The ruins

The biggest problem with consoles is the fact that they are getting to be on par with computers, but with the advantage of standardization.

If they had the interface a computer allows, I think things would be worse.

I'm rather afraid of what the computer game market will be like in a few years when the next gen systems hit.

Technology is the key here.

Until you can upgrade the hardware in your Xbox2 and Hi-Def televisions are the norm the PC market will remain on top.

Standardization also has some problems of its own. Though it does give developers a good idea of their limitations it doesn't allow for too much innovation concerning graphics. Even in Soul Calibur 2 on the PS2 I've had a few framerate slowdowns when both fighters do a graphically intensive move.

If the games on consoles were any good IMO, I'd play them. The fact is PC games are far more enjoyable for me. And as long as others feel the same way, there'll be a market for PC games. The current publishers are thick as shit though and so they're not making any money out of it because, PC gamers generally demand quality rather than crap. People are always complaining about pirating - well my experience of the pirate and warez communities is that if the game is good, the majority of them will buy the game. The pirate viewpoint, which I fully sympathise with, is that we're force fed so much shit and hype in today's society that there's very little quality gaming to be had at the moment, the only way to find out is to pirate.

What's ironic is you can pirate a console game far easier than a pc game. no cd keys there, all you need is a mod chip (depending on system) or an emulator.

The one thing PC games will (hopefully) always have over consoles is mod and patchability. Something a Console game probably will never have.

All these developers going to consoles see is fast creation = fast return. I guess they forgot that quality is better than quantity.

News Story:

"A terrible cry of anguish was heard around the world today as power surges around the world, occurring simultaneously, destroyed every console gaming system currently owned by consumers. Police believe there is a connection between these outages and a mysterious cult known only as "F3". Apparently, there were unauthorized persons at all of the power stations where the surges originated. They wore shirts with "F3" printed on them and chanted, "F3 will live again!" More on this story as it develops..."

In regards to Bioware they're working on Jade Empire (x-box exclusive I think) but someone with more insight than me (can't remember who) said they're also working on a PC only RPG.

I guess we'll see what the future brings...

Your right on both accounts:

Jade Empire is an X-box exclusive

Their other game is a PC RPG. Both are new "worlds".
both roleplaying games based on two new intellectual properties, created and owned by BioWare

Yup there's a highly secret project at Bioware being mentioned from time to time, probably a CRPG. It is not a sequel to NWN though.

Whatever it is, its a PC RPG, and its not a sequel (at least not a direct one). If I understand that correctly anyways. That was taken from the Bioware site, so I expect that to be correct.

EDIT: Jade Empire looks interesting. To bad its seemingly X-box only.

That is inevitable. Game consoles will become gaming PCs with a sexy box, and those fools will be none the wiser.

But, they will finally be quality products (talking about Xbox2, or its proper spiritual successor). They will literally be gaming PCs that came with controllers and use a TV. They will finally have real multiplayer capabilities and user modifications and creativity and a real community will become the norm.. **

THe main thing is dealing with all the dumbasses, and also the controller interface is not flexible enough yet.

I think the only question is the upgradability. I hope no one flat out says, "these console kiddies are too dumb". I'm sure someone will feel like making consoles easily upgradable, especially seeing as they will just be PCs and the forerunner of these new systems is Microsoft. I just hope they won't constrain the upgrade options too much and overcharge.. better than nothing I guess.

** That is what I tell myself at night to feel better. If all the great things about computer gaming pass away, I'm afraid I will have to kill the console kiddies. Kill - them - all

Interface is everything, the one thing about consoles that really bites.

<edit>
ok, and I guess simplistic game play.

has there EVER been a console game with depth (not including Morrowind since it was a PC game ported to the XBox)

It seems like console style = simplistic style.

As someone who worked in the games industry for the last 7 years, I'll tell you exactly what it is... STANDARDIZATION. The software developers have given up on the PC because the PC industry couldn't get it's collective shit together and come up with standards. You don't know what a nightmare it is to try and make a game work for (almost) everybody. It takes up so much of the development time and energy that the prospect of working on a title that has set parameters and will have NO HARDWARE issues, can look pretty tempting. These people are only in it for the money, less development on R&D, standardazation and localization means more bucks in the long run and shorter development times. It sucks. Consoles suck. They will always be three years behind the capabilities of the PC. IMHO.

I've been thinking- why couldn't you play Fallout on a console? No keyboard required, no need for precise mouse movement as combat is turn based, and everything else is cursor based. For example, you could move the Vault Dweller with the up/down left/right buttons, and the item cursor w/ the control stick on the PS2. When combat came, it would turn into the movement/aiming cursor.

For skills and such, just press a button to bring up the skill dex- another button would bring up the use inventory, sub menus, etc. Is it just that consoles are geared so towards little kids that no one will ever come up w/ a quality RPG for them?

Because console's just cant accurately reproduce the feel of the game.

Consoles have ther place, Action games, FPS's... but..

IMO Console's just cant handle an RPG

I'm just wondering if that is the console designer's fault or the console hardware's fault, if control is not an issue.
