Tim Cain on Fallout 3/New Vegas, Troika and more

I thought the only really crappy location was San Francisco. I mean, it was fun on its own - but it had little to do with Fallout. Karate fighters with guns? That is 90s, not 50s. It would belong more to Wasteland, really.

The thing that made San Fran crappy, in my opinion, wasn't the Karate. It was how little was done with the Hubologists, there is basically no gain from joining them, you lock yurself out of a lot of quests in the city, for no gain whatsoever, they don't have an interesting story or anything, they seem more like a MAD joke than a well tought out faction.

Imma read this tomorrow and probably play some Underrail. SLOW WORK DAYS ARE THE BEST!*

I understand Fallout 2 had some dumb sidequests, but really Surf, what is the pinnacle of cRPGs in your opinion? I am genuinely interested to see what your thoughts are on the subject; Do you expect perfection or simply have a different opinion on what game or games have exhibited the best narrative structure(s)?

I can see how he would be disappointed with disconnectedness in Fo2 if he had specific plans for it and expected to develop that angle much, much more than in Fo1. Otherwise it makes little sense. The political connections between areas in Fo2 are still many times more meaningful than anything in that regard in Fo1.

We had felt constrained by Fallout's world map, with its relatively small coverage of North America and the inability to place handmade content without also placing a location on the map. We wanted to make a large, open world for the player to use as a playground. The term “sand box game” wasn't in use then, but that is a good term for what we were trying to make. We want a huge epic storyline, and we felt that we needed a lot of space in which to tell it. And of course, we would need that space later for the many sequels we had planned.

Ugh.. I always forget. What company owns the Arcanum IP now? I'm almost glad the sequel that they had discussed didn't go into development, since - in my opinion - VtmB was better suited for the Source engine and first-person viewpoint. VtmR needed the gameplay change more than Arcanum did.

I'd like to think that someone who played and liked a casual RPG would use it as a stepping stone to richer and more complex RPG's, but for many people, you have to make that leap as easy as possible.

True in my previous roommates' experience. Titan Quest was one of the first RPGs he played which eventually led to his love for New Vegas. I can't seem to have him make the leap to old games like Arcanum or the original Fallouts, yet.

...dice rolling is not a good way to make characters for a computer game. Since nothing stops the players from re-rolling (even if it means stopping the game and restarting it), they would usually start the game with over-powered characters.

God, I hated that shit. Incentivizing the most boring mouse clicks in the world is not good design.

Good stuff - thanks for the link.

Activision. Obsidian's Chris Jones has actually already multiple times proposed a sequel to them. But without luck so far.

Sucks that they never got to use the ToEE engine for anything else, the combat in that game is really good.

The combat, yeah. The engine itself though, and the bugs. Though to be fair I'm not technically competent enough to claim it's the fault of the engine rather than the fact that they got so little time to work with it. It did take modders years to get the game to a playable state though, and even more years to eliminate most crashes and lag.

So frankly, I'd prefer a TOEE-style game on a different engine. I've heard people mention this one recently: http://chaos-chronicles.com/

Very, very interesting interview. You know the parts where he talks about why he left Interplay, how FO2 was a lot different from his own original creative vision for it, and his thoughts on Fallout 3 and New Vegas. Raised a few more questions like...

1. Will he ever make another Fallout game again if ever given the opportunity?

2. What was the original vision that he had planned for FO2'S storyline and did ANY of it even a small detail make it into the final game?

3. What are his thoughts on Fallout 4? Does he like it better than 3 and maybe New Vegas? Or does he think it's a downgrade from both of those games?

Yeah it's a shame it is from a decade ago instead of something new like I thought. :)

I was in a club and some bird asked me, did I fancy a bit of Troika. I thought this was some new buzzword for F, F and me, action.

I went back to her flat and she gave me a small fragment from a broken vase.

I think all those ' Old Heads', plus todays modders and devs should produce a slightly modified rule set and call it L.I.S.P.A.C.E, then chunk out lots of Post Apoc RPG's set in the present.

3 empires run by Leon Rusk, Gill Bates and the ' Branston Pickle Empire, Virgin' dominate the planet.
YOU, the protagonist , a retired geography teacher must recruit, train and plan missions to bring these Mega Corporations down.

All funded via Kickstarter and sekret sekts of Rebelutionaries.

Personally I am real tired of people idolizing these old ded fucks. They have literally nothing new to say. They are also out of touch and they probably fart a lot.

Sawyer also said he would like to make a Fallout. I am certain it would be a FPS or be retarded like his newest game.
