Todd Howard Q&A on Gamespot

Then of course we can just wait for another good post-apocalyptic CRPG, probably from Troika themselves, that is a spiritual successor for Fallout and that title can finally rest in peace if it's not going to be well cared for.

Didn't Interplay get all over Troika's ass for Arcanum being similar to Fallout? I don't see how even they could do a "Fallout Spirited" game without going through massive legal garbage, sadly.

Who gives a rat's ass what the last three in that list think? Tim, Leon, Jason, and Chris Taylor would be the important four to ask since they're the original four horseman. MCA is the only one of the latter three that's worked on a Fallout title, and while he's a good level designer, he never exactly made anything that fit in with the setting.

I'm interested in what JE and Dameon have to say because they worked on the former FO3. It must be painful for them, because they know what 'could have been'.

I think people are jumping the gun a little on this game. I am thrilled that there is actually going to BE a Fallout 3! I didn't think there would be a Fallout game ever again at one point.

"FALLOUT WILL NEVER BE GOOD ON THE CONSOLE!!! ARGGMM!!" Wait a second. This isn't some crappy spinoff. They want to make a true sequel to the original fallout series. The reason I didn't like F:BoS was because the idea of the game was crappy, not because it was going to be a console game. Morrowind is incredibly deep and translated fine to the Xbox. KotoR was great on the PC and console. You can't judge the game when we haven't even heard what the game will be like.

When they said the vocal minority, they mean the elitists who don't want anyone to make the game except Black Isle. Well guess what? It's fuckin dead! Troika would have been cool, but don't count out Bethesda yet. I'm willing to bet your opinions about the company will turn around when we learn more about the game.

Keep in mind that the game is in pre-development phase. They are still deciding what direction they will take.

Hey, believe me, I'm anxious about the release as well. I've been a fan since Fallout 1 and the first Duck and Cover website. It's good to be skeptical, but don't jump the gun until we learn more about the game. :D

When they said the vocal minority, they mean the elitists who don't want anyone to make the game except Black Isle.

Really? Are you sure? Have you talked to them? No? Thought so.

Take a look at this sentence:
That being said, I'm sure there's a vocal minority that wants to kill us for even attempting to do it

There is my evidence.

Wow, lets resort to name calling here. What have I done to anger you? I post this in constructive criticism. You are not adding anything to this discussion, you dismiss it altogether as being stupid. Please, tell me your thoughts on why you think I am stupid.

Basicly when you want to proof for vocal minority being "elitists who don't want anyone to make the game except Black Isle." you need evidence that says that the vocal minority are "elitists who don't want anyone to make the game except Black Isle." not evidence that says there is a vocal minority.

no need to thank me. I just love to help.

Well if you look at it that way, then there is no reason to believe he refers to forum posters as the vocal minority. My whole point in that post is there is no reason to believe he is referring fallout fans that are vocal on the NMA web boards.

Lopan, you haven't been around much have you.... If you had you would have known that Chuckie and the FBOS devs tried this exact same tactics......did it work ? naah....

Try to read around some before actually jumping on the bandwagon and label us..

You're so full of shit. Give me a quote where a member of a "vocal minority" demands that Fallout 3 be made by BIS only.

Let me guess. You made an asshole of yourself by parroting what others have said of us in the past?

Right they said the same thing with F:BoS, I remember. One thing you must remember is we already knew what the gameply was like. We already knew that it was some lame spin off action game that's only similarity to fallout was the name. The reason we were angry about that game was not the quote, but the game itself! I'm not some new Fallout fan, I love it. I use to check Duck and Cover daily. I'm part of the Fallout fanbase!

You're so full of shit. Give me a quote where a member of a "vocal minority" demands that Fallout 3 be made by BIS only.

Holy shit dude. You are so negative. I was paraphrasing the quote. He states plainly that the vocal minority are the people that would be angry for the simple reason that they are making the game. THAT is in the quote AS IS. Why are you so pissed man? I'm on you side dude sheesh.

Let me guess. You made an asshole of yourself by parroting what others have said of us in the past?

Please. Is making an ass of myself disagreeing with you? I'm simply disagreeing, no reason to be so pissed off. Look dude, if you(you as in Role-Player not the community) take that comment personally, then maybe it is because it's true. If it isn't true, then can't you see from earlier posts in this thread that people are jumping the gun on this game? It is way too early to be pissed off at Bethesda! Again, I'm not calling anyone names or anything like that. I didn't use that sentence to refer to MYSELF as an elitist and everyone else here. That is exactly what we aren't. There are people, however, who get angry for no reason, like Bethesda getting the license for Fallout 3 and it's sequels. Does that clear things up? Please respond if something I stated needs clarifying.

I'm not pissed off. I'm not quick to judge people either. Please grant me the same treatment.

Why are we discussing what they mean by "vocal minority"? It's just so extremely irrelevant in this context. There are so many other and more important things that are to be discussed on FO3 development.

As I've said earlier; we (the fans) have been screwed around more than enough already (by IPLY), and we're not very keen on that happening again with FO3. Or let's say, especially when it comes to FO3, as it's really all we've been waiting for all these years.

Of course it can turn out well with Bethesda, but considering that Bethesda has not taken part in the creation of the Fallout universe, I think we have a very good reason for being a little worried.

It's a tactical thing to say something like some rabid vocal fans will not like what we aim to do, hence the reason they say it. By looking at the various things Pete has said it really doesn't sound good.

One thing people has to understand, sigh..probably the third time I'm telling this, is that the reason for being vocal now is because IF they do aim to radically change it then THIS is the time to change their minds.. Because later along it will not matter, they cannot go back then...

Are we to harsh, meh... not really, remember that these guys are developers and should be accustomed to things like this. If they're not, then they have the wrong kind of job.

It's better to be critical then be a suckup, we're not fanbois here.. we're fans of Fallout..... remember that...

Well, that is a good point, but I think people in general could be a little less, well, mean about it. That and people need to be less naive. In another thread, someone said that they should use the original fallout engine again. Give me a fucking break (unless that was sarcasm, but i actually don't think it was).

NO ONE HAS ASKED THE MOST IMPORTANT QUESTION!!

Is Ron Pearlman going to do the intro? 8)

Observation

Observation

My caffeine and chocolate buzz is almost extinguished, so my synapsis are not as electric as earlier in this Eastern Time Zone.
Before I nod off into the sunset let me convey the observation:

Mr. Lopan came forth to preach, the message of peace and patience.
Inserted in this missive was the "straw man" labeled ""elitist"".
Sort of a trojan horse that contradicts the stated intention.

Although I commend the hard headed feisty confrontation in the replies,
I am worried about the implied lack of self awareness.

AND, if - my - awareness is peaked into a reasonable level of clarity, there have been many new antagonistic voices in the NMA Bethesda threads. Some offer the advice to 'chill out' with one hand, and bitch slap any one in reach with the other.

A chip on the shoulder is a fine thing. Sure it compliments eye color and any piercings and tattoosz. Then ...
a proud defense of stated opinions follows.
Then comes the sucker punch of opinion as fact and the cramming of false words down the throats of those forum regulars known for their unique form of hospitality.

These messages of peace harbor veiled and obvious threats.

So what is the 'truth' behind this bi-polar dichotomy in behavior?
If this is not some lunar phase that is blessing NMA with a new wave of temporal psychotics, then what attracts these 'competitive' souls.

Is the motivation for this 'attention' The "REP" of FO forums? The bad boyz "rep" of NMA?

The rhetorical 'flack' of " 'moron-idiot, moron-idiot' " stressed some out and they bit to the ad hominen bait.

Some had some hard questions to enliven our thought trains.
Yet. They came to party and got banned when they puked on the carpet.

So if NMA is, by some misguided consensus of these "good" gamers,
if NMA is judged and convicted, ... , PROFILED, as being on the

.... Dark Side ... of the -Farce- .

Then perhaps, the best and the brightest paladins of sweetness and niceness, will return, NMA will be the most convenient wind mill to tilt.

Sounds like the premise of "Dungeon Keeper".

Is it paranoia, if people are REALLY trying to get you?

I'd really rather not have a Fallout 3 if it's only going to be Fallout 3 in name only. I'm perfectly content with moving on to what's next rather than getting my hopes up for a sequel that lives up to the feeling I had when I first played Fallout. I don't think that's going to happen at this point.

They want to make a true sequel to the original fallout series.

That remains to be seen. I've seen the quotes where they say they love Fallout. That's fine. The question is, do they love all of it or do they think that a first person, real time combat CRPG with mutants and drugs is peachy keen?

KotoR was great on the PC and console. You can't judge the game when we haven't even heard what the game will be like.

KotOR had a lot of corners cut just to work with a console controller. I think that's rather obvious when you're tooling around the inventory for the game or involved in combat. The game is obviously a console port.

When they said the vocal minority, they mean the elitists who don't want anyone to make the game except Black Isle.

This is hardly true. It never was. Many fans have wanted Troika to make Fallout 3, not Black Isle. I liked Fallout more than Fallout 2, so naturally I'd rather see Troika do Fallout 3 than Black Isle.

Well guess what? It's fuckin dead!

BIS lives on in Obsidian Entertainment. The name may not be the same, but the people are.

Troika would have been cool, but don't count out Bethesda yet. I'm willing to bet your opinions about the company will turn around when we learn more about the game.

They'll have to do a much better job of PR than they're doing now. That comment about doing only what they do best didn't sit too well with a lot of people.

Hey, believe me, I'm anxious about the release as well. I've been a fan since Fallout 1 and the first Duck and Cover website. It's good to be skeptical, but don't jump the gun until we learn more about the game. :D

I'd be less nervous about the situation if it weren't for not liking the aspects of Morrowind that really pushed Fallout home for me. I know that Bethesda has done other CRPGs, but they weren't as good as Morrowind, and I really didn't like Morrowind that much.
