Carsten Strehse, lead developer of the Fall, continued his developer diary on RPG Vault. A bit:
Occasionally, battles can take place on nearly the whole map. In this case, Auto-Pause becomes a very efficient tool in order to manage the complexity of combat at such a large scale. One naturally zooms out with the camera in situations like this. Whenever an Auto-Pause occurs, the game will display a small message listing the reason for it. If you consider it significant, you can zoom to that event by simply clicking on the message. If it's not that important to you right now, you just ignore it. I think this is the best approach. When we started testing the combat system, it turned out to be quite annoying and irritating when the camera was zooming to every single Auto-Pause event automatically.
Link: Developer Diary on RPG Vault

I find it annoying that there are map-wide battles and an auto-pause. I thought the fall was an RPG, not an RTS?

Well, the line is blurry, isn't it? JA2 is closer to an RPG than some of the so called RPGs. TF's stats system sounds nice, that's what's most important for me in a RPG.

That's bothered me too. I have tried SOA, but I can't enjoy it. Not because it isn't a good game, it obviously is, but because team-based strategy really isn't my genre.

If I'm forced to wring myself through team-based strategy combat in the Fall...ugh...real turn-off

I do prefer having an auto-pause to being forced to play in full-force RT, though, though it's sadly no TB. Turn based was the only thing that got me through Tactics' combat system.

Tactics has fucked up RT mode indeed. I dunno if it's good comaprison but on the other hand games like Baldurs Gate have RT mode to and it worked quite good there I guess.

If JA2 had elves, swords, and fireballs, it would have been called a dungeon crawler. Since it's a modern day/sci-fi setting, it's called a tactical squad game. Go figure on that one. I call it a dungeon crawler personally.
