The do's and don'ts of feral (kill everything) play throughs.

Vat dipped, grown and still oozing with perfection
Hello everyone,
Every time I play a Fallout game I make it a point to do a "kill everything" run through the game. As I'm sure most of you understand particularly for the original titles such a task is monumental. However Fallout New Vegas was the only modern release that still maintained it's Fallout roots and as such would likely be just a challenge as the others.

Below is my rule set that I use to complete such a task, feel free to give it a try if you would like.

For anyone considering exterminating the population of the Mojave please take a moment to consider the following. As I'm sure the concept of this sounds relatively simple let me assure you that it is indeed very time consuming and actually may require planning in certain scenarios.

Bullet point TLDR rule list:
  • Feral character, must attack all NPC's in sight
  • May only interact with immortal NPC's
  • May not trade with NPC's (1 exception below)
  • Must only steal, loot, or scavenge for gear
  • No companions (If you see them, eliminate them)

When you start a new game:
Fallout New Vegas immediately starts you out in the Doc's house, the moment the player is allowed to attack they must do so and murder the man that saved their damned soul. After the doc then the whole town. This can be difficult as the player is currently a low level and has limited gear (assuming without DLC).

However once the player finishes off the town the difficulty ramps down fairly quickly, provided they didn't opt to run straight to the strip.

Some good tips for those considering this kind of run through the game. Do not talk or trade with NPC's, only speak to NPC's that cannot be killed to progress, equipment can only be gained through looting, stealing, or scavenged.

While I'm sure some of you are sitting there thinking "well that sounds easy" believe me when I say that's not quite so. However the one NPC that is acceptable to speak to is the Gun Runner protectron in the shack, they cannot be eliminated and therefore they are some kind of ex machina to allow players of this style of play to actually trade. Kind of funny the only trader set up to survive being murdered by a crazed individual is a robot.

Supplies and equipment:
If you haven't figured it out already your character will need to be self reliant for all of their needs. From crafting to reloading I strongly suggest a character build that can take advantage of the work benches. Otherwise you will need to get used to just running around with the gear of the poor guy you took out last.

Main plot line:
Approaching this can be rather difficult, as murdering the entire strip kind of throws a wrench in picking a faction, however thanks to Yes-Man you don't need to worry about the NCR, Legion, or even Mr. House. Just tidy up that nasty strip of its free loaders and Yes-Man will allow you to continue the game. Those developers really thought of everything didn't they :smug:.

In conclusion this is the personal rule set I use for such play throughs, if any of you have never tried one such as this, I suggest giving it a try. Or I believe there are mods out there that are basically the same thing so the choice is yours.

Have fun you monsters.

Or, instead of advancing the base game's main storyline, just do the DLCs in exactly opposite order (LR (nuke both NCR and Legion) -> OWB (Do the Bad Karma, definitely, or just slaughter everyone. Sadly, there's a cut ending that could've fit the entire premise of a genocide run, but eh) -> HH (trigger Chaos in Zion quest) -> finally, DM (side with Elijah)), that way you can 'end' the run by WIPE THE SLATE CLEAN! MUHAHUHAHUAHUAHUAHUAHUA

But this style of play through is literally to kill everything (that you can of course), siding with anyone is not an option unless absolutely necessary.

Oh, yeah, Elijah you can kill. Too bad, because I vaguely remember there being a cut option for you to just leave the Mojave by way of Mojave Outpost gate. That might work if you really want to just kill everything and not end the game the 'normal' way.

I find kill everythings interesting. Best games give you that option, but it's hard to do (first Deus Ex, FO1, NV), some require additional setups (FO2) and bad just lack the option (TES, FO3 and 4).

They show how creative you can get in them.

First one I ever did was in Fallout 1, that turned out to be seriously difficult. Mostly because the BOS refused to just die. Clearing out their bunker was a serious operation that required a great deal of planning and prep before hand.

Stole gatlings from everyone that had them in backpack, unloaded their ammo. When unarmed guys tried to attack me with fists they got tore apart by guards with weapons in hands. One of worst slaughters I've seen.

When I tackled them I had a character not exactly designed for stealing since he just killed everything he saw. He could sneak, but pick pocket was a wash. So I opted to plant explosives and lure them into bottle necks so I could pick them off.
