Thumbnail problems in map My Pictures

Since a couple of days, the thumbnails in the map My Images don't show up anymore, even though I selected the option (option 'Miniatuurweergave' in Dutch). All I see are the icons of JPEG or the red/blue icon of png-files, not a small version of the image. At the same time I'm seeing weird things appear on fora, even on this one: Last Post is a rectangle and sometimes those rad signs in front of the posts are empty rectangles as well.

Also: when I click one of the icons in the map My Images, they don't open. I have to open Paint Shop Pro and open the images via that program.

Anyone around here know how I can solve this? I've done several virus scans et cetera (Spybot, Ad-Aware, AVG, SmitFraudFix, ...) and got rid of a whole bunch of crap that was hiding on my pc, but the problem still ain't solved.

Please help.

What do you mean, "your map"?
In the file browser?

What operating system are you using?
File browser?
What image editing programs do you have?

Here's a screenshot.

afbeelding2bd5.jpg

As you can see: the only thumbnails that show up are pdf-files (three in a row), the others are just the regular icons of jpeg, png, bmp, not a small version of the actual image.

Map, is that "directory" in English? I dunno. It's just in My Documents --> My Images.

I'm a total computer illiterate, so what a file browser is, I dunno. Is that Adobe Photoshop Album Starter 3.0? I'm using XP sp2 home-edition, that I know.

I also know that bmp-files were usually opened by some Windows application (Windows viewer), whilst jpeg's were usually opened by Adobe, but that doesn't work anymore.

It's pretty annoying, because I usually use random letter combinations or gibberish to name files, and now I have to open ten files or more before I can find the one I need.

I wish I had a map of my images. It would be oh so much more fun than browsing an atlas!

Hmmm... In English, that map might be called My Pictures. I dunno.
In "View", the option "Thumbnails" is selected.
(Damned Dutch version of Windows, gets me all confused).

Have you recently installed an image viewing program or something similar? If so, it might have screwed up windows' file associations or something.

Done that. It changes the way the page looks, but whatever option I choose, the thumbnails don't show up (and selecting "thumbnails"/"miniatuurweergave" should do the trick, but it doesn't).

Also this:

I don't have this happening to me all the time, but it started happening at the same time those thumbnails stopped showing up. Maybe it's connected in some way?

No, that's the weird thing. I haven't installed or uninstalled anything. The only "wrong" thing I've done lately is download some naughty pictures, but I've already deleted those and did several scans with AVG, Spybot, and so on (thinking they were the problem). Got rid of some Trojan Horse crap and Trackers (whatever those are), but it didn't solve the problem.

Okay, since you are using Windows, your file browsers is Windows Explorer (thats the part of Windows you use to look at directories).

As DirtyDreamDesigner asked, have you installed any new software onto your pc around the time this started?

Try Hijackthis, that seems something I once had to deal on a PC of a friend of mine.

Oh but before try to empty the cache on your browsers, and reboot, just to see what happens.

what's that "HP View" thing? that aint standard. might fuck up the way your computer reads file extensions.

had the same on my mom's computer when she installed Picasa. all jpegs got buttfucked.

I didn't have a clue what it was, so I clicked it: apparently, it's a Hewlett Packard tool called HP Image Zone Plus. And here's the funny thing: that tool does show me the thumbnails!

I do think it's been on my computer for quite some time, though, probably a year or longer, it probably comes with my scanner or printer which are both HP.

I suppose I could start using that tool, or do you know for sure that my problems would be solved if I uninstalled it?

Did what Briosafreak suggested (i.e. cleared my browser's cache), but what am I supposed to do with the logfile of HijackThis? I don't understand anything of it. What am I supposed to delete?

This is getting annoying...

EDIT:

Nevermind.

Looking at your running processes and log file, your pc looks like a cesspool for potential failure.

All I can suggest is to learn about security and reformat your pc after backing some stuff up. And don't get realplayer, and for the most part NEVER install any software unless you need it or read some reviews from some geeks first (paid reviews don't count).

This is a bit of an anomaly, and I don't know what to tell you, but I have some suggestions that might make your life easier inthe future and prevent this kind of thing from happening.

You know when you go to the Task Manager after pressing ctrl+alt+del and you can look at the processes tab to see whats running on your pc?

Well google every single process on there, find which ones are not crucial to your pcs security, and close the processes one at a time until the problem is fixed. If it does get fixed, go to "start menu > run: msconfig" and go to "starup" and uncheck the box for the offending program. If it doesn't... well I dunno, then it's something else :P

Have you tried doing a system restore to an earlier date to see if that fixes it?

Also, what happens when you double click on an image?

I just solved it. After googling for hours, I found the answer on a Dutch site (yeah, Dutch, man!). Was something called a WMF exploit (don't ask me, I don't have a clue what that's supposed to be). All I had to do was go to Start --> Run and type: regsvr32 %windir%\system32\shimgvw.dll
Reboot et voilà: everything works again.

I'm so glad the world is filled with computer nerds. :)

@xdarkyrex: thanks for the suggestions. I know my pc is a mess. I installed realplayer because it allows me to download youtube vids and other vids without much problems. Why is it so bad?

I still have problems with these boards, though. I still get the weird boxes showing up. Grrrr....

Realplayer is one of the most consistent malware delivery tools on the web.

Never use it.
EVER.

Download and play youtube vids with any one of a number of flv players (Riva flv player, for example), and simply download them by using a firefox extension or something similar.

If you really must use realmedias proprietary video, lookup "real alternative"

There are Firefox extensions that make that for you without installing adware.

Your system is in shambles, maybe it's time for a nice reinstalation?

It's really in a sorry state...

Sheez... you guys can tell this by simply looking at that HijackThis logfile? That's awesome. Really. See, to me, that logfile looks like a shopping list - in Japanese.

Thing is: I got this pc for free and I did a full restore when I got it, but that forced me to buy a new version of Word. I had to register that new version of Word via the internet to make it work and if I do a new full restore, I will have to buy a new version again (I know this for sure - I'll just reinstall Word and register it and Microstupid will say: your version has already been registered, sorry, you'll have to buy yet another copy).
Again: I'm a complete and utter computer illiterate. There's probably tons of ways to bypass that, but I wouldn't know how to do that.

Would the sad condition of my pc explain why it's so goddamn slow even though it's a Pentium 4?

Shit, I feel so stupid now...

your version has already been registered, sorry, you'll have to buy yet another copy

What should happen is that you uninstall the program and, only after the system is reinstalled, you should be able to install Word again, and activate it.

But I understand your apprehension, things rarely go smoothly with Microsoft... :(

And even for those that aren't used to read HijackThis your system is clearly a complete mess... really, just look at the files missing, the mess with the toolbars, the crammed HP installation, filled with crap...

And so on...

Your PC, if its a pentium 4 and a hand-me-down, is very likely to be single core.

A single core PC can only handle on process at a time. For every process after the first, your computer switches back and forth between them so quickly that it looks like it is doing multiple things at once.

C:\WINDOWS\System32\svchost.exe
C:\WINDOWS\system32\svchost.exe
C:\WINDOWS\System32\svchost.exe
C:\WINDOWS\System32\smss.exe
C:\WINDOWS\system32\winlogon.exe
C:\WINDOWS\system32\services.exe
C:\WINDOWS\system32\lsass.exe
C:\WINDOWS\system32\spoolsv.exe

Crucial windows files, ignore.

C:\WINDOWS\system32\Ati2evxx.exe
C:\WINDOWS\System32\Ati2evxx.exe

This is likely your GPU driver, but the fact that there are two makes me suspicious. I suggest getting these processes scanned.

C:\WINDOWS\Explorer.EXE
Explorer is the program that you use on the PC that is part of windows that lets you look at the files on your hard drive or optical drives or whatever. Its an essential part, although you can replace it with other software if you really want to. I don't like it, but most people prefer it due to being already used to it. I use Directory Opus.

C:\Program Files\Java\j2re1.4.2_03\bin\jusched.exe
Updates your Java, utterly pointless for most people.

C:\windows\system\hpsysdrv.exe
HP system thing that basically makes your computer that knows it is an HP. Almost utterly useless, unless you use online tech-support. It logs how many times you have done system recovery, as well, for who knows what reason. I say kill it.

C:\WINDOWS\System32\hphmon05.exe
HP process that helps you use your media card readers with the HP Photosmart stuff. If you don't need that, kill it.

C:\HP\KBD\KBD.EXE
HP program, lets you use the programmable keys on your Logitech multimedia keyboard. If you don't have one, kill this.

C:\Program Files\InterVideo\Common\bin\WinCinemaMgr.exe
Allows you to use an IR remote to watch TV on your pc, lets windows know that there is a DVD in the computer (but it is not at all required to play DVDs). For the most part, completely useless.

C:\Program Files\Common Files\InterVideo\SchSvr\SchSvr.exe
Windows DVR program, only useful if you use it.

C:\Program Files\Multimedia Card Reader\shwicon2k.exe
Driver for your 7-in-1 card reader. Thats all it does, kill it if you don't use the card readers or don't have it.

C:\WINDOWS\ALCXMNTR.EXE
Sound driver, leave it alone if you like sound. It also tracks what you do and sends it back to RealTek... but I guess you gotta take the good with the bad.

C:\Program Files\Adobe\Photoshop Album Starter Edition\3.0\Apps\apdproxy.exe
Completely pointless unless you use Adobe Album Starter to interface with a camera.

C:\Program Files\Common Files\InstallShield\UpdateService\issch.exe

C:\PROGRA~1\Grisoft\AVG7\avgcc.exe

C:\Program Files\QuickTime\qttask.exe
This just manages Quicktime and is completely unnecessary. Waste of RAM.

C:\Program Files\Logitech\Video\LogiTray.exe

C:\Program Files\Common Files\Real\Update_OB\realsched.exe

C:\PROGRA~1\Sony\SONICS~1\SsAAD.exe

C:\PROGRA~1\Grisoft\AVG7\avgamsvr.exe

C:\PROGRA~1\Grisoft\AVG7\avgupsvc.exe

C:\PROGRA~1\Grisoft\AVG7\avgemc.exe

C:\WINDOWS\System32\Tablet.exe
This is your Wacom tablet driver, its needed to use the device. If you don't have one and don't plan to get one, I suggest just getting rid of this.

C:\WINDOWS\System32\wuauclt.exe
This is the process that manages automatic updates in Windows. If you don't want those on (I hate them), I can explain to you how to get rid of them.

C:\Program Files\Trend Micro\HijackThis\HijackThis.exe
This is just HijackThis cuz it was running, ignore it.

This is the list of your processes, that is all the stuff that is running at once. As a general rule, you want AS FEW of those running at any given time as possible. The more, the slower. Also, they take up space in your RAM. It's also worth mentioning that ANY of these can be a stealth virus that is using a common file name to go unnoticed. Scan them all. (google is your friend!)

...okay, I halfway did that I suppose.
I'ma go take a nap and finish that when I get back.

I would actually advise against turning off automatic updates. For one, you can adjust the settings so that it doesn't automatically download or install anything, but simply tells you when updates are available so you can do it at your leisure (which is what I do). For another, though the updates aren't always (and often aren't) entirely necessary, some fix security problems and other critical issues.

However, skip the Windows Firewall, if you haven't already. You can get much better firewall protection from free programs on the web, or just do like I do and use a router for the hardware firewall and just be smart about what you do on the internet.
