The books of Tolkien

One my my favorite side-stories by Tolkien is The Tale of Aragorn and Arwen. I think it's included in the appendix of my copy of LoTR, so it may be in yours as well.

If you understand the full connection between Aragorn's family and Arwen's family, the ending is just devastating. It's one of the saddest things I've ever read.

The version I have is all 3 books in one, with no appendices save exactly that tale since it continues the story and ends in it's own way.
It sure was sad, but I must say that the Children of Hurin contains the saddest things I've ever read, as far as my personal experience goes.
The full connection between Aragorn and Arwen's Family is the history of the faithful elf-friends from among the Numenoreans, and the half-elves. Part of which is the friendship of Elendil and Gil-Galad who made the last alliance, no?

Huh, I've never heard of that one. It's not included in my copy, at least.

They're actually related. Elrond, who chose the fate of the elves (immortality within the world), had a brother Elros who chose the fate of men. Elros Tar-Minyatur was the first king of Numenor. Elendil was a descendant (though not a direct descendant) of Elros, and Aragorn is a direct descendant of Elendil. Elrond is Aragorn's great-great-great x1000 uncle a few times removed. Because Elros chose the fate of men, he died a long, long time ago, while Elrond is still alive (but he's still only half-elven). Arwen is actually one-quarter human and three-quarters elf. Aragorn has a minute fraction of elven blood.

Actually Elrond is not exactly half-elven, because he's the grandson of Beren and Luthien, and Luthien was half-elf and half-Maia (her parents were Thingol and Melian), so Elrond, Arwen, and even Aragorn have a bit of Maia descent as well.

I'll see if I can dig up The Tale of Aragorn and Arwen. I thought it was in the appendix to my LotR books, but maybe not.

I remember there's a passage in LotR where someone laughs at Blibo for making up a poem about Earendil the Mariner in Elrond's house. They never mention that Earendil the Mariner is Elrond's father. You would never know that unless you read the Silmarillion.

Ah yes, I realized they were related, but hadn't made all of the connections you mentioned. I didn't know the bit about bilbo, but it's been a long time since I've read fellowship of the ring and the two towers, though I'm about to start with the hobbit and then go on to the lord of the rings.
