The Resurrection of Steve Jobs: Is He the Current Day Robert House?

Well nobody said he wasn't eccentric. There is some conspiracy theories about government agents rading his home after his passing but who know.

Agreed. In pursuit of Lassez-Faire capitalism, we often forget folks like Tesla, who wanted electricity to be affordable, or flat out free, and what Salk achieved.

Tesla also wanted to build the United States an early 20th century death ray (among other assorted arrays of weaponry), and then got mad when they wouldn't fund it.

Which is understandable, which scientist worth his salt would not get crazy if his giant death ray wasn't funded.

Free and wireless. :)

Why do people automatically assume that when someone wants to build weapons, they're automatically evil or morally ambiguous somehow?
Tesla's life time was filled with useless wars. Empowering the right countries with something like a death ray would potentially result in a period of peace.
It's also no secret that nothing has advanced technology faster than (hot & cold) wars. It pushes a lot of funding into science & development of practical applications. The vast majority of these things have found applications in civilian life. From nuclear power plants to duct tape.

Yea, this was before America became a superpower. The europeans would decide to mass murder eachother a bit more before us and the soviets would get the opportunity to play in the big leagues.

Wait so America turned down, experimental weapons huh, well ain't that a kick in the head
The US had a stint where non-interventionalism was the norm. Quite a large contrast compared to America, World Police. :)

That said, they didn't turn it down, they just refused to invest in its development.
Just like the harmonic oscilator / resonance "weapon" he claimed to have accidentally created while working on a generator, its designs (if they existed) were taken by US officials after his death.

Let's not forget that some reports about Tesla's inventions were severly exaggerated. His electric car, for example, or the free and wireless energy transfer. And, most likely, his "death ray". Tesla had to obey the same laws of physics as everyone else, and even though people like to think that Tesla knew things that others don't, it is highly unlikely that in the past 100 years nobody stumbled on the same special laws of physics he allegedly knew of, despite them being remarkably close to what the rest of us does know.
And, while he was surely a genius, he was also batshit crazy.
Don't believe everything that's been posted on the Internet.

We are not talking about Command and Conquer right?

Guess we all lucked out that he wasn't around in our time to sell it to Haliburton. Who knows? Maybe he was reincarnated and developed the technology for an evil Empire "A long time ago, in a galaxy far, far away....."

aint that a kick in the head

Hands down, my favorite song in FONV. Long Live da Deanmeister!!!

It's clear that you are super jelly of Tesla's inventions. Your fancy lasers cannot hope to match the original Tesla Death Ray.

Yeah my surprise/sarcasm comes from that I am generally leery of those kind of anecdotes attributed to Tesla. Tesla Mythology (esp on the internet) has grown from a "genius who was overlooked/ahead of his time and died penniless" to "had all sorts of secret powerful and pseudoscience experimental weapons etc" so if I'm unfamiliar I take everything said with a big grain of salt. With regard to his fans Ive met have been mainly two types; STEM people who are interested in hard science applications of his works and the other type of Tesla fan who fall into the "UFO types" if I'm being diplomatic here. The former interest me and the latter I tolerate.

This topic reminded me of movie as old as Fallout: Pirates of Silicon Valley (USA, 1999)
Not a documentary, pretty informative though. Basically it's about stealing - S. Jobs stealing ideas from Xerox, B. Gates stealing from Jobs.. Stealing everywhere!

I don't know if it is true, but what he said about eugenics is pretty terryfing and interesting at the same time. Or well his future predictions about it, where you would say that it is ludicrous on the other side though, could medical procedures lik Amniocentesis be seen as a modern form of eugenics ...

What he said about females though is pretty awesome. But like I said, if it is true that this is exactly what he said.

Meh, what ever, I would still rather want to see Tesla beeing resurrected than Jobs, if they really have to resurrect someone.

If we're going to start resurrecting geniuses, can we get back John von Neumann before we get to Tesla? I figure the only reason JvN isn't a "popular science hero" is because the stuff he did was somewhat esoteric. But still, the man basically invented the modern computer because the ones at his disposal were insufficient for the H-Bomb project.

I read a book about operating systems yesterday and it said he played in the nba for 6 years. Is that some inside joke?

edit: it was a joke, and my eyes are shit

Eh, I think it also had something to do with the fact that most of his research was classified by the British government - see the history of the Enigma machine, and that he was gay.

*Edit, oh Shit, I totally confused Neuman with Turing! Both geniuses either way. And you could give both equal credit for the modern computer, and probably a few more crazy people. Hmm, is it just me or do I see a pathern here? Looks like you have to be crazy to be such a genius like they have been. - I mean crazy in a good sense. I mean I don't mind my scientists wearing skirts and stockings as long as they do their job.
