Tim Cain joins Obsidian Entertainment

I should've added "financially speaking". 50% sale on Steam for a weekend and still look at the numbers on vgchartz... ouch.

vgchartz is inaccurate as hell and doesn't count steam sales at all. Though it wasn't a big hit at all of course. Apart from that though, the game seems to have been pretty cost efficent and it still gets the DLC. So, I wouldn't say it was another Alpha Protocol.

Yeah, you're right. Even if it didn't hit 1 million copies sold, the DLC still being developed makes you assume that the sales were good enough for them.

Even though I am just as happy as the next guy that Tim found a new job at some studio where he probably can do more what he likes to do and not some MMO stuff, I can understand what Per means. Ofcourse, Cain was one of the creative heads behind the thing we all love, but people often seem to forget that it's not just a single guy developing a game and giving birth to many ideas, it needs more than that. Obsidian today has not much to do with the Interplay Team back in the day.. People also move on, develop different ideas and thoughts about gamedesign. And last but not least, he will "just" be a coder at first, not a project lead of anything. Not saying people shouldn't be happy, but this kind of over-hyping only grants disapointment later on if the next game isn't gonna be some uber-duper super RPG. ;)

I think the huge numbers of FoNV compensate for their other games. They did lay off people because of AP, did that also happen after DS3?

I surely hope bethesda gives obsidian the means to do the next real fallout. And if you compare sales of Fo3 and FoNV I think, even Fo3 having more in total, the cost/win ratio for FoNV was the better one.

Concerning if that is a good news in general: I think we can at least agree that it really is not bad news? It either means no change at all or a small/big good change. We'll never know what will be the case.

They didn't lay off people "because of" AP, they layed off people because there weren't enough projects going around. They're developers, not publishers, most of the profit from big sales goes to publishers, not developers. They just live from project to project.

Well, cause and effect. If AP had been a hit maybe they gotten more projects.

Were even the original team to assemble again and make Fallout: XXX with a 3d fancy iso engine, it won't meet people expectations, and not because the Fallout fanbase is made of angry bad people (maybe I am angry and bad, but that's another can of worms :) ) but because it's simply human, people have different and specific expectations.

That said, Tim Cain is a talented guy and joins a developer probably many people here like, so I don't see what's so bad about getting excited about it.

For those newer users that might've missed these:

Tim Cain interview with Matt Chat

part 1
part 2
part 3

He talks about how he got into the business, developing Fallout, his thoughts on Fallout 3 and New Vegas and his projects at Troika.

Yeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeehhhhhhhhhhhhhaaaaaaaaaawww! God this is like a dream come true!

I understand he's not much of a leader in his current position, but that doesn't mean he can't throw in an idea into the basket.

Also, I don't think that personally I will be dissapointed; I've been so ever since Fallout 3 came out, and, frankly speaking, New Vegas, with its engine, sometimes sloppy writing and lack of freedom (not always) - did not make me extremely happy. I always thought the idea of Fallout was to shape whoever you want in a harsh wasteland (outside combat), not follow a specific path.

At least allow Tim to dictate some canon here, I just want to know the universe in much more detail because it'll suffice for the time being.

Susceptible to the common cold? Hay fever during Spring? A bit of ego stroking while taking his part in developing a phenomenal - yet assumed to be second rate - video game?

You decide.

Oh and. Didn't know there was a third Matt interview :)

It may be my imagination, but I think he disliked the game.

02:04 'I thought they did a good job in butchering the series.' Damn straight, Timothy.

Hopefully Obsidian will grow some balls and release an original intellectual property and make a game that's not all about the tense and none about the sense.

lulz

Anything that's not filled with filler boring unstrategical combat, really.

And then Bethesda to give them Fallout 4 to make as they (Obsidian) see fit.
I think Bethesda is working on Fallout 4 from long time...
Another Fallout game from Obsidian would not necessarily be "Fallout 4", just as New Vegas was not Fallout 4.

I should really stop masturbating to this now.

I'm starting to feel weak and exhausted...

yep, I totally see BethSoft rinsing and repeating: by the time Skyrim is getting the last DLC they will be not far from releasing FO4 taking place in East Coast, all the while they give Obsidian the opportunity to develop another FO game which won't be a "true" sequel, akin to New Vegas. Of course, if I remember correctly Beth is working on some other project, so who knows.

Of course, I totally prefer a new sci-fi RPG IP with nice 3d isometric view, turn-based combat (I can concede optional turn-based), a distinct "world-map", dialog trees, all-affecting stats, small and big choices/actions taking their toll on the story as the game advances... all under the wise direction of the Avellone-Sawyer-Cain triumvirate. :deal: sigh... I feel so old.

Next Bethesda will buy Obsidian and have them work on TES 6, a post apocalyptic game in the elder scrolls series that weaves together TES and Fallout.
Agreed. And hiring Tim Cain will be used to legitimize the meld.
