The "I'm a musician, kiss my ass" thread.

Don't have a mixing desk so i just used my headset microphone.. didnt sound nice, but its understandable.

Before I bought myself a mixing desk, I used Line6 POD XT to record live instruments. Of course, that costs some money too, so I recommend you buy a cheap mixer with one track only. But there is this Line 6 POD Express, for around $50. You can use it as your pocket guitar amp and a mixer :D

Since i cant use Logic Pro, could you reccomend some software used for composing without live instruments.

Cubase :)
And yeah, I'm searching everywhere for good organic sounding sampling libraries, most of them sound too cold, to "perfect" etc. I wonder which Samples Mr. MM uses...

Most of FL Studio's synths sound like that, that's why I hate this software.
When I was using Cubase (before Logic) I had this sound card called "Proteus X". It had some good VST plugins.
But y'know, mostly you have to twitch and mix those instruments and synths by yourself, to get more original and better sounds.

Also, this Synthesizer in the Modoc Track, do you know which synth that could be, Public?

Have no idea. I'm not so into synth's specification yet. Only know one synth at the moment :P
But possibly he used one of the software instruments and twitched it a little, to receive this "warm" and rich sound. In one of my tracks- "Muerto", I used a similar sounding instrument. You can hear it at the beginning.

Damn, you guys are making me want to cook some music now. Everything is boiling inside of me...

Now i'm not sure what to pick out of those two... how much does a cheap mixer with one only one track cost btw? :D

Thing is, i have a nice little Roland Micro Cube amp. It has a very decent tone, and the good thing is that it has its own controlable effects like delay, reverb, chorus etc..
I've grown very fond of it and i would rather set up the effects there, than just record the guitar's default sound and add effects afterwards through software or something.

I assume in that case a mixer would be a better choice than the Line 6?

You could also go for a external sound device, like those TASCAM thingies f.e. Because, when plugging your guitar in, with just that mixer and an onboard soundcard, you will have very high latency (you play a note and hear it a few seconds later).

Only some heavy metal type singing/grunting and play some bass. I also occasionally sing something wussier like brit pop in the shower. :)

Isn't FL's interface the most accessible though? I know I've grasped it without referencing no manual. Just banged F1 through 10 at random and everything's clear at first (or second) sight. Anyway, I just dabble but I'd say you will see result much sooner and come to them much easier in FL than in Cubase or Reason. Especially if you'll work with just your mouse. Plus you can always use ReWire to use Reason's or Cubase's plug-ins in FL, so shit sound is no longer an issue (but money may be).

I'd also try Reason before Cubase, easier to handle IMHO.

Liked your stuff for the FO3 fan soudtrack btw, Public.

Well I believe you can figure it out by yourself, because it depends on what you're into and what music are you creating.

Surf Solar is got a point.

It depends of person's taste and what style of music he or she is creating.
I hate FL because of it's design- clicking mouse buttons is not making music for me, and for everything you have to open a different window. Just not digging it, don't feel like I'm doing something at all.
With softwares like Cubase, Pro Tools and Logic Pro you have one main screen on which you can arrange everything and only effects, changing of instruments, etc, have seperate windows which you choose to open.

But it's all matter of opinion.

The majority uses FL. I suggest you, Batcha, to check all of them we talked about and choose whichever best suits you.

Thank you.

Tnx again for the input, Public.

I will try out Cubase in a few days and see how it goes from there..
Eventually i'll give Reason and FL a try i guess..

As for the recording device, im definitely going the cheapest option for start. As long as it can maintain the sound of my amp...

If i am correct, those TASCAM thingies are not cheap.. and i can handle the latency issue for now.

I'm gonna try Reason too.

BTW, there is also a simple software called Cool Edit. You might also try that.

Btw, when posting your own stuff online... Do you worry about copy-write, and that someone might steal your work.
Or is your work protected the moment you actually post it?

if memory serves, anything you write/create is automatically copyright protected as you write/create it.

something a lot of writers and musicians do is send their work to themselves in a sealed letter or package. that way it's date-stamped and usable as evidence. it's probably the best way to make sure your stuff is copyright protected until you have label or whatever to back you up.

This doesn't actually work. If I'm not mistaken, you are always protected, but the only way you get to actually take people to court is if you have it registered with the US copyright registry thingie.

you sure? might be different from here in Sweden, but I doubt it. these laws tend to be international.

anyways, what I said above is what I remember from sound engineering classes. I'm at least certain on the bit about posting your work to yourself, because we had extended discussions on the matter.

I don't know what the Swedish laws are, but I was reciting what I know about US laws.

And no, actually, these laws tend to not be international at all. The garbled mess that is international copyright law is a major reason why iTunes and the like have not done a good job of spreading their content internationally.

It's called "copyrights".

As aenemic said, everything what you create by yourself, copyrights automatically belong to you. Also sending it to yourself is one of the easiests and cheapest ways to have a proof for this copyrighted material.

There are gevernmental communities where you can register your stuff, mostly for a small fee. They will (supposedly), charge those who use your music for commercial purposes, and you'll be getting some benefits from it.

Don't be such a yank, Sander.

In every country the law is different. Sedning a copy with an original material to yourself is the easiest way many sites (CDBaby for example) and colleges talk about.

But let's face it. When your a newb in music (like me) you don't have to worry so much about being copyrighted. When you'll get higher (you made something profitable), then you should worry about it, but when it happends you can hire people to do this for you :P

Another thing. Two months ago or something like that. one Fallout fanbase made a video on youtube

Before that they didn't include my name or anything. Not even told me about it.
My friend Morbid, who works for them, told me about it. So what I did, I told them to at least put my bloody name in the description.

And so they did and everything is fine now :)

This is some amazing ambient music you have here Public, as usual. Incredibly atmospheric. It worked just fine with the FOOL video :o

Btw, here are some brainless demos I recorded this year :

As you can tell, my mixing skills still suck ass, but I'm slowly getting better at it...

Gear used :

-TonePort UX 2
-Ableton Live Suite 8 ( does all the work  , I love it )
-Gibson Les Paul Custom Axcess
-Fender John 5 Signature Telecaster

I'd like to buy a bass guitar and a Pod X3 Live or a Bugera 333 XL amp along with a decent microphone. Don't like my guitar tone right now...

I like your guitar style, it reminds me a bit of the band "God Lives Underwater".

I'd like to buy a bass guitar

Yeah, that's what missing in your tracks :)

But honestly, they have that "kick" which is great. All you need now is a sharp vocal, live drums, bass and you're ready to rock :D

Here is something I released recently, not ambient.
http://www.last.fm/music/Voytek+Pavlik/_/Distorted+Image?autostart

Here to download it.

I'm kinda proficient with the keyboard, managing to adapt songs to it and create a few tunes, but nothing overly complicated. I also play the diatonic harmonica fairly well, and always carry mine with me :D Then again, I manage mostly improvisations and adaptations that don't exceed average.

Me trying to be a guitar hero

You'll excuse the constipated face but I don't like being in front of the camera very much...
