that are supposedly mediocre and too short for that price.

True. But I finished Portal in - lemme check - 2.2 hrs. That's not a lot of bang for your buck

But honestly, determining price by any arbitrary measure is stupid, whether it be quality or length (which is common - see PA Adventures, which is modular yet 20 USD). A seller will try to find a price people are willing to pay, and hope they'll pay it.

In the case of indie RPGs, part of the factor is that they're servicing an underserved market, but as indies they still have only a small reach. That means they have to factor in low sales and thus put their price at a level that a full company wouldn't have to.
