thinking of learning new language

so what should I do? I'd like to learn Chinese Mandarin or mebbe German. German will be pretty easy compared to Mandarin, but I don't want to waste a year or two learning German when I could use that time to learn Mandarin.

Dig?

I've also thought about learning it (how). It seems everyone loves moving to a different country so they can pick up the language, but I think I'll be like AHHHHH DO YOU SPEAK FUCKING ENGRISH?! so I'll probably study a bit of both language then choose mebbe.

Any suggestions or something? Language books, ways to learn, languages you're learning? I don't want to be limited to just English.

Go German. With learning a new language, it really depends on your age. If youre uni age you can go study in a german speaking country, whereas if you were 40 that option really wouldnt be open to you.

Since you speak english, any language with germanic roots is going to be easyier.

But if you like the challenge (and have the time) take anything outsuide of Latin or germanic roots.

It also depends of your age, my nieces at 3 and 5 already understands English, french and spanish, and theolder ones speaks all three also.

I would go Chinese. It's easier than it looks and if you learn the language with the writing system, it's even easier. Do Mandarin and skip Cantonese. Also learn the Mainland forms rather than the Taiwanese long-forms of the language.

If not that, try Spanish or French. Once you master one of the Romance languages, the others become a lot easier to acquire. Also, better beaches in countries with Romantic languages than either German or Chinese.

I already went through 4 years of French and 3 years of German but didn't like the teachers or the way we went over numbers for a year. And I didn't pick anything up at all.

I might try chinese then. ^-^

Dude what a coincedence!

I was also planing to learn German on Summer vacation.I'll use "Learn to speak German".

Coincidence indeed! I was just about to start learning Mandarin. Cantonese is less common in China, so I think I'll skip that.

Since German is a very boring and generally sucky language, I'd suggest Chinese Mandarin.

Of course you could learn Vietnamese and thus says, "Me love you long time, Me so horny" in the native language.

Wanna know the German word for an assassin who infiltrates the tribe of Hottentottes, kills a mother of a retarded, stuttering child, gets locked in a sheet-covered kangaroo cage, but manages to escape?

Hottentottenstottertrottelmutterlattengitterkotterbeutelrattentater!

That's what I love about German. Just string together a lot of words to make one long annoying word.

My German is a bit rusty as I've not spoken, written, or heard it in about 4 years. But I still really like the language.

Any language that sounds like angry grunts kicks ass.

But if you've already taken 3 years of German, do go for Mandrin. It's a "pretty" language to say the least. I can't remember how to say my name in Mandrin anymore, but I've got the symbols. "Ryno" is a really big word with those symbols.

I failed in my attemt to learn french last year. Je me veux repose..

Gustav, what you said means "i want myself put down"

That can be arranged

The only german i can remember from my college class is how to say that i don't speak german.

I've taken 2 years of german at school through a distance learning program so we had to watch a video 3 out of 5 days and then had phone lessons on the other two days...not exactly the best way to learn but i made it out with a B+.

I took spanish for 2 years in high school, not that i wanted to, but it was required and there were no alternate languages to choose from...

never could understand the language, but i passsed both years with a b-.

I've been learning how to do PSE (Pidgin Signed English ) for the last two summers. I'm hoping to learn some true ASL (American Sign Language) this summer.

They are completely different from English, and count as a foreign language credit at most high schools and colleges. Not mine, unfortnately...
