thinking of learning new language

Considering that we where invaded by and conquered by the Danes (save the Saxons, and the Welsh) not once but TWICE, I would not say that we where invaded by the greatest countries EVAR (I saw "we" as I'm probably as WASPY as anybody here)

When did the Danish conquer Chicago?

LOL, he is probably referring to England, but it is CCR, so he could be referring to Turkey just as easily.

Notice the WASPY. Meaning White Anglo-Saxon Protestant-y. Ie. he's talking about England (or Great Britain, or possibly the British Island, depending on your point of view).

THIS is real English
Fæder ure þu þe eart on heofonum
si þin nama gehalgod
tobecume þin rice
gewurþe þin willa
on eorðan swa swa on heofonum
urne gedæghwamlican hlaf syle us to dæg
and forgyf us ure gyltas
swa swa we forgyfað urum gyltendum
and ne gelæd þu us on costnunge
ac alys us of yfele soþlice.
Bwaha. I love the "Ye Olde English" stuff. It sounds a lot like the Scandinavian languages.

PS: No offense is a stupid sentence, CCR, don't use it. No offense means that you know you're offending someone, but are too lazy not to.

Macedonian and Bulgarian have some agglutinative properties, due to influence of Turkish

Is that for sure? It's not like I actually know anything about Bulgarian (and since we're in the business of splicing/merging languages, Macedonian is little more than a dialect of Bulgarian :)), but from what I've seen it actually seemed very analytic. I.e. fixed word order, no inflection (extensive use of prepositions instead), and what have you. Should have mentioned that before, too. :?

Yep. Bulgar means "Mixed" in proto-Turkick (meaning they where probably mixed Mongol, Turk and Urlaic), and the origional Bulgarians where related to the Volga Bulgars.

Turkish was-however-also influential in the development of Modern Bulgarian. Turks are 9% of the Bulgarian population, and was signifigantly more until recently.

And English is basically a creole, and AFAIK those are considered separate languages, so there.
Czech ain't exactly the purest language of them all, being a quasi-independant part of the German Empire for so many years, not to mention being part of Austria, was fairly important.

England. Almost all of my ancestors where over there at the time.

It's closest related to Icelandic, so, yeah. I personally think it is kind of cool, English is kind of relitively gay.

It also mean's I can't get banned for it!

Come on Sander, you have to admit that Dutch is not the most attractive of languages. I admitted as much about English.

No language is without foreign influence (except one of a perfectly isolated community, if such a thing has ever truly existed). And I wasn't trying to take a shot at the English language or those who speak it, I was just replying to this.

English. I'm not even certain if it's a real language any more.

Oh, but I would like to nudge you for a bit, here:

Surely you realise that this sort of thing is entirely subjective, so he doesn't have to admit a damn thing? :)

Seriously, Serbian and Croatian are two separate languages, even though they are almost identical.

I kind of said my opinion on this in an earlier post:

In terms of the alphabet and writing/spelling, it just doesn't get any better than Serbian. 100% phonetic. Every letter is just one sound.

Don't know if you know this, but Bosnians are the third largest immigrant group to Chicago

Very true. It's ok, but i have to admit i'm kind of getting tired of them. I still haven't met a true "Belgradian" (as myself) around here.

Really?
That's kind of odd. I know maybe one or two people from Serbia, and a few Bosnians.

Are most of the Bosnians you know Muslims? The only ones I know converted because in Hyde Park, Islam=Nation of Islam, and they don't take kindly to blue eyed Muslims.

Meh, I don't care about that. Although it'll probably depend a lot on who's talkign, there's a huge difference between someone from Amsterdam and someone from Limburg, for instance. Personally, I don't like the sound of Amsterdams. Plus, I have heard Dutch for my entire life, so I don't think it sounds crap.

And I have a problem with the sentence "No offense", it's silly. I don't give a shit that you think Dutch sounds like crap. ;)

Dutch is an enormously unattractive, crude, rasping, annoying, innefficient language. I can't understand people crying about it fading into English, even Language Purists.

The small vocabulary also makes it a terrible literary language, much like German. English or French, biatch.

Again, this depends on who you listen to. Try listening to someone from Limburg and you'll notice that it doesn't need to sound like that.
And it isn't annoying that it's fading into English, it's the way in which that is happening. (eg. LOL!).

I disagree, methinks the vocabulary is quite large. However, people only use very few of those words, making it seem like it has a small vocabulary. English has more words that are more frequently used.

English or French, biatch.
Ugh. Not French. You can't cuss properly in it. Which means it sucks. There's no power behind any cusses there.
Plus, almost all French are arrogant annoying fucks. :P

Wanna bet?
That was sarcasm. 'Duh.

English? Small vocabulary?

It's not Greek, but the unique combination of Romantic and Germanic elements are fairly unique.

No, he said that German and Dutch had a small vocabulary. Then the next sentence was that French and English were good. :P
