Tim Cain joins Obsidian Entertainment

While this is very good news indeed, I'm trying to not get my hopes up for a return to more classic RPGs or even Obsidian getting another shot at a Fallout game. It would be great if that happened, but I don't want to set myself up for disappointment.

Best of luck to Mr. Cain. :)

It's hard to say what this means, for all we know the man was desperate to work again after leaving his old job (with the kiddies, dog and mortgage) and Fergus took pity on the old bastard. One thing about this industry is nothing is certain...Obsidian could be gone in a year or two, or making the greatest game ever, we just don't know. Good luck Tim, I hope for the game industry's sake, Obsidians next game is a masterpiece...

Fantastic news, that made my night!

While I agree with Per about Tim not joining his original team, I believe they're all pretty smart guys as well as great game developers/designers. Sure, the market might not be right for the type of game that we'll die to play but I'm confident that they can come up with something innovative and unique in it's own right.

Keep in mind that even though Tim is hired as a senior programmer, some game companies are very fluid in terms of who contributes what.

But, yes, now I'm secretly masturbating to the thought of Leonard Boyarsky and Jason Anderson Joining Tim and MCA at Obsidian. Though, lets all keep in mind that Trokia Games did fail as a company...

On that note, I hope that Tim Cain finds a happy place in his career where he doesn't have to take time away from designing and developing great games to manage a business, and I hope that place is Obsidian. :)

Another Fallout game from Obsidian would not necessarily be "Fallout 4", just as New Vegas was not Fallout 4.

Well, New Vegas was actually Fallout 3...the true Fallout 3 that is.
The game that bethesda made was the real spin-off.

The way Activision fucked Trokia up the arse I'm surprised those guys ever wanted to make another game...it's one thing to be a great game developer, but if you're tied to a douchebag publisher like Activision, then God help you. A game developer is like the hooker on the street corner, and the publisher is the pimp that sucks the life from their sorry arses, and when the time is right discards them like trash.

I don't see why Obsidian can't release a dumbed down action game that millions will buy, then work on a game that they'll actually enjoy doing. Since they will have tens of millions $$$ in their pocket anyways. Perhaps even sell of the new action IP to someone and get some more cash.

Great way to do business, right? :)

No, the guys at Blizzard know how valuble Leonard Boyarsky is. Blizzard didn't make him the world designer of Diablo 3 for nothing.

The only reason people buy dumbed down action games is the publishers' large advertising budget (see Fallout 3, any new Call of Duty). It has nothing to do with the actual quality of the game. If enough adverts put the idea that a game is good into a guy's head, he's going to buy it because that's what he believes.

Good news, this can only be good for Obsidian, hope they get a new fresh IP going now!

Best of luck to them.

Brings new meaning to "POS". Power of Suggestion.

I dont think only publishers are the evil people and developers the poor guys with no rights. It sure happens quite often that way. But knowing how the development of Gothic 3 went. Well ... shit can be thrown in both directions.

Reconite, yes, but what I was referring to how a lot of video game consumers nowdays are enjoying dumbed down action games more. I know people who would never ever buy an RPG in their lives, even if it was released by Infinity Ward or DICE or something.

So the point is, if they make a game that will appeal to many just by reading a blog somewhere or hearing it from friends or something, it'll give them some money to do a project that personally they will enjoy doing.

Oh and, maybe they'll get some better programmers after all.

Heh. Truthfully, though, it is kinda funny to look back in retrospect of some of the things I was so concerned about:

"A fuckin' active atomic bomb in the middle of a town?!"

Play through Fallout 2 - oh hi Anna and (if you played the restoration project) primitive tribe ghosts.

Never read that interview before, though. Spanks for the link.
